Actual conversation between me and my dad:
Dad: (reading Tylenol = autism article) “see this is why Americans have so many autistic children nowadays, they always trust these pharmaceutical companies”
Me: “well (home country) has a lot of autistic people too, probably more than America percentage wise”
Dad: “what? No, what are you talking about. In all my life I’ve rarely ever seen an autistic person in (home country)”
Me: “what? What about (names a bunch of people who are clearly have autism in our home town)”
Dad: “What are you talking about? those are just crazy people”
My dad, a man who graduated college with a masters degree, was fully adamant that the very clearly autistic and even some Down syndrome people in our hometown were just “crazy people”, and didn’t think twice about it.
