This scene is a very interesting scene, because while they are talking in the context of Ned and Florence's situation, Elizabeth is telling Nathan at a side angle about her own story of Grief and loss, the reason that at this point in the story she can't let herself reciprocate Nathan's feelings, but rather must fight to not let herself get too attached, but at the same time there is a deeper connection that overides her fight and makes her open up when Nathan is around, But in this scene here I don't think she expected Nathan's reply at all, becuase she knows he lost his sister so i think she expected him to think that was on the same level, but He looks at her sees that her pain is deeper than his and instead of the usual sympathetic yes i understand, i felt like that when my sister died, he says Not yet... becuase he is intelligent enough to know that her griving is important and shoulden't be minimised by comparison to other situations, grieving people don't want to hear that other people have had it worse or just the same, they want to feel validated that there pain is great. so Nathan did that and it shocks her out of her painful recollections which is just what she needed in the moment.
