Being raised in a religious (Christian) but also /white/ background is something that will make you feel super weird things about religion. Personally I love it but I also love not traditional religious references in” pop culture”. I love Hozier, Ethel Cain, Good Omens, Supernatural, etc. Things that are “taboo” or “weird” in a “ traditional” context when it comes to Bible references. I’m also a native person adopted by white people so maybe it’s and internal thing about trying to reconnect to a lost and unfamiliar culture but idk. Also a little tipsy so organizing my words about it is hard rn lol

silt and wraught iron. called out of a first date yesterday, now rescheduled. my skin feels like crushed velvet and i smell of petrichor. mist from fog and a freshly lit joint under the warmth of street lamps. is it rude staring in peoples windows? a k mart sits empty in a strip mall somewhere, i wonder if a light flickers inside. they tore down the abandoned house i would frequent outside my home town since ive left, and now to think of it they tore down most of the spaces i inhabited. the abandoned guitar factory is demolished, and the solemn house in polo disappeared. where can i go now to feel it? i’m sure i’ll see them sometime in the ether. my old friend from chicago asked me if i was still writing last year and i said i had nothing to write about. he still sends me his songs and i listen. i can hear the birds chirp through my noise cancelling headphones. i wonder if they know i can hear them.

Those in the funeral industry, what could you say to someone who wants to work in funeral services or wishes to be an embalmer, or to someone outside the field?

1. Bodies aren’t that scary or weird when you spend enough time with them, they are just people who happen to be dead.

2. Mortuary school is difficult for some sure, but it’s not that bad. I say this as someone who used to cry over math hw every night, it’s a lot but the concepts are not difficult themselves. It’s sort of a jack of all trades situation - I’ve studied mortuary law, business practice, funeral home management, crematory operations, human anatomy (x2), thanatochemistry, public speaking, psychology, and embalming ofc.

3. Unless your state allows you to become an embalmer without being a funeral director, don’t go into it thinking you won’t have to talk to anyone cause “Your not a people person”. Getting an apprenticeship (also required for licensure) has violently yanked me from my introvert comfort zone. (Dw, it gets better the more you practice) talking to people and connecting with them is a huge part of being a funeral director. ( in case of dual licensure)

4. This job isn’t for everyone, but you know that. Try getting an apprenticeship/ volunteer at a local funeral home and try things out! It’s hard work, but I love it!
