oh, hey, itās adrinette ā day 215
I'm a multishipper which means I ship my favorite character x anyone who makes them happy
Sometimes the ship aint your taste but the freaks who create the art for it are so goddamn skilled that you end up liking it by proxy... and thats truly what fandom is about
Sometimes a fic will be so sweet that it'll convince me to like a ship that I never would've even considered otherwise.
Anyway, shoutout to The Time of my Life by LeoLeonte for writing a fic that convinced me to ship Marinette Dupain Cheng with Superboy of all people. If you're a fan of Conner Kent (or of Marinette, for that matter) and you like sweet and light-hearted fanfics, then you'll love this story.
post everything
Nicholas Cox wishes you all a merry Christmas... š Thanks @johannathemad š
I think as a fandom we do not give Nicholas Cox enough financial literacy. He is poor, yes. He is unused to luxury, yes. But when youāre so focused on the cost of things and having to budget, you develop: financial literacy. Nicholas knows taxes. Nicholas has worked jobs. Nicholas has formulas for budgeting. Nicholas pays rent on time. Nicholas knows how much milk costs at any moment. Nicholas knows the difference between good bread and bad bread. Nicholas knows how to fix pipes with a wrench, some scrap metal, some screws, and a rusty screwdriver he found on the side of the road. It was the only way he could help keep his mother afloat. He would be financially literate.
Nicholas was directly responsible for paying for paying at least some of the bills back when he lived with his mom. Like, this is canon, guys, I can pull up the comic panels.
(I guess maybe some people were thrown by Nicholas's comment about how Seiji buying all those watches must've cost "hundreds of dollars", as opposed to tens of thousands, but I just assumed that was because Nicholas was used to $30 watches. Also, that scene was in Fence: Striking Distance, which technically isn't part of the comic book canon anyway.)
Fence characters: Books vs Comics
I noticed that the books diverge from the comics quite a bit, not just in terms of plot but also in terms of characterization. I thought it might be fun to highlight some of the differences, so Iāve made a chart comparing the comic book versions of some of Fence characters with their book counterparts.
If anybody needs alt text for this please let me know; I only used screenshots because I couldn't figure out how to format tables in tumblr.
I'm so confused about seiji and Nicholas' ages. They're freshman so they should be 13-14 but apparently they're 15-16??? How does that work?? What am I missing??
You know, this bugged me at first, but I think I figured it out. There are 2 possibilities.
Possibility 1: King's Row is a 3 year high school. Those aren't common in the US, but they do exist. If it's a 3 year high school, then they only have freshman (who are 15/16), juniors (16/17), and seniors (17/18). None of the major characters at King's Row are sophomores, so as far as I know this is completely plausible, but if someone manages to find a mention of a sophomore at King's Row, then this theory goes at the window. Exton, however, does have sophomores, as do most of the other schools, so if the 3 year school theory is true, then Seiji would've been a sophomore had he attended Halverton or Exton.
Possibility 2: King's Row is a typical American 4 year high school, but Nicholas and Seiji aren't typical freshman. Nicholas probably got held back a year at some point due to his terrible grades, so he's a year older than he should be. Seiji spent an entire year in France, where he learned French and learned a lot of new fencing moves, but probably didn't have the necessary French fluency to learn all of the history, literature, and science he was supposed to learn as a freshman. His parents didn't want him to struggle in school as a sophomore, so they just had him repeat his freshman year in America.
Ultimately, the only way to know more for sure is to wait until we either learn the age of another King's Row freshman, or meet a King's Row sophomore.
Inspiration for Day 2: music (27th June 2026)
Intertextuality reigns supreme as we think about the songs and albums we associate with Fence on day 2 of the event!
- If the characters from Fence were in a band/orchestra/music group, what would this look like? Which instrument would each of them play, and why?
- Make a playlist of songs that remind you of Fence! This can be as specific or as general as youād like.
- Take a lyric that reminds you of Fence and draw some fanart inspired by it
- What music tastes do you think each of the Fence characters have? Why? Could music be a bonding point between certain characters?
- Write a song inspired by Fence.
I think a band!AU would be fun. There's a lot of versatility there, since there are multiple types of bands. You've got big school concert bands and jazz bands, and you've also got small independent bands that come in all sorts of genres (like rock, pop, metal, etc).
If you did a school band, then you could have Exton be a school where the best musicians end up going, and have it so Seiji, Jesse, and Nicholas play the same instrument. There are school concert band competitions, and individual competitions for instrument players, so you could still tell the same story as the comic in broad strokes, although a lot of the smaller details would end up changing. School concert bands usually have dozens of people rather than being a single team of 4 (or 5, in King's Row), so it's not quite as competitive. A lot of the people who wanted to join the fencing team but couldn't in main canon would probably have ended up being in band, but not being first chair/section leader.
If you did the small independent band route, you'd still be able to have the whole "rivals" aspect of the main story, but a lot of other stuff would end up changing. The main characters might even end up being aged up a bit, and I'd be interested to see how characters like Bobby, Tanner, and Kally fit in. Did Kally end up leaving the band to focus on school? Is Tanner still with them, or did he end up leaving the band to be with Kally? Is Bobby their manager, an occasional substitute player, or a permanent member of the band? Does Kally ever come back to watch them perform, or even join them on stage for the occasional special event?
You know how (according to Aiden) Harvard's has dated around 6(?) different girls, and (according to Kally) he's somehow managed to stay friends with them all?
At first it didn't make sense to me. I mean, Harvard's an easygoing guy, he definitely seems like the type to try stay friends with his exes, but all of them? Surely at least one of those relationships would've ended painfully, right?
But then we met Dafna (one of the girls he dated) at that fencing tournament, and it started to make sense. He and Dafna almost certainly met at last year's tournament. They probably went on one or two dates during or right after the event, then realized that they both lived several hours away from each other and decided to stay friends over text/social media. And of course, since Aiden was there at least years tournament, Harvard probably introduced him to Dafna.
It wouldn't surprise me if most of the girls Aiden talked about have similar stories. It's not easy for anyone to stay friends with every long term girlfriend they've ever had, but if these are all just girls that Harvard met at fencing tournaments or on vacations, went on a few dates with, and then decided not to pursue a serious relationship with, then it makes sense for all of those girls to agree to stay friends with him.
AMBER GLENN, PROTECTOR OF WOMEN, THEY CAN NEVER MAKE ME HATE YOU
Kaori Sakamoto was favoring one leg when she walked off the ice. She hid it well during the program itself, but... she wasn't crying because she missed that second jump. She was crying because she was injured. She probably hurt her leg during the jump sequence that she didn't finish.
The scene where Gian teaches Nicholas the flick has to be my favorite scene in the Fence comic series.
Imo it's the scene that showcases everything that this series does well:
It pulls triple duty using exposition to introduce us to a new character while furthering Nicholas's arc.
It teaches people who are new to fencing about the sport while also keeping things interesting for those who already understand it.
It gives unique and memorable traits to minor characters like Gian, which makes them more interesting.
And it does all of that while also being funny.
how it started:
how it's going:
Not pictured: Seiji Katayama, because he doesn't seem like the sort of person who'd have time to watch Netflix, let alone the sort of person who'd have time to try to guess other people's usernames and passwords.
The "not my type" line has been misinterpreted and memed to death for the past 10 years, but it's important to recognize what Percy was really saying during that scene: "I didn't even realize you were intoĀ guys. Frankly, I kind of thought you still hated me. How did IĀ missĀ this?"
The "not my type line" read very much like a confused echo. He might have been wondering who Nico's typeĀ was, but that would have been more due to curiosity than anything else.
The way the fandom has somehow twisted it into Percy being offended about not being Nico's type always annoyed me, and the fact that it's become the basis for most of their fanon interactions drives me up a wall. There's so much more to their dynamic, and I feel like this is one of the cases where canon actually fleshes their dynamic outĀ moreĀ than popular fanon does. Canon shows a friendship that transforms, drastically, from hero worship, to grudge induced hatred, to an unsteady alliance (on Percy's side) and a conflicted crush (on Nico's), to a tenuous but slowly solidifying friendship that's backed by years of complicated history.Ā
But so many of the people on Tumblr and Pinterest still reduce it to a dumb "not my type" meme.
Absolutely LOVE the fact that unlike most superhero movies, Superman didnāt do everything.
It was set up as āoh no Metropolis and Jarhanpur are in trouble! He needs to quickly finish one and then help the other!ā But no. Instead he just called his friends and they stepped in where he couldnāt. Even at Metro, he had Mr. Terrificās help.
This is not a one-god-army kinda Superman. This is a I-could-try-to-do-it-all-or-I-can-ask-others-to-step-in-when-needed and isnāt that the crux of humanity right now? All of us may not be able to go where the problems are happening but we can help those who are there. We can also face the problems happening in our neighbourhood with people who canāt be close but can help in whatever way they can.
Because, sure, Superman could do it all himself. But that inevitably leads to a Superman who is stretched too thin and getting increasingly weary. But having people he knows he can rely on? Well isnāt that the best power anyone can haveā¦
I'm sorry, I saw this post and I immediately thought of that one scene from the Red Robin comics, and I had to make an edit.
For those not familiar with the Red Robin comics, there's this scene where Ra's al Ghul tries to send assassins after all of Tim's civilian friends, and most of his family members. He responded by calling basically every superhero friend and family member he had and a) warned them about the assassins and b) asked if each of them could save one of his civilian friends from said assassins. Leading to all of his friends and family members getting saved, Ra's al Ghul getting mad, and Tim Drake delivering his famous "I'm not Batman. I have friends" line.
Superman calling on the Justice gang for help (rather than trying to run around the world saving everyone by himself) reminded me of that scene.
