reading ppl's responses to this i'm realizing that while many people know sea cucumbers can expel internal organs to evade predators (not what i meant), far fewer people on this site anyway have had to pick up and move sea cucumbers around. fair. they're slippery was my point.
What is frustrating about many EU (particularly Slovak) communist organizations is the complete lack of advocacy for Roma. Roma are easily one of, if not the, most marginalized groups of people in the EU.
In Slovakia, for example, 40% of Roma live in segregated neighborhoods/settlements lacking basic infrastructure (following the fall of the socialist government, several laws enforcing segregation of "squatters", "long-term rent evaders" and "culturally unadaptable citizens"—nearly half of the Roma living in these areas do not even have flushing toilets), 80% of students at "special schools" meant for mentally disabled children are Romani and 25% of schools specifically put Romani children in segregated classes.
Yet where are the Slovak communists? Nowhere. Maybe at some festival only preaching to crowds who are already convinced about communism.
Ultimately, Roma are one of the groups who have been most affected by this transition, yet there are no communist movements actually organizing with Roma, which is a major failure on our part.
Speaking as a childhood Harry Potter fan, the enduring persistence of its popularity including amongst adults is 100% because it is slop without substance.
It flirts with the idea of rebellion and emancipation from slavery but ultimately discredits those notions by having the rebel leader become a lead cop in the institution that was repressing him and by making emancipation seem silly.
It reflects the chauvinisms of a British aristocrat who offers an impossible narrative of an abused child escaping abuse through the purity of their Aryan magic blood. It’s a fantasy that doesn’t even pretend to offer catharsis or self-actualization, merely hundreds of pages of occasionally racist drivel about a special little boy who joins the SS after reforming them from the inside.
That’s why it has maintained such reverence - because it doesn’t actually offer a subversive story but the aesthetic of one while reflecting the conservative biases of the author. It speaks to a certain liberal perspective that is progressive only so far as the oppressed don’t hurt their feelings.

My Mother's Life Depends on Your Kindness
My mother is in Gaza, where every day is a struggle to survive. Some time ago, she was injured when shrapnel from nearby shelling struck her back. She tried to endure the pain for as long as she could, but now her condition has become critical.
She has now been admitted to the hospital, and her condition is very serious. She is suffering from unbearable back pain, extreme exhaustion, and every passing day brings more suffering. Watching my mother fight through this pain while I can do so little is heartbreaking.
The doctors told us that she urgently needs emergency back surgery. They warned us that the operation must be performed within the next 6 days to prevent her condition from deteriorating further.
The total cost of this life-saving surgery is $1,000.
Thanks to the incredible kindness of compassionate people, we have now raised $267 through our previous fundraising posts. We are deeply grateful to every person who has donated, shared our story, or kept my mother in their prayers.
That means we still need $441 from this appeal to complete the remaining amount needed for her surgery. We are getting closer, but time is running out, and every dollar brings my mother one step closer to the operation that could save her life.
