I’m literally shaking as I write this
President Sebastián Piñera just declared Chile at “state of emergency” over the riots that are taking place in Santiago.
This means that the police, military and special forces are no longer subject to our constitution’s laws; they can legally violate our human rights without getting any punishment.
Guys, I’m scared. They’re torturing people and a student is already missing. They’re throwing tear gas grenades directly at people, shooting teens and college students, hitting and hurting anyone who happens to be on the streets. They apparently killed two college students already.
Please, please don’t let this get swept under the rug.

Hey tumblr! This is happening NOW, share if you can!
WTF Media, I have to hear about this from tumblr?
@justalurkr, my son explained something I’d never considered: there are stages or levels at which war is fought. There used to be three: ground, sea, and space. A fourth has been added: communication.
We have global communication right now. Australians can find out what’s happening in Italy within moments of an event.
But military can block communication to isolate a conflict and keep it contained so it’ll fizzle out. Information can get IN, but can be blocked getting OUT, so the only people that really know what’s happening are those directly involved in the conflict. Those people eventually get tired of fighting and with no help or knowledge that others see their plight, they give up more easily. This process takes about two weeks to contain, from the first news item to blocking.
Something like the above post is a good example. Why doesn’t the world know about what’s happening in Chile? Because the Powers That Be don’t want you to know. Bits of information may leak out, but not in mainstream media. It’s mostly those civilians in the middle of things that manage to get a tiny bit of information out there, but there’s no guarantee that anyone will see/hear it.
Another example? What about what’s happening in Venezuela? There was a bit of information about a violent uprising or dictatorship, but currently? No idea. Or how about Hong Kong? Heard much about that conflict lately? What about Brazil? Nope, not much there any more either.
(Sanitized information does get out, enough for us to know something is going on. But the gritty reality is kept from us on purpose.)
I’m sure part of the problem is that with so much information available it’s easy for something to get lost in the shuffle as time goes on.
Every time I come to England I call her.
