I miss wandering (stumbling) through life with you all
I want to live simply. I want to walk to the cooperative for my groceries. I want to meet new people at little pubs that you have to walk to. I want to swim laps at the leisure center. I want to volunteer at the library and look after little kids. I want to go to weekend markets, take my dog on daily dusk walks, bike to town, spend my time painting, printing, writing and drawing. I want to fall in love here, have kids here, grow old here.
“The Chaotic Corner of Cornmarket, St. Aldates and High Street”
After my first week in Oxford, I wrote my mom a quick email assuring her that I was alive and well, that I would surely survive here for the next six months, if I was careful not to get hit by any wayward buses. Thereafter, I decided to name my travel blog, which was really just a relentless stream of pictures taken with my Canon Rebel T3i, “just don’t get hit by a bus.” Although I preferred to walk or ride my fixed-gear bike around town for the sake of efficiency, I also spent a great deal of time on the local buses. One of the glorious things the IHON Oxford program provided us with was a local bus pass, which became our lifeline, our daily ride into town, and our connection with the locals of Oxfordshire. This is just one of the many busy intersections, in which three bus routes somehow converge in perfect harmony with grocery-laden locals, recklessly cycling students, and foreign people pointing cameras at the famous spires. Miraculously, I only saw about three and a half bus-to-pedestrian related accidents, none of which involved PLU students! On a more serious note, when I look back through my photos and videos now, nearly a year later, I am struck with the ease of it all. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that I miss the colorful personalities, the street musicians, the hidden pubs, and sitting on the top level, in the very front, of a double-decker bus, with an unobstructed view of it all.
