Flipped learning - what is it?

Flipped learning is a brand new way of conducting the lesson based on digitally enhanced environment. It leads to blended learning which is a combination of online and traditional studying. What is Flipped Learning actually is?

There is an abbreviation FLIP that means:

Flexible Environment

Learning Culture

Intentional Content

Professional educator

Let’s speak about each component in particular.

Flexible Environment is a possibility to use different learning modes, possibility to rearrange space and layout, support learner’s autonomy. It makes the process of study flexible and motivating.

Learning Culture means that teacher isn’t the only source of information anymore. He is a facilitator who leads the class, and the studying becomes student-centered. Students are involved in studying actively and their success depends only on them.

Intentional Content is the idea of how to develop students’ understanding and fluency. At first a teacher should think of their needs and possibilities.

Professional educator is a teacher who is providing his/her students with feedback, who provides help and assesses their results. His/her role is extremely important as s/he keeps the balance in teaching. A teacher is responsible for fair price, constructive criticism.

To sum up, the conception of Flipped Learning is created by 21 century and new era requires new methods. So, modern teachers should take this way of teaching into consideration.

Internet Security Course - is it necessary in 21st century?

Recently I have taken a course on Internet Security and I should say that such kinds of courses are really important in 21st century. People nowadays are extremely dependant on the web-pages where they spend most of life, but not all of them know how to make their internet surfing really safe.

So, the course gives information about how to choose a good password and keep it in memory, how to differentiate true information from the fake, how to avoid fraud in the Internet and how to take care of your online reputation.

The teacher is not only obliged to teach his/her own subject, but also warn about all possible problems and advice how to avoid that. Many teachers use educational platforms such as Google Classroom, Edmodo etc. They require e-mal and password for students to register. Before registration the teacher may show educational video or explain the rules of safety in choosing a password. He also has to warn about danger of cracking and advise to change passwords in other platforms if they are too simple or contain personal information.

It is also important to explain what sources of information can be trusted and what are not while working on educational project. Before asking students to select some data the teacher should advise to check it, to find three different sources of the information and to compare them. Students should understand that there may be opposite points of views of the same situation or phenomena or simply fake and provocative accounts.

Taking care of online reputation is also an important thing to consider. During the class teacher may present information about people (politicians, celebrities or ordinary people) who has suffered from posting controversial thought or sharing to much personal information. Teacher should say that everyone may be on their places and explain the importance of showing personal information only to a limited people.

To sum up, the course on Internet Security is really important as many people, especially children behave careless in Internet. I hope such courses will change this situation.

My first webinar: summary and impressions

I have recently watched the webinar ‘Through a Child’s Eyes: How Classroom Design Inspires Children’s Learning and Wonder’. It was presented by Dr. Sandra Dunkan, Early Childhood Expert. The goal of webinar was to help educators learn the given content area.

At the beginning of it Mrs. Dunkan provided a good example of different perspectives. She showed the class from the teacher’s point of view. There were posters on the wall, pictures, windows, high wardrobes, ceilings. Then she showed a picture how a 6-year-old child sees the classroom – a row of desks, low drawers, and floor. Because of different height an adult and a child see different images of the same class. That is why a teacher should take children’s point of view into consideration. Moreover, the children of that age are egocentric, do not extrapolate meaning and have myopic vision.

It is important to remember that a child absorbs the environment s/he is in. So Mrs. Dunkan started speaking about the power of everyday moment. She differentiated such moments as a moment of invitation (especially visual aspects of it – a poster on the door), a moment to pause (a corner in the class where children can sit and play), and a moment to connect (a place for communication and forming the connection with the world – a place with children’s photos with their parents.)

I like the idea of a moment to pause the most as the lecturer provided pictures of that place: a canvas, a bench with pillows etc.

It was a very nice topic and I am sure that creative teachers rated the webinar high.

A framework of a listening skill lesson

Listening is one of the key skills and it is crucial for successful communication. Listening helps to develop pronunciation. Unfortunately, it is underrated as teacher in my country pay much attention on speaking or reading. As I have decided to explore listening in detail, I was searching for a good article about it. And I have found this one https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/a-framework-planning-a-listening-skills-lesson. It is the article by Nik Peachey, a teacher and trainer, gives a frame of a successful listening lesson. So I can’t help writing a small review about it.

Everybody knows that listening is divided into three stages: pre-listening (preparation), while-listening (focusing attention of the audio) and post-listening (analyzing the information from the audio) and each stage is analyzed separately.

Pre-listening

Mr. Peachey speaks about three main goals of this stage:

- Motivation: provide interesting information for listening to arouse curiosity;

- Contextualization: make listening as natural as possible;

- Preparation: provide specific vocabulary or expressions that will be useful and challenging.

While listening

In most cases students fail at understanding the message of the audio at the first listening, perhaps because of tension or worrying. So, they really need to listen it several times. Ideally the listening should be graded so the first task should give them general understanding and lead to the next stages. A question or to will be enough to manage it.

The second listening demand grasping some details of the audio, but it shouldn’t require too much. Avoid writing long abstracts – just give a multiple choice task or true-false questions.

The third listening may be used for checking the answers from the previous task or it may require detailed interpretation of the audio.

Remember that listening is a demanding activity to do not load them with exercises, give them time to have a rest, for example, compare the answers with peers.

Post-listening

The next task may be expressing students’ thoughts about the audio or analyzing the content and its linguistic features. The author prefers the first one as he aims at making listening natural. It may lead to speaking and it is a kind of response on the information that was heard. Students may agree or disagree with some statements and it is natural. Speaking about analysis of language, it requires the understanding of language system.

To make a conclusion, this framework can be applied for any audio, but the teacher himself chooses the emphasis he wants to make. He should motivate the students and reduce their fear and enxiety.
