Kurt Schumacher about the future politics of Germany (Hamburg, 1946)
-Short Information- Kurt Ernst Carl Schumacher born in 1895 Culm, Westprussia, was a German politician. He voluntarily enlisted to fight in the Reichswehr shortly after WW1 began. On the 2nd December 1914, he got heavily wounded near the city Łowicz and his right arm had to be amputated. After he studied law and national economics he joined the SPD. In the Weimar Republic he was a strong opponent of the Nazis and the Communists. He once said that the NSDAP achived “the complete mobilization of human stupidity for the first time in the history of German politics”. He also blamed the Communists for fighting against the SPD because of the Bolshevization and comparing the social democracy with fascism. After the National Socialists came to power he got imprisoned in several concentartion camps. When the third Reich capitulated, he immediately tried to build up the SPD again. With success. He got unanimously elected as the first chairman of the SPD and got the first opposition leader of the Federal Republic of Germany. On the 20th August 1952 the gravely ill Kurt Schumacher died in Bonn, Germany. Kurt Schumacher is one of the most important German politicians in history. He was the most essential person which build up the post-war SPD and shaped the german social democracy. He was truly one of the founding fathers of the modern day Germany.
