Some thoughts I'm writing here instead of my main blog because I have less followers here and I want to say it in a public way while keeping it as private as possible.

Disclaimer: This isn't to say other people's takes are wrong, either factually or morally. It's just my own taste and why I feel that way.

I don't have a problem in fics/ships/meta when Jason is portrayed as violent or antagonistic. He absolutely is. The problem for me is when everyone else is portrayed as timid and meek victims of his violence. It's not what happened in canon and it feels right in line with the take on Jason I hate of him being a selfish bulldozer with zero care for the people around him. All of RH Jason's relationships in pre-52 were mutually antagonistic. Obviously it started with Jason's rebellion, but the response to him was not gentle kindness and supportive love.

Jason was not some high school bully to the poor, kind-hearted nerds. He was not shoving the other bats in lockers. There are plenty of characters I like and enjoy filling that specific role, but Jason has never been that to me, and so much of a particular corner of this fandom feels like pushing him into it.

Of course, there's a balance to this, because the other side is making Jason the weeping wallflower, innocent and shy and naive. All of the fun and spice of his character is removed. I unabashedly love gratuitous angst, but let Jason be a little mean! Let him challenge other characters. Part of why I like Jason so much compared to other bats is because he actually got to truly oppose Bruce.
