Not All Poop Falls Under Our Jurisdiction

Customer: “There’s dog poop in the parking lot. You may want to tell someone to go pick it up.”

Me: “Oh is by our door?”

Customer: “No it’s over behind the carts out there.” *gestures beyond the cart return, a good 200 meters from our door*

Me: “Oh sorry, sometimes dogs poop out there, we just clean it up if it’s in our store or out in front.”

Customer: “I nearly stepped in it! Tell someone to go clean it up!”

Me: “Sure I’ll pass it along!” *does not pass it along*

Pet Store Employee, not Siri

Customer: “I don’t like donating to you guys, I never know where the money goes.”

Coworker: “Well, 30% goes to…”

Customer: “Do you know where the Humane Society donation bin is? The one that used to be on *street name*?”

Coworker: “I don’t, sorry. You could always just drop off your donations at the actual humane society on *road name*.”

Customer: “I didn’t ask you where the Humane Society was, I asked you where the Humane Society DONATION BIN was!! Weren’t you listening?”

Coworker: “I don’t know where the donation bin is. I’m sure you could google it though.”

Customer: “WELL YOU’RE NO HELP.” *storms off*

The Fancy Feast/Friskies customers have no chill. Like the cans could be a cent more than what they thought they were, and they’ll still pitch a fit and throw the cases all over the floor.

Fact: By the time you get around to saying “I’m never coming back here again,” there is a 100% chance that the employee was already hoping you wouldn’t and what you said was just reassuring so thanks.

I like to think I know a decent bit about the animals I want, at least the no brainers and simple stuff, if not I ask and ask and ask the real questions. I use this blog so I don't end up offending/irritating/being a dickbag to the pretty awesome and lucky people who get to work with animals all day. This blog rocks!!

This is one of the sweetest asks I've ever gotten. I'm glad you enjoy the blog! And thank you for doing your best to be educated about your pets. Generally speaking, at least from my perspective, some of my best experiences working at a pet store are from helping customers who were well educated or trying to become well educated. animals are a fucking luxury to own. you do not have any need or right to own animals. they are LUXURY and you should be GRATEFUL that you get to own them. care for your animals properly. don’t feed animals shitty food. don’t buy animals you can’t ever spay/neuter. don’t buy animals you cant house properly. dont buy animals you’re going to leave outside to get fleas and other fucked off diseases. don’t buy animals and have no vets in the area. dont buy animals you don’t have time for. don’t buy animals you can’t fucking afford?? 

once in your care animals need you and depend SOLELY on you do proper research and take proper care of your goddamn animals

A man comes into the store with a blue tick coonhound. I excuse myself from the family I was helping after making sure all of the rats I were with were safe to ask the man what he needs. He's looking for food with his dog, and the family I gave a rat to was picking out their toys, when the littlest girl dropped the travel carrier. I almost sobbed as the rat and dog broke free and ruined my store. Long story short dog ate the rat in front of horrified children and knocked down all of my shelves.

Customer comes into my PetSmart, says she usually gets her fish at Walmart but decided to come here instead because we know what we're talking about. She buys three guppies for her twenty gallon, and after I finish bagging them up, she adds "And I guess I'll take ten of the goldfish too, they're so pretty." I cringe and proceed to explain that the goldfish won't do well with the guppies and would need a much larger tank, or a pond. She, of course, goes "Look, I just want my fish, I don't need you telling me how to take care of them." I apologize and explain that we unfortunately cannot sell her the fish because the tank size is far too small. (At this point, my store manager is behind her waiting to see if he's needed.) The customer immediately flips me off and storms away, telling me that she's going to go spend the money (all $2 of it) at Walmart instead, where the employees "aren't a bunch of smartasses". My manager immediately walks up to me and goes "What the fuck."

Just Pet Store Things #57

It was two minutes before closing and a group of teens come in and head for the fish wall. Just as I go in the back I hear one of the girls,

“That goldfish is awesome! I want it!”

I go in the back to hide, my heart sinking. I turn off the lights and take out the trash and go back out.

The oranda she is looking at is a beautiful white and red, small pom-poms, and 5-6 inches from wren to tail tip.

She is waiting by the fish wall with a one gallon bowl, probably as big as the fish, and before she says anything, I tell her if you get that goldfish it is not going in that bowl.

Her face drops. “Well what sized bowl will it go in?”

I tell her a 20 gallon tank and walk away. I don’t feel bad. There is a sign on the fish tag saying minimum tank size is 29 gallons.

You might be an asshole if:

1) you are talking on your phone during a face to face transaction or while an associate is helping you. 2) you put the money on the counter instead of handing it to your cashier. 3) you walk in less than 5 min before closing to shop. 4) you expect some sort of discount or that we make some sort of exception to the rules and policies for you. 5) when an item won’t scan or ring up and you say “oh it must be free!”, not only are you an asshole, but you are not clever nor the first person to have ever said that.

Not Your Pets, Not a Petting Zoo

The lock on our turtle tank has recently been getting a little iffy, which means sometimes you can still pull the drawer out even if it’s supposed to be locked. We’ve put in a request to have the lock fixed, but it’s still broken for the time being.

We walk by the turtle tank and this family has not only pulled out the drawer, they are PICKING UP THE TURTLES. We rush over to rescue the poor things, and the parents are so dumbfounded as to why it’s a big deal. Your kids are shaking around a delicate animal and poking at it. No, that’s cool.

Why do people think they’re entitled to manhandle our animals? Ugh.

Manners on Backorder

I’m doing go-backs when I hear “You! Come here!” Bracing myself, I walk back to the fish food/treatment aisle, where a customer is tapping her foot, holding up a bottle of ick remedy.

Me: “Hi! What can I help you with today?”

Customer: “I’m furious. Do you know why I’m upset?”

Me: “I’m not sure, what seems to be the problem?”

Customer: *shoving bottle in my face* “There’s only this huge bottle left! I only have a 15 gallon tank! What am I going to do with a huge bottle like this?”

Me: “Sorry, I see there’s a spot for a smaller bottle, we’ve just sold out. If you need a smaller bottle, you can go to *lists other pet stores and aquarium stores in the area* to see if they have more what you’re looking for.”

Customer: “No, I’m going to buy this ****ing lifetime supply. Just know I’m very unhappy.”

Sorry that other people bought it before you. Sorry that you had to spend a whopping $2 more.

Sorry that you didn’t want solutions, just an opportunity to complain.

Alas, I am only a level 5 retail worker. Only the rare grand master retail workers have accomplished such a feat, along with reading customers’ minds and making checkout lines go faster.
