Receive your new tags same day!

Smog Check:

The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the DMV will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV.

   How soon will I receive my tags/stickers?

Most of the time we can provide them to you same day, but on some occasions it may by next day.  

When you receive them, just follow the instructions provided to properly affix the stickers to the license plate. If necessary, one of our agents would be happy to help you!

   What if I don’t plan on driving my vehicle? Do I still have to renew it?

If you plan to store your vehicle and it will not be in operation during the next year, you may apply for a Planned Non-Operation. There is a filing fee depending on a few factors. Click here for information on Non-Op fees.

Keep in mind: The PNO filing fee may be paid up to 60 days prior to the expiration date without late fees. If you file up to 90 days after the expiration date, you will be liable for late fees on the full registration amount.

If at any time the vehicle is operated or parked where it may be subject to citation, then full registration fees and penalties for that year become due.

  Calculate Fees:

Be aware of the fees you will pay before you make the trip to the DMV. Because every circumstance is not the same, use the state sites Registration fee calculator to add up the amount you’ll owe. For more info on the fees you might come across using the calculator, read the following sections.

    Suspension Renewal:

  California requires you to always have your vehicle insured. If your vehicle isn't insured, the DMV will be notified and your registration on your vehicle will be suspended. We hope this doesn't happen to you, but if it does. Come down to one of our offices and we'll take care of it for you. 

  License Plates:

Whether you receive new plates depends on a few things:

 Vehicle new to the state―Your plates and stickers will be sent to you in the mail. Fees for regular license plates are $61 including the Reflectorized License Plate fee.

Used car, previously registered in CA―You won't receive new plates; you'll receive stickers to affix to the old plates.

You might consider ordering a vanity or specialized license plate at this time. Check out our section on License Plates for info on vanity, specialized, disabled person, disabled veteran, antique vehicle plates and more.

Adding a Name:

  The Application for a Duplicate Title

Download, printout, and complete the Application for Duplicate Title Form. Keep in mind, though, that the true/legal owner must sign the form and have it notarized.

When filling out the application do not forget to include:

·        Owner's full name.

·        Owner's current address.

·        Owner's driver license number.

·        Vehicle's license plate number.

·        Signature to the statement of facts about what happened to the title.

·        Damaged title, if applicable.

         You can also use this form for paperless title certification, transfer of title with duplicate title, or a transfer of title with paperless title.

 Transferring the title into your name also updates the name on the registration. But be prepared to pay the additional fees associated with vehicle registration. You can calculate this amount using the state site's registration fee calculator. In some cases, you might have to complete an Application for Title or Registration.

Donating a Vehicle:

There are a number of avenues you can go down when it comes to donating your car.

To be sure you receive the tax credit for your donation, consult a tax attorney for expert advice.

Inheriting a Vehicle

Forty days after someone passes away, a rightful heir can claim the deceased owner's vehicle. Because some circumstances vary, consider consulting a probate attorney for legal advice.

Here are the steps you, as the heir, must take to transfer ownership:

·        Countersign the deceased owner's Certificate of Title on line one.

·        Complete an Affidavit for Transfer Without Probate.

·        Complete an Odometer Disclosure Statement.

·        Complete the appropriate Statement of Facts sections.

·        Make an appointment to pay the DMV a visit to submit the paperwork and pay the transfer fee.

·        When you transfer the title, the registration will be updated with the new name. All you'll have to do is pay the additional fees that go along with registering your car. Use the state site's registration fee calculator to find exactly how much you'll owe. Also be prepared to fill out an Application for Title or Registration just in case.

Changing a Name:

Write the corrected name under "New Registered Owner" on your title.

1.     Complete a Statement of Facts in the "Name Statement" section. Indicate the reason for the change and sign the form.

If you have recently changed your name―for example through marriage―and need to provide proof of identity for tasks such as applying for a driver's license with your new name, consider obtaining a vital record. Remember the good ole 50's & 60's in your 1967 Doupe De Ville, or maybe that '55 Bel Air cruising the California high ways with the top down?

Well you're in luck, California recently passed the new "California Legacy License Plate Program" offering all of your classic car gurus A license plate that will give your car it's original look and feeling back.

Legislation introduced the California Legacy License Plate program offering vehicle owners the opportunity to purchase replicas of California license plates similar to those issued in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. The program requires a minimum of 7,500 pre-paid applications prior to January 1, 2015. 

Legacy License plates can be ordered for any year model automobile, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer. The Legacy License Plate Program will not replace the current Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plate program.

The DMV is accepting pre-orders until January 1, 2015. A pre-order form California Legacy License Plate Pre-Order Form (REG 17L) (PDF) is available for these plates. The completed form and $50 payment must be mailed to the address provided on the form. Payment can only be made by check, money order, or cashier’s check made payable to Department of Motor Vehicles. Pre-orders will NOT be processed at DMV Field offices or Auto Club offices.

New California driving laws Jan. 1, 2013.

With the new year here, Just Auto Insurance wants to make sure that you are aware of new California auto laws and keep you informed. Read below for new California DMV laws, effective as of Jan. 1, 2013. 

  Passenger Charter-party Carriers’ Act, AB 45: Any driver of a chartered limo or bus will be required to make sure that passengers are of the legal drinking age when alcohol is being consumed in their vehicle. If a minor is found to have been drinking alcohol during the ride, the driver is required to return that passenger to where they were picked up.  

CHP Silver Alerts, SB 1047: The California Highway Patrol will implement a "silver alert" into its emergency alert system to allow it to assist in searches for missing people over the age of 65. 

Autonomous Vehicles, SB 1298: The law will allow for self-driving cars to be test-driven on public roads while a licensed driver is in the driver's seat. The driver will be able to take over immediate manual control in the event of vehicle failure or some other emergency.

Used Car Dealer Practices, AB 1534, AB 1447: Under AB 1534, used car dealers that provide direct financing to buyers must label their cars with specific information about them, including reasonable market value and the source of the information. AB 1447 will require these dealers provide a vehicle warranty, limit them from tracking customer vehicles with GPS devices and prevent them from being able to electronically disable a vehicle without signed consent from the buyer at the time of purchase.

Hands-Free Text and Driving, AB 1536: The law will allow a person to send and receive text messages while driving if they are doing so using a phone's hands-free, voice-operated functions.   

Veteran License Plates, AB 1550: Veterans will be able to apply for specialized plates designating them as participants of specific wars or conflicts with the use of new decals. Old decals will be phased out depending on demand and cost of production.

California Legacy Plates, AB 1658: Drivers whose cars are registered in California will be able to opt for specialized license plates that look similar to plates used in the state in past years.

Electronic Car Insurance AB 1708: Law enforcement will now be required to accept proof of insurance on a driver's phone or tablet.

Traffic Violator School, AB 1888: The law will allow a driver with a commercial license who has committed a traffic offense to attend traffic violator school, thus preventing them from getting a point on their license.

Driving Under the Influence, AB 2020: A person arrested for suspected DUI will no longer be given the option of a urine test. In previous years, the option was given of either a urine test or a blood test.

Choose Clean Cars Act, AB 2405: Vehicles that meet California's super ultra-low emissions standards may qualify for stickers which will allow for single-driver travel in high-occupancy vehicle lanes. 

Vessel Registration Fees, AB 2443: The registration fee for boat owners will increase to support the monitoring and infestation prevention of dreissenid mussels, which attach to the bottoms of boats.

In recent years, the world has been trying to become a more economically friendly place.  Cars have been changing and becoming more & more economically friendly, from full on electric cars to Hybrids, even Diesels that run on vegetable oil. The world is changing and there are more and more people who are striving to make the world a better, cleaner place for us and for future generations to come.

Just because you haven’t made the switch to a hybrid or a vegetable oil powered diesel, doesn’t mean that you can’t help

Recycle used batteries.

Do not put automobile batteries with other household recyclables in curb side bins. Most recycling centers will take your used car battery & give you a small payment for it. You can also take your used battery to most auto parts stores, Auto repair shops, where they will usually take it and recycle it for you. Be sure when handling dead batteries, you are wearing gloves and never set a battery directly on the floor, if not properly grounded, there is a risk of getting shocked. Placing on a small piece of wood, plastic or cardboard is a good surface to place your battery.

If you are storing your car for a long period of time, it’s always a good idea to unplug your battery; this prevents any drainage from the battery.

Check the water level in your batter every couple of months, it should be touching the bottom of the refill hole.

Car batteries have a 98% recycle great, which is much more than most other batteries.

Manufactures recommendations

Keeping your engine in proper running order, helps keep your fuel efficiency at its best.

Always make sure that you are performing maintenance in a timely manner and keeping your tires inflated, will help let your car travel smoothly along, deflated tires cause your car to have to work a little harder to maintain desired speed, causing you to burn more fuel.  If your check engine light should come on, be sure to get your car checked out as soon as possible.

Air Conditioning service

Always make sure your air conditioning has been serviced by certified technicians. Older air conditioning systems contain ozone-depleting chemicals that could release in to the atmosphere.

Remove mercury switches

Some older vehicles use switches that contain highly toxic mercury to activate hood, trunk, glove compartments, etc.  

Since about 2003, there are dedicated organizations that host what they call “Mercury switch out” programs, these organizations remove these components and replace them with non toxic mechanical switches.

If you are not familiar with Mercury, it is a liquid metal that used to often be used in electric devices because of it’s ability to pass electronic current.

Accelerate slowly

You’re sitting at the light, it turns green and the guy next to you is probably running late for a meeting, he punches on the gas as soon as it hits green, the funny part is, you still pull up next to him at the next light.

Driving slowly and accelerating at a slow consistent speed, doesn’t only save your engines life and longevity, but it helps conserve gas and keep more money in your wallet.

Utilize Technology - Computers, tablets & smart phones, navigation systems and GPS there are plenty of options for getting the quickest and safest route to your destination. Most devices can also help you with weather, traffic & road conditions. If you don’t have these portably available, check online before you leave home. Grab a map and mark a few alternate routes, check the 5 day forecast. Whatever it may take, plan ahead of time to make sure you get there with no sudden surprises.

Slow down!! - The conditions of roads are slippery and are often underestimated, leading to a lot of accidents, especially during the holiday season when the roads are a little more congested than normal. Give yourself plenty of time to get there, drive cautiously and if there does happen to be an emergency, stay calm. The worst thing to do is panic, any sudden movements on slippery roads are often why there are so many accidents during the colder seasons, learning how to correct your car from a slide and taking the proper precautions may the difference between making it to Grandmas or being stuck on the side of the road. Be sure to leave a few cars space between you and the car in front of you; always try to avoid sudden movement and braking.

Be Alert! Before heading out, make sure you are well rested and eat a good meal that day. If your husband or wife is with you, drive in shifts and let one of the kids ride up front as a co-pilot. It's always good to have someone to keep you company to sing along to the Christmas station on Pandora or maybe your family favorite Christmas CD. Whether its day or night, if it is snowing or  even just a little un-clear outside, drive with your lights on. This helps cars notice your reflection in case they wouldn’t have otherwise seen your car. Better safe than sorry!

Make sure your vehicle is ready!  You should always keep your car maintained, but this is especially important on long trips. Check all of your fluids, including your coolant, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid and be sure to fill to factory recommended levels. Always keep some extra necessities in your trunk:  Extra fluids, small tool box with basic tools, a small jack, flash light, flares, blankets, boots & battery powered radio. Check your tire pressure and tread and make sure they are set to recommended pressure.

Always carry chains – Of course you want to make sure they are the proper size for your tires and are in working order, it’s also a good idea to have some chain repair links in your trunk also. Chains must be installed on the drive wheels, so know if your vehicle is front or rear wheel drive. Most 4 wheel drive vehicles don’t need chains as their traction is usually pretty good as is. A lot places will not let you pass through the checkpoint without having chains due to safety and liability reasons, so be sure to have them ready to go.

Food & water- Bring along some snacks for the drive, but also bring some extras to not plan on eating during the drive, but to keep off to the side for an emergency.  Make sure to bring enough for and water for everyone in the car for an over-night stay.

Stay filled up - Should you have to turn around, park over- night, or hit a long stretch to the next towns gas station, the last thing you want is to run out of gas. Top off every opportunity and don’t try to stretch it to the next one if you are running below half full, fill up and stay filled up.
