straight vs queer ships in shows are always likeā¦.omg girl and boy shared a lingering glance once? that must mean theyāre in love?ā¦versus i killed my father because he dared lay hands on you. when i was doing it i felt like the divine light of justice and my love for you felt pure and clean and holy because i rid the world of evil in devotion to you.
congratulations to this talented cast!! šš¤
(with the icon herself, Margaret Atwood)
becka āiāll be the commander, you be youā grove probably looooved playing house with agnes
Shoutout to Mrs. Grove, literally laying down her life for her child to protect her from evil. The only bitch in this house who understands the Gospels!!!!
lover, iām addicted
Iām once again rewatching The Testaments and I really like the aesthetic they chose for this part of Gilead, like yes there are hanged corpses everywhere but donāt worry, they are turned into animal feed before they start to rot. But otherwise itās bright and clean and collorfull. Everyone has cute colorcoordinated outfits and people live in big, pretty houses and eat delicious homemade food and there is lotās of nice clean nature and there are flowers and bees and a bunch of armed guards everywhere, but just treat those like yard decorations. Like yes, itās a dystopia but if you happen to be lucky enough you can pretend that you are actually living in paradise and you can commit terrible crimes against humanity and not be woken up by the screams of the dying
In episode 6 of The Testaments, Lydia basically acknowledges that Gilead programmed her to deny connections with other women and become complicit in the oppression, murder and torture of other women because it was her only route for survival. She also says that she knows she is doing the same to the Plums and Pinks now.
It actually reminded me a lot of (what I think is) the first time we see Lydia truly lose composure in The Handmaid's Tale. Essentially: 1) June refers to Emily as "gay" rather than saying she was a gender traitor (in a small way, standing with another woman even knowing there would be a cost). 2) Lydia shocks June with the taser-stick thing and tells June to "remember her scripture". 3) June quotes the beatitudes saying "blessed are those who suffer for the cause of righteousness", which of course is going to set Lydia off because, as we see, when Lydia had to choose between suffering and dying or shooting her friend and supporting Gilead in order to live, Lydia chooses the latter and goes on to join the system that would hurt so many other women. 4) Lydia loses it and starts wailing on June, but is stopped by Serena (who admittedly only gets involved because she thinks June is pregnant) who literally shields June with her own body. So it's not even just that June is an absolute nightmare of a handmaid - it's also that so many of her choices to stand with other women or oppose the system unknowingly shame Lydia. It becomes hard to say you had no choice when you see someone making the terrible choice you could not and taking the consequences. I also don't think it is an accident that in the same episode we see Lydia's flashback, the fallout from Shunammite defending Becka, and (if I heard correctly) the girls quoting the beatitudes ("blessed are those who mourn") in response to Penny's death.
a few of my favorite light-hearted moments from the testaments:
āsketch us, it will last longerā and āswim UPā shdhsjk i love shu so much
when agnes was standing in line looking back at becka and smiling then aunt vidala smacked her but then she went right back to looking back and smiling at becka
ādoes your pearl girl always have to sit with usā
āno youāll look adorable⦠you always doā thatās when i knew exactly what becka was
shu telling hulda she hasnt been made fruitful yet because she could use with growing up and hulda being like is that why you arent either shsgjskk
āthe terrorist?!ā lmao agnes was so appalled
My fave was Daisy saying they had lovely weather that day and Becka going āWhich we already received with graceā š
Lydia saying āI donāt know what Agnes wantsā while she holds a picture of Becka is crazy work
she then says ānot yetā so maybe some beckagnes foreshadowingā¦
the absolute contrast of garth and becka's wedding ceremony where they don't kiss (where traditionally you would, Gilead values aside), vs. becka and agnes/hannah kissing before the ceremony, sealing their own ceremony/promise of sorts.
In a way, if Becka killing her father for vengeance and telling Agnes "I would do anything for you" was her vow, Agnes working so hard to save her this entire episode, using every weapon in her arsenal to get people to help her was hers. Their mutual devotion there is stronger than the state sanctioned marriage
