Redesigning my Anxiety :3
Scrapped Emotion Concepts 2/2 Hope
Hope was going to represent my more optimistic, faithful and determined side and their design was based off of that of a blooming flower/seedling. I wanted to make an emotion that was the opposite to Anxiety in the sense that Hope eagerly anticipates for the best possible outcome while as Anxiety restlessly anticipates the worst possible outcomes. I eventually scrapped them and applied aspects of their personality to both Joy and Anxiety, with Joy being optimistic and trusting of every possible outcome, while Anxiety eagerly anticipates specific outcomes and hopes that they go smoothly, while also considering and preparing for the worst possible outcomes
Mirth/Freude/Amusement
Mirth/Freude/Amusement was going to represent my sense of humor and comedy. They don't take things very seriously and tends to find amusement in many things, even things that would be considered shameful. Tho this is never out of cruelty or sadism, but out of a wanting to make light of a situation and to bring joy and fun. I eventually scrapped them and applied the amusement aspect of their character into Joy. Their design was obviously based on Schadenfreude concept from the original film lol
Wonder/Amazement/Awe/Surprise
This was an emotion that was hell to work on tbh. I wanted to make an emotion that was supposed to represent that sense of bewilderment, shock, amazement and surprise. As a for their personality, gave them a very surfer mentality, very easily shocked and very curious to put it simply. I wanted to make an emotion that was going to encompass all of that but I could never settle on a proper name for them. I scrapped them inevitably for the sake of my sanity, but also felt like it was just TOO brief of an experience to give it a personality. Also thought aspects of it's purpose and personality could meld with other emotions, like Joy, Amore, Envy, Anxiety and Fear. If I ever properly come up with a solid name and personality, I might include them Contempt
Contempt was a fun experiment. They are a completely original emotion that was supposed to represent that feeling of superiority, judgement and that sense of scorn. Their design is inspired by that of Law and Court motifs. Their head shaped was based off of court scales with the hair acting as the weights, and their wardrobe was that of the judge fit. While a fun character to design and conceptualize, I never actually made them a part of the group since I felt aspects of their personality could encompass emotions like Disgust, Anger or Ennui
All and all, those were all of my scrapped concepts. Thx for reading! I will soon make sum doodles of comics and scenarios of my emotions to show their personalities and interactions shine Stay tuned! :333
Here's a dump of my scrapped emotion concepts, I will explain their personalities and the thought process behind their designs 1/2 Jealousy
Jealousy was admittedly a very fun emotion to work with. Jealousy was scrapped in the film since they felt they would be confused with Envy and that being around a bitter and hostile character would be unpleasant to have around. So to remedy this, I researched what Jealousy is, and it is described as "a feeling of fear or anger towards someone/something taking away something/someone that one loves or deeply values. With this in mind I thought "what if I made them a feral animal?" and so I came up with the brilliant idea of my version of Jealousy They are indeed a very feral and unhinged with very limited speech. They are pretty much a guard dog, lashing out whenever they feel what they value is under threat of being taken away, and as a result, is put on a chained leash to control them. When they are not feeling threatened, they act as ur average dog, with a tinge of grumpiness I eventually scrapped them since I though their personality and purpose melded too much with Anger Their design and personality is inspired by many animalistic characters, like Animal, Taz, Kyle, Thumper and Ren Hoek
Greed
Greed was going to be somewhat similar to Jealousy in behavior, but decided to give them peasant/feral homeless/crackhead vibes. They have a very arched poster and very restless and grabby. They are always craving more and is very possessive of what they attain out of an intense need for self satisfaction, security and fulfilment I eventually scrapped them since I feel aspects of their character could blend with Fear, Anxiety and Envy. Speaking of Envy, I initially wanted to make Envy an all encompassing feeling of wanting, yearning and craving more and went with the name Covetousness for the longest time, but I eventually stuck with Envy since it's easier to say, and also accepted that Envy would encompass those feelings overall Suspicion
Suspicion was another fun character to work on. They were of that sentiment, suspicious, paranoid and deeply mistrustful of everyone and everything. They always keep notes of every situation and always gives a side eye out of distrust. This is all an attempt to be prepared and keep tracks as to not make the same mistakes or for self preservation. Because of this, it's obvious why I scrapped them, since those aspects of their character would meld with emotions like Fear and Anxiety Their design is inspired by their concept art if that wasn't obvious enough lol
Adoration/Admiration
Adoration/Admiration was basically beta Amore, without the lovey dovey kind of behavior. Originally there was gonna be Admiration/Adoration and a more romantic and sensual emotion called Eros, but I eventually meshed them together into the character of Amore. Not much else to be said here tbh lol
Lastly, I wanna talk about the loud and proud party animal, Pride
Pride is an emotion I'm still kind a debating if I should keep or not, but here's a general description of their character Pride is a very extroverted, loud, proud, flamboyant and celebratory emotion. They are very extra with their voice and their movement, always evoking a sense of grace and beauty with every action they make. They are extremely self confident and never question nor doubt themselves, and often strives for themselves and others to be their best possible selves and has a bit of a competitive side. They are pretty much the cheerleader of the group, always hyping everyone up, deeming each and every single one of them "praise worthy" such as they deem themselves, representing my loud and energetic side, my ego and mild sense of confidence. Tho very sure of themself, they're ego is pretty fragile, since if their pride is bruised become a dramatic wreck lol
Their design is very original, not inspired by any concept art in any sense. Wanted them to have similar motifs to Joy since I feel they bare some similarities. Only difference is that instead of being comforting and blooming like Joy, Pride has a very specific feeling. That sense of exuberance, triumph, energy and that sense of being up lifted. Like ur on top of everything, like ur body is celebrating. I designed their character out of that sense of celebration and gave them a very colorful dress, lots of make up, and a flower crown. Wanted them to feel as if they are celebration itself. Their design is also heavily inspired by Yellow Pearl :3
Let's talk about our lovey dovey lil romantic, Amore
Amore was an interesting emotion to work on. While I don't think Love is a traditional emotion since it's so complex of a topic that it transcends the very concept of emotion at times and making a character representing all of Love would be hell to write, I feel a Love like emotion would be a very neat addition, but representing a very specific kind of love, that sense of liking towards something/someone, the lovey dovey, affectionate and butterflies in ur stomach kind of feeling. Amore is an Italian term that means a specific kind of love, that of affection, passion and appreciation. It can be towards a person, a thing, an animal (like ur pet) but it can also have a romantic aspect to it if used towards a lover. Amore is very affectionate, tender and a romantic. They adore everyone and everything and is never shy to express their adoration, worship and appreciation towards the things and people they love, representing my extremely an inhumanly loving and affectionate aspect of myself. They have aspects of sensuality in their behavior but is very subtle about it and never truly acts on it. They always compliment and glaze the others, wanting them to feel appreciated and love. They love everyone equally, but give Envy the most attention since they know how dissatisfied with themselves they are and wants them to feel appreciated, and has a pretty close bond with emotions like Shame, Joy, Sadness and Nostalgia. They like to tease Embarrassment since they find their shyness and bashfulness adorable Amore is very much inspired by the concept art of Love, very bean like in shape and has a lot of warm colors. Tho I was struggling of what colors I should go for them. I didn't want to go for pink since that would be too similar to Embarrassment, and the magenta and orange felt a little to clashing imo. But I eventually settled on various oranges, salmons and peaches. Felt it really encapsulates that warm, tender feeling that they are meant to represent. Their look is very much inspired by renaissance paintings, specifically that of the Greek variety. All of their works usually consists of that of warm and soft colors and possessed minimal clothing that usually consists of a cloth that I felt was perfect for the kind of design I was shooting for ///WARNING/// NUDITY
It's time to talk about our sweaty lil pleader, Guilt
Guilt was an emotion that I had the most difficulty designing. I was struggling with not making this character too similar to Anxiety since I felt some aspects of their character could meld into Anxiety. But I now believe I came up with a solid personality to differentiate them from Anxiety. Guilt is a very sweaty, fidgety and well, guilty lil dumpling that always think they are doing or have done something wrong. As a result, they are overly apologetic and always, desperately tries to fix things to make amends, and has a tendency to fold under pressure and blurt out a confession here and there. Guilt and Anxiety are kind a related, since they are both restless and sweaty emotions that always have an urge to fix something. Only difference is that Anxiety is a lot more hyperactive and focuses towards the future and the present and more amoral problems, while as Guilt is a lot more pitter patter with their movements and focuses on the present and the past and more moral problems They are by far the most moral emotion out of them all, since whenever something they deem morally unacceptable has been committed, they won't stand for it and often tries to set things right. They shrink and squish their head and hair down when they felt they've committed a moral transgression and despite their size, is the heaviest emotion. One could say they are weighed down by their own sense of guilt
Their design is of course inspired by the concept art. I love how they look like they are squashed, weighed down by their own sense of guilt, very dumpling shaped imo. The purple I feel fits since when one feels guilt, it feels like they have a wound in ur gut, a painful punch in ur soul that u can't shake off. Their hair I was struggling with since I didn't know if I wanted hair to go down to their eyes or above them. But I went with the latter sense it just looked better
Now that I got the main emotions out of the way, I can finally talk about the revamped emotions that were scrapped. I am incredibly eager to talk about one in particular since I have a very interesting interpretation of them Let's at long last talk about the swamp creature themself, Shame
My Shame is completely different from the concept version of the character. The Shame in the concept version is very antagonistic, hostile and not very loving compared to the other emotions. No wonder she was scrapped. I never liked this read of the emotion since 1, the character never really felt ashamed and 2, I felt this more so reveals how psychologists and the public look at Shame, that and the current description of the feeling as a purely negative, self deprecating and maladaptive emotion that makes one feel worthless and subhuman, to the point that some hesitate to call it an emotion due to how seemingly purely destructive it is, and those who try to apply positives to it make it sound to similar too Embarrassment and Guilt, creating even more confusion and debate. But Shame is a very different emotion from them and I feel looking at it through a different and compassionate lens is essential to see the value in the emotion So the original definition of Shame means "to hide" and what does Shame often hide away? Aspects of ourselves, our actions or behaviors that would be considered scorn worthy by the social group/society or was scorned in the past, which is very different from emotions like Embarrassment and Guilt, where the former acts more like an appeasement gesture for a silly mistake or foolish behavior and the latter makes one want to make up for and fix present/past mistakes or moral transgressions. It protects u from being ostracized Shame would be a reclusive, secretive, semi anti social and soft spoken emotion. They often tug their long hair out of insecurity or fear and tends to hide behind their hair when they felt like they did something scorn worthy and has a tendency to shut down and hide away. They're very inhibitory and often holds the other emotions back and reminds them of the social consequences of their actions, and also of what happened the last time they did the thing. They keep a veil of "parts of us that the world mustn't see" and or "parts of us that was seen with unloving eye's". To put it simply, they a keeper and a protector of one's most vulnerable aspects of oneself, and keeps them low from any potential scorn or ridicule I love the idea that instead of Shame being an antagonistic and harsh critic of their person as most people tend to associate with Shame, they are an emotion that arguably loves their person THE MOST out of all of the emotions since they keeps the deeper and more vulnerable aspects of their person with them and to themself only, protecting them with all of their might and only revealing them when they think they are accepted or acceptable
Their design is inspired by very specific concept art of Shame. I always preferred the swampy look of the character since Shame is often referred to by psychologists as "the swamplands of the soul". I love how they would have absurdly long hair, perfect for hiding away out of, well, shame lol
The last of the main emotions, our sentimental lil romanticizer, Nostalgia
Imma be real, WHAT IS THERE TO CHANGE ABOUT NOSTALGIA LMAOOOO Not much is known about them other than they are ur average "back in my days" ah individual and looks back a certain events or things with rose tinted glasses, longing to go back to simpler times or to be reminded of their values. They are still very much the same character with the added bonus of acting as a sort of archiver or librarian of cherished memories or memories they are fond of to reminisce on. They often like to cook for the other emotions Their design is inspired by the concept art. Luv the hunchback and big ol' glasses :3 Gave them different hair from the concept art since why not lol
Now let's talk about the limp drama queen themself, Ennui
My version of Ennui is a lil bit different from the Ennui in film. They are still very much deadpan, listless, lethargic and very very lazy. But I put heavy emphasis on the royalty/privileged aspect of their personality All of their basic need is met daily and have grown too comfortable with what they have, leaving everything outside of that failing to satisfy them. They are indifferent and at times a little contemptuous, not wanting to deal with or associate with most people/things out of apathy for those kinds of things and that smug sense of "I'm too good for this" or "This is not worth my time", representing my artsy fartsy side and my overall laid back indifference to most things in the world that aren't my business or don't affect me Tho they seem like they don't care about anything or anyone, they really do care a LOT, specifically of where they should focus their energy on and what to associate with. They regulate the other emotions often and is extremely level headed and down to earth as a result of their laid back nature, often being the one to point out the obvious solution majority of the time. Because of this, they are prolly the MOST intelligent emotion next to Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anxiety Their design is heavily based on the concept art of Ennui when they had a lot of royalty motifs. I wanted to give Ennui a nose but I could never find a position that I was satisfied with so I just got rid of it, and I also realized that I'm literally redesigning them and I can make them look however I want lmaooo. Wanted to make them pink with my version as well but thought they might look too similar to Embarrassment in colors so I went back to a more violet indigo
I also took inspiration from Picasso paintings for their face since they are considered a high art that only the rich and privileged can afford. Really wanted them to feel high class in their appearance and I genuinely love the abstract look for their face and overall look. They almost like like a rich painting come to life lol
Let's talk about the big ol' blushy boi, Embarrassment
Embarrassment is still Embarrassment, not much changed with them. Still very shy, nervous, awkward and very easily flustered and mortified, just made them clumsy for flare. They always find someway to embarrass themselves, whether that be having toilet paper habitually stuck on their foot (even tho they don't shit they are emotions lol), fumble a situation, trip over or often become the center of attention. They never seem to catch a break and always whimper and squeal out of fluster and often wants to hide in their security blanket when overwhelmed, representing my shyness and awkwardness around others They are a very sweet and gentle emotion, and very observant and careful around the others due to their strength and size. They don't talk much out of shyness, and even when they do it's barely audible. Very rarely do they ever properly speak up. They try to keep a low profile and try not to draw attention to themselves, with little to no success
Their design is mostly inspired by their concept art, with sum tweaks here and there. I really like the concept that they always have a sheet of toilet paper stuck to them for no reason lmaoo. I put heavy emphasis on blankets since that's what I often use to hide away in and associate them with safety and security. I made them not wear anything under their blanket, one cause they don't have any clothes that fit them, and because nudity is the common cause for embarrassment :3c I like to describe Embarrassment as a "shy elephant". In the sense that they are the largest emotion but also the most timid
It's time to talk about the longing lil pea, Envy
My version of Envy is a lil different from the Envy in film. My envy is a lot more, longing, wishful and desperate. They constantly crave more and painfully wish to attain what others have. As a result, they tend to pine and wine over what they feel they lack in, tho they have a tendency to silently observe from a distance since they feel they are unworthy of such amenities They wish they were like the others and try their best to mimic them to improve themselves. However it's usually to no avail, but they keep on trying, representing my unbridled desire and determination to attain what I wish and hope to have in my life They have a bit of an inferiority complex and tend to undermine themselves a lot and put the others on a pedestal, even when the other emotions constantly tell them that they are equal and give them plenty of opportunities to join them in their activities. Envy ultimately is one that wishes for improvement Their design is also not too dissimilar to the concept art, but for their wardrobe I thought they would wear rags and low budget clothing. I was also struggling with the hair similar to Disgust, but I once again found a design I was happy with. Wanted to really emphasize that sense of longing, yearning, wishing for and reaching out, like a pet when your holding a treat. Their behavior is also a subtle homage to Mort lmao
Now let's talk about the tense and shaky lil frazzle of energy, Anxiety
Anxiety is Anxiety, not much change in their character. Very overzealous, hyperactive, impulsive, overly anticipatory and very unstable. They eagerly consider and prepare for every possible outcome. They wish for the best possible outcome while also considering the ways things could go wrong. They contradict themselves often and is constantly jumping from one problem to another in an attempt to fix it in hopes of things will go smoothly. They are restless and always feel like they need to do something or be productive. They represent my constant worries for others and my desire to be more productive Anxiety is very much different from Fear in many aspects. While Fear only freaks out when there's a visible or potential threat and calms down once it's gone, Anxiety always thinks there's a threat even if the visible threat is gone. They always feel as if something is wrong and constantly tries to figure it out and subdue it. As a result, they rarely get sleep and is often the hawk of the group Despite their constant worries, Anxiety ultimately is doing all of this to ensure a good, stable future for themselves and everyone else Anxiety didn't go through much change design wise as well. The design philosophy is still the same, just made a few tweaks here and there. Their look is very much inspired by 1, 3 and 5. Made the mouth smaller, the eyes bigger, and the sweater slightly over sized. Wanted them to feel very loose, wild, very small dog like in behavior and looks, specifically a chihuahua lol. I love the idea that although they bare similarities to Fear with their big worried expressions there are some keen differences. With Fear, they are mostly dull in their colors until provoked and flashes a bright pale, representing the fleeting and spontaneous nature of the emotion. Anxiety however, has no dull or cooler parts in their design. It's all a bright, oppressive and intense orange with no signs of rest or complacency, representing the longevity and intensity of the feeling compared to Fear
Lettuce talk about our snotty lil critic, Disgust
My version of Disgust is not too different from Disgust in the films, very critical, picky, snooty and brutally honest with their opinions. However, I delve HEAVY on the critic vibes with them They are basically your average critic and have incredibly high standards that they refuse to lower. They consider their job a profession that they have mastered and have a liking to rare insults, representing my picky, critical and disrespectful side. They are a bit of an art snob and enjoy the finest art forms, and are the same way with food. They can also be picky with people, groups, places, clothing etc. Similar to Anger, they also tend to tolerate the other Emotions out of respect and care, tho they never want to admit to it out of their own arrogance Design wise the inspiration is based on very specific concept designs of Disgust. I always liked the sweater for the character, elicits very much critic vibes since it's often their wardrobe. I really like the idea that they have a big, pointy, sensitive nose that is always pointing up out of revolt and disdain so I went with that for the design. Their hair was difficult to settle on at first, never knew if I wanted to be very short or very long, but I eventually struck a balance that I was satisfied with
Outside of the concept art, their design is like I said before, heavily inspired by critics. Wanted to go for a very fancy, very professional look with them. Idk of any actual irl critics so I just went with the ones I know of for the inspiration, specifically Edna Mode and Anton Ego. They truly elicit high standards, professional criticism and that overall sharp and oppressive sense of judgement
Now let's talk about the hot headed fuzz ball, Anger
My version of Anger is quite different from the film version, but the core aspects of the emotion hasn't changed. They are still grumpy, irritable, crass and very defensive They are kind of the grumpy old man of the emotions, rambling on about the injustices and ignorance of people and the world, expressing visible frustration from the cycles that people elicit on each other, representing my passionate ideals and frustrations with humanity. They are very much care for fairness and the protection of ones loved ones, and tends to go hay wire when felt like that fairness, of how things ought to have or deserve is or if their loved ones is threatened They can be aggressive and violent when enraged, but they are never that to a fault. Most of the time they sit away from others and grumbles here and there, but tolerates the company of others if they get close. They never admit it but they do deeply love and care for the others
Their design is inspired by both the concept art of Irritation and of the more experimental arts of Anger. I love how spikey and explosive they look, almost like touching them or being anywhere near them is a hazard. They really do elicit the experience of Anger in a more raw way than the movie did imo
Outside of the concept art, I took inspiration from how the experience of Anger feels to me. It always felt sharp, like a rising sparking flame, like a porcupine on fire. With this in mind, I took inspo from many fuzzy and spiky looking things, like porcupines, cats when they are threatened and urchins . Colors wise I went for volcanic, molten, red hot looks for them. Wanted them to elicit that feeling of heat, that gets redder and brighter when they get angrier and angrier. They bare a similar color philosophy from Fear since the two feelings are connected in a way and bare similar purposes of protection
Let us talk about the jumpy lil stickman, Fear
Not much changed about my version of Fear from the film version. They are a very jumpy and cowardly emotion, freaking out at even the slightest iota of a visible, tangible or potential threat. Despite that, if the threat is gone or nowhere to be seen, they calm down immediately and is usually pretty level headed and chill, if not mildly defeatist. They are very safety conscious and always making sure that nothing could go wrong to hurt them or anyone else, as a result can come off as a bit paranoid at times. But ultimately, all of this is coming from a place of care and self preservation. They are a protector, one of many
Their design is undeniably inspired by the old concept art of Fear. I always preferred this design over the film version and love how bug like and stick like they are, very fitting since bugs tend to jump or fly away out of fear and self preservation and applied that to their personality and design
Outside of the concept art, they are very much inspired by bugs, specifically stick bugs, dragonflies and worms, mostly with their postering and how they would move. They would freeze up like a stick bug, jump up and speed a way like a dragonfly, and cower away like a worm. I also made them a very dark emotion with some pale in the center, and would flash brightly when they are frightened or spooked. I went with pale instead of purple since I felt pale represented Fear better since it ties in well with the expression "pale with fear". I made their general color black since it represents our innate fear of the dark, and gave them bug motifs since in general, most bugs freak me out lol
It's time to talk about the big ol' blue lug, Sadness
My version of Sadness it not too different from the movie version, very gloomy, melancholic, sluggish, very much of a crybaby and very caring and empathetic, but there are sum subtle differences in their behavior My Sadness is pretty lonesome and always wants a cuddle buddy, representing my innate sadness and loneliness as an individual despite my optimism, but also represents my sensitive and compassionate side as well. They are often very tired and slow in both movement and in thought, but despite that, they are very intelligent and quite philosophical. They are also very much into the arts and is often moved by the emotion behind them, whether that be artwork, film, music, themes etc. Unlike the film version where Joy and Sadness had to get to know each other before they could attain a deep connection, my Joy and Sadness have been buddies as long as they can remember. I was never afraid to cry and express myself back when I was young and that continues on today. Joy always loves to accompany Sadness and keep them company. Because of this, Joy is often Sadness's go to cuddle buddy and seems to really appreciate Joy's chipperness and friendliness. The 2 are inseparable :3
Sadness's design is heavily inspired by the concept art. I really like the idea of Sadness being this big ol', slouchy and droopy teddy bear esc figure. Their head is often tilted, have a very slouched posture and has very baggy eyes, always looking like they just came out of bed
Outside of that, I also took inspiration from that of wet/abandoned teddy bears, specifically with their posturing. Teddy bears whenever they sit down alone or wet, they always have this slump look to them. Always looking down and for me personally, looks kind a sad. They always made me feel pretty gloomy whenever I look at them and feel a need to hug them. I applied that feeling to my version of Sadness into their design. Wanted them to feel both heavy, and cuddlable
Lemmie give u peeps a lil a heads up: All of my emotions don't have specific genders since in my mind, they are ambiguous and abstract in concept and transcend the concept of concrete genders imo, so they all go by they/them. Tho none of them ever go by he or her, they still have preferences in clothing and it doesn't matter the gender associated with them. Just to let u know :3 Okie, now it is time to tell u all my thought process for my versions of the emotions, starting off with Joy
My version of Joy is quite different from the Joy in the films. They are still very much a jolly individual but express it in a very different way The Joy in the films is often eccentric, peppy and in ur face with her positivity and optimism, but my version of Joy is a lot more casual, laid back and overall just content with life, representing my laid back, fun loving and optimistic feelings towards life. They have their instances of energy and excitement that usually consists of them frolicking about in utter glee and euphoria, but most of the time, they lay around in utter bliss and serenity and are easily amused by the simplest of things.
Despite seeming like the perfect being, they still have their faults. For one, they are pretty naive and reckless. They have so much unwavering confidence and faith that things will go well that they often don't consider the potential negatives of a situation, even if it's warranted. They are also very sensitive to any instance of pleasure and tends to get lost in the moment, not thinking about the future consequences Despite that, they are still a very sweet Emotion and often wants to hug the others out of deep appreciation and, well, JOY :3 Their design is very much inspired by the concept art of Joy. I always loved the sky blues contrasting with the warm, innate yellows, with a tinge of pink on the face. It really gives off that sense of radiance, expression, happiness and really shows the connection between her and Sadness more imo
But the concept art wasn't the only inspiration for the design, I also designed the emotion based on how it feels for me personally. Whenever I experience Joy it felt very comforting and soft, very fuzzy and warm, sorta like my insides is blooming like a flower, expanding outward to the world to hug it all. With this in mind, I gave them flower motifs, with their general shape and their wardrobe. Wanted to give off that sense of comfort and expanse, want them to feel like they are in a state of bliss and contentment
