The Jittlov Font and its incredible ReadMe file

In 1996, Mike created his own superfont for Mac computers, unsurprisingly named “Jittlov”.  The font file (which allegedly crashes any Mac you try to install it on now) came with its own epic six-part ReadMe file, entirely composed using the font.  As the original files only worked on Mac OS 9, Frank Nora at The Overnightscape Underground screengrabbed the whole bunch and assembled it into one huge PNG file (628 x 23652 pixels). Mike even made a rare online public appearance in 2012 to thank Frank for his efforts in the comments section here.

It occurs to me that the linguistic use of AI to mean only LLMs, despite being inaccurate (or, at least, not inclusive of all things AI) might be drift in the sense of Previously, we've tended to ignore any artificial intelligence in the sense of automation or pattern recognition or robotics. That is, once we have it, it ceases to be "AI" and becomes "just how this works".

But we personify LLMs to a degree, and companies attempt to use them in place of humans to a degree, (and perhaps because some humans are so eager to transfer their agency to them), that despite LLMs being "just how they work", calling them AI seems to have stuck. This as a function of our perspective of what AI "looks like", culturally. something like that. hn. interesting.

The thing that’s always missing from the “women didn’t fight for the right to work they were already working they fought to get paid” is that many women also very much wanted to work.

Women wanted to be lawyers and engineers and chemists. They wanted to use their brains in challenging and interesting ways. They wanted to get the satisfaction from solving problems and inventing new shit and getting attention for it.

I know not everyone is born with intellectual curiosity or drive or determination but some people are and many of those people are women.

So I always wondered, but

A Game of Thrones is 1996. Storm Warning by Mercedes Lackey is circa 1994. Storm Warning is where we first see a particular Velgarth empire in any detail, including its Iron Throne (made from the blades of deposed and conquered monarchs, of course).

Now both of those books were in progress for years beforehand, and I'm not saying anything about borrowing--that's a standby, that happens and it's fine. What really interests me is: are they mutually borrowing from an other source? Did these make it to print with each wholly unaware of the overlap? (I've heard that Toyotomi Hideyoshi inspired it for Martin but I don't have an attestation for that.)
