one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.
which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes
and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts
holy shit I've never seen this articulated but OP is EXACTLY RIGHT.

New Tim interview.
I recommend reading it, it’s very long but he talks about a lot.
Just a few thoughts. I'm not really trying to be critical, but it may come across that way. You were warned.
I'm continuously surprised to hear Tim admit that he doesn't plan and has no direction for how things are going to go. He did say that he intentionally drew a parallel with Buck and Theo and the Tsunami. (Shielding Theo from seeing the wreck.) But then he follows with how the other parallels we see are unintentional. I think this is why people don't bother to write meta anymore for the show. (I miss that.) We can write about all the parallels and all of the subtle hints about Buddie, but according to him a lot of them are accidental. I would be embarrassed to admit that some of the best parts of my show are happy accidents. He makes it seem like he is making the show in the editing room with little regard for scripted shots. (This actually explains why Oliver says, 'Yeah, that scene is gay, but I swear we weren't thinking that when we shot it." It makes sense that they didn't see it if Tim edited the scene to show it after the fact.) No plan or even intent. It's just something happening in the process. Again, I would not be admitting something like this.
He has also talked in the past about enjoying writing Buddie content, but reading this makes me realize that if Buddie doesn't happen, it will be because he doesn't know how to do it. He can't follow through because he doesn't plan. He can't draw on a lot of what we see because he didn't mean for those things to happen. Clearly, Tim has talent. He would not be where he is if he didn't have it, but his imposter syndrome and his failure to plan where he wants each season to go is going to prevent us from getting the stories we really want.
Two very sexy men.
Not really a fan of the Buck/Tommy ship.
But I can't really say anything about the fact that they are still pining for their ship when I've been pining for mine going on nine years. Glad I have a lot of Buddie scenes to look back on though. I'd hate to carry a torch for as few scenes as they got.
welcome to 911blr !

Sigh... Oliver Stark. I adore his face. May he live a million years and be happy every single day of it.
First & Last full shot of S9 9-1-1
Walking away is not going to be easy,
because I had to stop and read something. What the hell does this mean? Can anybody give me examples throughout this season to explain what Minear is talking about?
"...reconcile himself safe," Eddie has been trying to be safe all season.
What a waste
of a good episode, BUT also, what a waste of Eddie's development this season. A near death that almost excluded Buck entirely, no feelings realization from either. I'm tired of Minear in ways that I can't fully express. He hates us more than he wants Buddie to be real, and it's fun for him to see us keep coming back and hoping. Lord, give me the strength to break with this show before next season. I'm tired of the big F.U. Minear sends us every season. I know there are a few a#hole fans who have been over the line rude to him, but the majority of Buddie fans usually only put up constructive criticism, or keep their opinions on their own blogs. Way to be Trump level petty. I should never have let what he did to Bobby slide.
Lord, please give me this level or higher of Buddie tonight.
Amen.
🚨9x18: Hearts and Flowers sneak peek is out!
In my heart of hearts, I don't believe they will kill her off. That said, this promo had me clinching and holding my breath.
Oliver talking about the finale.
It's a race against time to save Athena on tonight's 9-1-1 season finale (ABC, 8/7c), and TVLine has your exclusive first look at the harrow
When I think about this scene,
I also think about all that came after it. When it first aired, it was easy to think something else may have happened. But everything after makes me think it didn't. If Eddie had made a pass, Buck would not have sworn to Tommy and Maddie that Eddie was straight. If Buck had made a pass, and Eddie was into it then, again, he would not be swearing Eddie is straight.
One possible thing that could have happened that still fits with canon, is that Buck made a pass, and Eddie rejected him. That is why Buck is so certain Eddie is straight. (If this had happened, I do think we would have seen more of Buck being awkward and embarrassed around Eddie afterward, but there is room for other interpretations.)
Another possible thing that would fit with canon, but is so trope filled and obvious, would be that something big did happen, a kiss or even sex, and they were both too drunk to remember it. That would allow for them never to mention it, and for the memories to slowly come back over time. It would mess with both their heads which actually would be entertaining. (The only glitch in that possibility is that it would have interfered with the larger plot line for that episode, Chim going missing and the wedding.)
I don't think I want anything else to have happened. I've been waiting nine years on this give or take, I don't want something that big to go on behind my back. I need to see the rubber band snap.
