The British public: I can ignore mass sleaze, corruption, homophobia, sexism, blaming the victims of Grenfell tower, letting migrants drown and then criminalising lifeboats forming trying to save them, criminalising basically any form of political protest by banning any āannoying protestsā, constant breaking of own COVID rules, not taking action against the systematic and violent misogyny in the police force, mismanaging the pandemic so that the country had the worst death count in Europe, the prime minister saying ālet the bodies pile up in their thousandsā, a terrible brexit deal, caring more about statues than BLM protesters, consistently voting to starve children, profiting of Saudi Arabiaās war crimes in Yemen, constant breaking of international law, lying to illegally pirogue parliament, still illegally occupying the Chagos islands, tax evasion, the foreign secretary holidaying while hundreds die in Afghanistan, literal eugenics from a political advisor, breaking international human rights laws with a bill that enables the government to revoke the right of Citizenship of immigrants arbitrarily but I draw the line at having an office party when I wasnāt allowed to.
Only just realized Garbage put out a new album this year, and like.
Itās fine? Not, like, a particularly new sound or anything, or any particularly hot takes, but itās fine, itās nice, itās good.
But. Godhead.
I am just... disappointed about Godhead. The rhetoric is just the same old unexamined ciscentric nonsense, and Iād expected better from Garbage. I get what theyāre trying to get at, but itās really, really not the way to go about it. Itās tired, and it throws trans women under the fucking bus.
hot take maybe but i hate when people use afab/amab as shorthand for anything to do with someone's body, or thoughtlessly uses it as a replacement for gendered language.
like for example if you have a scientific study that says "we found women are at higher risk for xyz than men" you CANNOT just turn around and say "hey guys this study says afab people are at higher risk for xyz than amab people" because you DON'T KNOW!
like, did the study include trans participants? no? then it doesn't tell you SHIT ALL about how someone's assigned gender affects things, because it's not comparing afab people and amab people of various genders, it's comparing cis men and cis women.
oh, and even if it's a medical study you STILL can't jump to conclusions! "cis women are at higher risk for xyz" does not translate to "afab people are at higher risk for xyz" because there are afab and amab people with all sorts of bodies. for example, if cis women are at higher risk for whatever because of estrogen levels, a trans man on testosterone might have a risk level more comparable to cis men, and a trans woman on estrogen might have a risk level more comparable to cis women.
if the study doesn't conclude anything about WHY cis women were at higher risk, or you're not sure if trans participants were included, you might have to say something like "it is unclear how this applies to trans people."
TLDR if you want to replace gendered language with something more inclusive you HAVE to think about what it is you're actually talking about and what assumptions you're making.
Idk a featherless biped do seem kinda gay tho
Why you wanna beholding a man anyway
Had the first session of the psychotherapy that I will be having weekly for the next six months, minimum.
Time to eat chocolate, blast Garbage on repeat and sob hysterically.Ā
Why does therapy never happen on the days you can remember your trauma?
I will, apropos of nothing, kill for the ship that is Magnus/Abigail/Ortus
Ok BUT
If thereās gonna be four books now
What are they gonna do about the colour scheme????
Like Gideon was copper (cheeky hair colour reference?) and Harrow was silver (for a reason?? that Iām sure makes sense???) and I was like 99% sure that Alecto was going to be gold (because duh, Gideonās eyes, and all the thalergy stuff and her whole divine status as lesbian jesus) but now
now thereās a fourth book and what is muir going to do?
Ok BUT
If thereās gonna be four books now
What are they gonna do about the colour scheme????
Iāve been attempting - or, well, I was attempting prior to The Exam Month From Hell - to write some Locked Tomb fic, because I havenāt got much else to do with my time. And itās... surprisingly difficult to figure out the characterization, despite the amount of time Iāve obsessed over these books, because like
Canon!Griddle and Canon!Harrow are both, so, so, soĀ teenage. Theyāre kids whoāve been mistreated their whole lives and are only just starting to be old enough to process that fact, and try to begin processing it. And like. Heck, trauma? I can get that. I can understand that no problem, even if my trauma sure aināt like theirs. But... Iām not eighteen anymore. Iām almost twenty-seven, and while thatās not a million years away from eighteen, it kinda is. And sure, I can still do what any writer does and try to imagine, but the thing is: I kinda donāt want to?
I love these books, and the story they tell, and the characters they explore, but fundamentally, I am not all that there for stories about teenagers. Where Iām at in my life right now, Iām far more there for stories about people whoāve had a while longer to process, or to at least settle into something of an independent existence. I want stories about adults. And because those are the stories I want, those are the stories I want to write.
But the thing is, while I think that thereās something really interesting to explore about how characters like Gideon and Harrow would look, say, even just six years down the line or whatever, their characterization in the books-as-they-are-now is so incredibly tightly bound up in their teenagehood. Disentangling it, and figuring out who theyāll be years later? Thatāll take some work. Iām still gonna try (though gods know Iām not exactly a fantastic writer), but... yeah. Think thisāll take some effort.
eighth house/ninth house parallels are a really interesting part of the books, imo, and it's kind of a shame that silas + colum in particular get written off as unambiguously antagonistic religious dogmatists. bc i think there's a lot of value in reading them all as big complicated foils for one another
Ramble about the Eighth below, only tangentially relevant:
The thing, I think, about the Eighth House, and what makes them compelling for me personally, is that they are in some ways the only house that cares about what is right and wrong.
Don't get me wrong here, many of the other Houses have members who do so - Palamedes comes to mind, that darling boy - but as an institution, the very aim of the Eighth House is (at least nominally, and very much paralleling the Christian Church, historically) to safeguard humanity and society (for such values as they consider human and society, at any rate) by acting as staunch moral shepherds and guardians. They perceive (accurately!) a world in which many donāt give a toss about whatās right, and care only for their own advancement or pleasure, and do their very best to have the discipline to step in and say:Ā āNo! Enough! This is wrong!ā, as Silas does on several occasions throughout the first book.
The problem, of course, and once again, if I can be pardoned for saying so, paralleling reality and especially the Christian Church, is that Silas is, uh, wrong.
Like, so fucking wrong.
Because obviously, we can all see that what Silas does to Colum is horrible. We can see that what Silasā entire HouseĀ has done to Colum, from birth, from beforeĀ his birth, is horrendously wrong, and yet Silas wouldnāt even pause to consider that. It wouldnāt occur to him. Like any group of moral guardians, the Eighth House clings so tightly to an ossified (heh) deontological set of ethics that they never stop to ask themselves if they might be wrong, if things should not, perhaps, be different.
(The real pain in the ass, then, is that sometimes... they shouldnāt. Sometimes you need a person to step in and say that power isnāt goodness, nor cleverness truth. And youād rather have that person be a Palamedes than a Silas, but sometimes Silas is all you have.)
The Ninth, then, is... an inversion of that House, in many ways. Because where the Eighth is about the spiritual health of Society as a whole, the Ninth eschews society entirely. The Eighth House revolves around a total subservience of the self to what they see as the greater good, and similarly, a member of the Locked Tomb congregation is alsoĀ supposed to experience a total annihilation of the self, but do so while striving for a complete eschewal of society. The personal life of the ideal Eighth is the same as that of the ideal Ninth, because it is null - the difference is that the Ninth cannot exist withinĀ society, and the Eighth has no purpose without.Ā
And no, I have no fucking clue what the black vestals they used to send out to serve in, like, the Cohort and stuff did. Made other people feel better about the fact that Someone was doing the spooky shit so they didnāt have to, probably? That has seemed to be the role of mystics throughout a lot of history.
there's a thread on twitter of a French professor trying to make John Locke's pancake recipe and i've been giggling about it for days
my brain has been repeating "alors non John, non non non" since sunday
a bunch of people in the notes have been saying it "sounds fine" and they're valid i guess, but also that's seven fucking eggs for less than a cup of flour, it's not pancakes it's scrambled eggs with a little flour in 'em
Yāall are too used to American pancakes and thinking in modern ingredients.
I make my pancakes the way my (Danish) mum made them, and the way she was taught, with four large, modern eggs (which I bet could easily amount to seven of Lockeās, plus he leaves out a bunch of the whites) and 150g flour. Nobodyās ever complained about them being too eggy. You make them thin and crĆŖpe-like and itās fine.
why did I leave this bra here last night
Honestly I walked into this one
Can someone get me a German word or a neologism or something for the feeling ofĀ āI am glad to see people gathering for X purpose because it is very important and it is heartening to see people come out in droves to support it, but I am very concerned and terrifiedĀ because people are gathering in droves, standing very close together, during what Iād like to emphasize is a fucking pandemic that is not fucking over and some of us have households that canāt afford to get sick again so would you please stop spreading it.ā
Because itās a very mixed feeling and both parts of it are important and Iām tired of having to say the whole thing every time.
fuck myer briggsĀ fuck astrology
