Man I love this game. Fresh and innovative take on the creature-collecting formula of the Pokémon franchise.
Isekai adventure: you wash up on an interdimensional island populated by monsters and a small community of other humans who have also been isekai'd before you.
The humans defend themselves against the monsters using magical walkmans, which allow them to record monsters onto cassette tapes and shapeshift themselves into the form of any monster they've recorded
Vast majority of the game's battles are 2v2. You are accompanied everywhere on your travels by a partner. There are 7 different partners available to choose between (and you can switch them at any time). The more time you spend with a partner, the stronger your relationship grows, up to and including developing a romantic relationship.
Alternatively, there's cross-platform multiplayer, with up to 8 players at once and with everything you'd expect: battling together, trading, battling against each other, and doing raid bosses.
You and your partner can fuse your beasts together during battle, creating a unique and powerful hybrid of the two beasts:
There are 143 beasts in total, and every single one can be fused with every other (including itself), so there are 20449 unique fusion forms to record to your bestiary!
Rogue fusions can be encountered in the overworld as mini-bosses
There are 14 elemental types, and the elemental matchup system incorporates secondary effects that bestow buffs and debuffs in addition to the standard strengths & weaknesses. It's very cool.
Instead of Shiny Pokémon, Cassette Beasts has Bootleg Tapes. These beasts aren't just pallet swapped, they have a different elemental type to their base form, and a correspondingly broader moveset.
(so if you REALLY wanna be anal about 'recording 'em all', there are technically 2,002 different beasts and 4,008,004 unique fusions... 😅)
There are 20ish Archangels to battle and defeat. Very difficult boss fights. These guys can't be recorded to cassettes, and they're broadly immune to all of the status effects that would otherwise allow you to cheese your way through the fight.
you can freely change the moveset of your cassettes at any time out of battle. The moves are stickers which you apply to the cassette, so when you peel them off a cassette they just go into your bag to be reused again on any cassette in your collection they're compatible with.
You can freely change your character's appearance at any time by returning home and changing into a different outfit
When you're in the process of recording a monster they'll always retain 1hp & can't be knocked out
Overworld traversal abilities are part of your character and not the cassettes they're carrying. No need to waste a party slot for a HM slave when you can just do a partial transformation to sprout your own wings when needed.
So yeah, this game is really good. I really love it and highly recommend it. If, like me, you're sick to death of The Pokémon Company's stale, tired, zero-effort, zero-quality slop, give Cassette Beasts a try.
