18 and 19 for the writers ask game please!

Thank you for this ask @sophie-hatter-jenkins 18) scent associated with the character - so this one is really interesting for me to reflect on. I have sythenthesia. So I have a lot of overlap between color, numbers, scents, and feelings. The Ginny scent is the scent of my husband the first night we hung out at freshman orientation. He is Indian so everything in his dorm smelled like curry. I had never really been around curry before this, so it was my first time smelling this really distinct smell. I wrapped this comforter around my shoulders because I was cold. And i remember it smelling like the number 3, the color yellow, and the most intense feeling of contentment and home.

I feel like Harry has the same sensation when he smelled the love potion. She smells like the number three, the color yellow, and the most intense feeling of contentment and home. I don't know what smell that translates into for him. But I always interpret it as the broom polish (which reminds me of turpentine varnish mixed with oil paints and paintbrush wood from when I would oil paint), wildflowers (but it would be a stronger earthy warm dirt scent vs a lighter airy scent. It would smell hearty and alive like good grass and good dirt), and the molasses of the treacle tart. So all of that would translate for me to being the smell of this color: a combination of clay, sand, and iron.

19) a fear associated with the character: Ginny her fear is confinement and not knowing her own mind. Also controlled, manipulated, and constrained. My reason for this is quite dark so I will add a spoiler tag. #SIGNIFICANT TRAUMA WARNING#

I was forcibily hospitalized into a mental health facility in the early 2000s due to a severe reaction to an SSRI. I had a lot of unprocessed trauma from abuse and OCD. My therapist told my family doctor to prescribe a very high dose of paxil (now we know it causes psychosis in teens but we didn't know that back then).

After a month on the medication, I developed severe depression and psychosis. One night in a state of psychosis, I was forcibly hospitalized in a mental hospital. I was physically restrained for several days and injected with numerous medications. The next year and a half I was forced to take drug after drug, pill after pill, with the threat looming if I did not "act better" I would go back to the hospital. I was sexually assaulted by my best friend's oldest brother and he convinced me I hallucinated it because I was crazy before he came clean. I was sent back to the hospital after that and I became incredibly good at masking my feelings and emotions.

I think Ginny has that same mask after the chamber. I think she still has night terrors, fear of letting people in, the ability to have thousands of "friends" but only lets a select few people she feels safe with to really know her true inner core. Once multiple people are able to manipulate you, change your memories, gaslight you, threaten and successfully restrict your freedom, it changes who you are at a core. You can come back from these things, but the person you come back into being has this visceral depth of trauma that cannot be turned off.

That's how I interpret the Chamber and Tom for her.

7: A coping mechanism for both Harry & Ginny is using physical activity as a distraction. I tend to be anxious avoidant and have this strong physiologial urge to move when I am stressed and anxious. The urge to physically run away is really strong.

6: a mode of transportation with a lot of potential This one is easy for me! A mountain bike. I feel like mountain biking and flying are very similar sets of skills. I like to have the characters engage with muggle forms of transportation and have it feel like something they are used to. Riding my bike is also how I am able to write flying scenes. It really helps me think about what is happening in my body while I ride to hopefully give characters depth.

2: a mannerism that accidentally slipped in, and now you are stuck to Harry smirking. I love a cocky Harry, especially with Ginny.
