Bats and Rage || Betty and Bruce W
@justicealwaysprevails
Betty didn’t tend to let Red run the show all that often, but there were certain compromises that they had to make. She wanted to be out and Betty did need her on occasion. It was easier to ally that to fight against her. She had seen what that did to Bruce with the Other Guy, and she didn’t want any part of being that paralyzed. So compromise meant that she went out at night. Red didn’t tend to be a rampant creator of destruction like Bruce’s Hulk. She mostly just wanted to help, which might stem from being closer to Betty. They were two different people, but they weren’t fundamentally different really. There was still a lot of presence of mind with Red when she wanted to let Betty see her.
Now, Red’s boots on the wet pavement sounded with dull thuds. It was dark. Late. It was how she had to go out because she was still a big red woman who stood at 6′7″ in an urban area. But she had come out because she had seen a big group of men with bats and knives and one man with a big gun making their way from a tinted vehicle and into a building. That wasn’t the kind of shit you just ignored. She wanted to see what the hell was going on and she used the shadows to get closer.
She wasn’t aware, however, that someone else with just a little more cred than Red was also scoping it out.
Bruce’s file on the Red She-Hulk was considerably thinner than what he had on Bruce Banner, but he hadn’t met her before and his knowledge was quite limited, given her recent reappearance. Betty Ross was someone he was more familiar with simply because there was more information out there about her. When it came to her Hulk form, all bets were off. He didn’t know if it worked similarly to how it did with Bruce Banner or not, although all signs pointed to no. That didn’t mean she wasn’t dangerous.
And impossible to miss. Her movements were more purposeful. She hadn’t noticed him yet, and he wanted to judge her intent, but he knew he couldn’t stand by and watch for long.
It was clear she wasn’t with them. They were there to rob a bank. It was one of the largest buildings in Star City and made it simple for him to conduct surveillance and security precautions while they were still arguing over who would drive the getaway car.
By the time the men entered the lobby, the building was empty. This confused the men, who wandered around looking for a receptionist and checking all the empty offices.
They hadn’t quite put the pieces together that the building had been alerted by WayneTech surveillance and the employees were filing out of a secret exit at the back of the building. Bruce waited until the men were on the second floor before he intercepted Red. “Why were you following them?”

“I would apologize for my sudden absence, but it seems you all managed without me.” NOVA was out of the city - or so it seemed, but Diana had high hopes that they were on the declining end of this rampant roller coaster ride of terror. She inhaled then and paced across his floor a short distance before she continued; her hair wrapped high into a ponytail and was adorned with a tightly woven braid. A red ribbon danced among the black strands of hair.
“Have they removed themselves from the city completely?” Perhaps they would not back down so easily as Diana had gathered and this was merely a moment for them to gather their strength. She paused, then, before her gaze fell on Bruce to really look at him. “Are you well?”
“Have we?” Bruce smiled wryly, but his tone was still good-natured. “You were here when we needed you.” That mattered more than anything else. If she wanted to take a much-needed break, he could hardly blame her. Hadn’t he just taken an impromptu vacation with Wanda? That was something he’d never done before. As their time overseas wound to a close, he found himself torn between wishing they could stay longer and wanting to return to Star City as soon as possible. It wasn’t over.
Nodding, he pressed a hand over his mouth and his index finger idly brushed the skin above his upper lip. “Yes, but they’re still operational.” The more personal question had him hesitating. When he did answer it, the response was vague. “I am concerned.”

Though the holidays were just around the corner, the magician was compelled to get a head start on redecorating the theater. The interior was coming along nicely thus far. With valuable assistance from her manager, she was hard at work adorning the borders of the stage with green, red and white lighting.
She observed her handiwork from the front of the stage, minding the heels of her feet from stepping too far back, lest she slip from the edge. As for her manager, he observed from the right aisles of the orchestra seats. He was asking her if they wanted to decorate the dressing rooms as well. She tapped her finger to her temple and cleared her throat.
“Let’s make sure they work first and then we’ll take a break,” she informed her manager. Her heels clicked against the wooden floors before stopping in between both sides of the stage. With a simple snap of her fingers, she uttered the word,“etanimullI!”
A few seconds passed before all of the lights illuminated the arching borders of the stage.

Although he knew Zatanna was in town, Bruce hadn’t gotten a chance to stop by her theater. NOVA granted enough of a reprieve for him to show up early in the afternoon, before the performance, but he immediately had the feeling this could have been a mistake. She was working and he didn’t want to interrupt.
Instead of approaching, he took a seat in the front row to watch her speak to several people regarding the dressing rooms and how the theater should be decorated. She hadn’t noticed him yet, but he also didn’t bring any attention to his arrival. Bruce Wayne was a high profile figure in the city. If anyone caught wind that he was there, then reporters would be sure to follow. It was rare that he was caught outside the manor and everyone was itching for an interview.
When the stage lit up, he couldn’t help but clap from his seat. It was close to the edge of the aisle, inconspicuous. “Where can I purchase a season pass?”

Floyd was sitting on a high rooftop, his mask and gun at his side as he ate a disgustingly large sandwich with gloved hands. He was supposed to be working, but work wasn’t all that interesting anyway, and Floyd wasn’t looking to make anything easier for Amanda Waller and her ARGUS goons. Not until they let him see Zoe, anyway. Floyd heard the telltale whoosh of a cape behind him and he didn’t even look over his shoulder, instead pulling off one glove with his teeth to pick at the innards of his sandwich rather than eating it whole with the bread. “If you’re here to put me in prison, you’re a little bit too late for that.”
-
Bruce knew Deadshot was contracted to NOVA. Without NOVA in the city, he wasn’t sure what business he had there anymore. It made his continued stay suspicious, to say the least, and it was time to check in with him to ascertain what other motivations he could have. “Do you belong in prison?” he asked directly, even though he already knew the answer. Floyd Lawton needed to be put behind bars. No matter who he worked for. “Waller let you out so you would do her bidding. She’s holding your daughter over you. Do you believe she has any intention of ever giving her back?”
cassandraxxwayne:
Even if her devotion was to the symbol, Bruce would always…be that. She believed it as much as she believed anything, and anytime she’d been given occasion to doubt it, it had been proved wrong. The core of him, the thing that she respected and eventually loved in him, was that he wouldn’t stray. That said nothing of what it meant to her when he’d stepped in as a father, too. Of course she had come to help.
She stepped closer to him and pulled down her hood. Perhaps it hadn’t been necessary to stay hidden just to go home, but she’d been told that reporters and paparazzi sometimes lurked by the manor. When she’d first become Batgirl, keeping herself out of the public eye had been meaningless to her. She’d had no real identity of her own. Her name meant nothing to her or to anyone. Now, it was different. She had slowly and painstakingly built a life and wanted to keep some of it for herself.
Once she was near enough to him, she reached out and laid one hand against Bruce’s arm. “Tell me how.” If he’d seemed at all open to it, she would have hugged him, but there was something heavy on his shoulders as always. She could always see it.
Not all of the children he’d taken under his roof were orphans. Cass was one of those. She had parents, if they could even be called that, but she’d always felt like his own. It had been the same with Tim. Both of them understood different facets of him that made it simpler. It would never be simple with Dick, Jason, or Damian. He loved them all equally, but trust was a different story. It was too hard won and too easily lost. He trusted some of them more than others, of course, although he would loathe to admit it.
“Patrol. NOVA is gone, but local criminals see this as a prime opportunity.” The streets weren’t to the point where they were out of control, it was nothing they couldn’t handle with the number of vigilantes willing and able to keep watch, but still necessary. “The police department isn’t able to handle the number of calls they’re getting. Do what you can to lighten their workload without getting in the way.” They each had a police scanner, and showing up at crime scenes or during a crime in progress wasn’t unusual. Vigilantism was still illegal, so it was a tricky business to help without making things worse.
