I wonder if moose are more likely to, say, break their legs and keep the abdominal cavity more or less intact. It's the ruptured organs that make roadkill spoil so fast, you know. Or is it just the sheer mass of the moose that means at least some of the meat remains unspoiled longer?

partially it's that they get clipped, usually they're hit in a shoulder or hindquarter, you're right that the abdominal cavity is usually less damaged due to their size, but it's also because you're most likely to get a roadkill list call in winter — the snow gets so deep, and the moose come out onto roads, including highways, for easier passage as well as to lick the salt off the roads, and so a LOT more moose get hit in cold months, when the meat won't go bad as quickly, than when it's warm.

if you DO get a call from ADF&G in the warmer months, it's usually a seizure — someone poached a moose in the off months, and it's been taken from them but it would be wrong to let good meat go to waste, so it goes to the next family on the call list.

you're also usually called very soon after the animal has died. ADF&G makes the call as soon as they're notified. they get a location, i.e. "Parks Highway, between mile markers 101 and 102," then call the next person on the list and tell them where to go get it. often the animal isn't even in full rigor by the time you're out collecting it.

there's a lot of factors that play into this being a functional arrangement and a lot of it is that Alaska is, climate-wise as well as just... the type of people who live there, probably the only place something like this could actually work so smoothly. people know how to break down an animal, most people in AK are subsistence hunters, they've grown up around this kind of thing. if you're on the roadkill list, you're prepared to get a call at any hour of the day or night, go out and assess, break down, and be processing and packaging meat as quickly as possible.

disturbed by how little ppl acknowledge the secondary health risks of vampire bites. if your vampire lover is drinking your blood you MUST be up to date on your tetanus shot. puncture wounds are at especially high risk for tetanus infections. just because your partner was born in 1312 doesn’t mean you have to die like it.

moreover they should be prepping the bite point with an alcohol wipe.

and while I’m at it, I’ve noticed a blithe disregard for health & safety when it comes to blood pacts. can’t believe I have to say this but you should absolutely NOT be cutting your palm open with the pocket knife from your belt holster (??????)

if you’re expecting to be in a blood pact/oath situation please just pick up some sterile finger lancets from the pharmacy. cannot stress this all enough.

Please y’all!! tetanus is NOT caused by rusty metal. It’s a bacteria found damn near everywhere, and wounds infected with saliva are especially high risk for tetanus infections.

it’s also a common misconception that vampire saliva is antiseptic. Vampires spread that myth on purpose. They also CAN cross running water. Make them bathe and brush their teeth!!!!
