We finally completed Gorehowl just in time for ConNooga this past weekend! Upcoming tutorial on how we finished!.
What was, is, and is to come...
We have some really big dreams, us guys. We're all spread out when it comes to the stuff we love, but we come together when it comes time to make some of our beautiful nerdy art.
A lot of our starting stuff is Star Wars, because that's where we got our start. In 2010, I (Hazard Actual/Taylor), and ScoutSierra (Kenny) were working in retail together, and discovered how much we agree on nerdy things. One thing led to another and we decided to go to Dragon*Con together with another buddy of ours. Well, the group of three became a group of four, who then asked if he could bring another buddy along (Taylor/Gangstaalicious). We were fine with it. The group of five was established.
So, anyway, those first year costumes were horrendous, but we learned from there on out just how badly we wanted awesome costumes. It became an addiction at that point.
Year two, we added Tanner (Castaway) and all worked on better Star Wars costumes. Mandalorians to be specifc. I (Hazard) was a member of the Mandalorian Mercenaries already at this point, and almost everyone else wanted to be one as well. Our year two costumes (photo courtesy of Zeherfoto) trumped the prior by a long shot.
When year three came along, we lost a couple of our friends, and it really dragged us down. That same year, however, we met Andrew (Exception) who had been a long time friend of Taylor (Gangstaalicious) and was unofficially drafted into the group, and our costumes improved yet again.
By the time year four came along, Andrew had become one of the group. We all started scheming how we could make the geekiness we all adore apart of our every day life. There, in the crowded atrium of the Marriott Marquis hotel, Those Guys was born.
All in all, we believe the future really holds a lot for us. We've got a few props on the burner right now, and we'll be including some works in progress soon! Stay tuned!
Sabine Wren Blasters
Sabine Wren is Star Wars: Rebels favorite lady character in a long time.
As Mandalorians have grown in popularity in Star Wars culture, we've seen them be added in here and there as important characters. From Boba Fett in the original trilogy and Jango in the prequels, to the Deathwatch in the Clone Wars; everyone loves the armored guys.
Now we have this butt-kicking armored lady:
When we were commissioned to make her pistols, we said: "Why not?!" So we took the job and had a blast doing them.
They took form as a set of 3d printed Westar 35's, and touched them up, did some filling cleaning and adjusting, then we hand-painted those babies to look as much like her custom painted blasters as we could.
What can we say? We have a soft spot for Star Wars and Mandalorians.
Gorehowl Prop - World of Warcraft
We knew, when we started building props, that we had to build something that a lot of people knew. We also knew that we wanted to do something up front that we enjoyed, and since we're all players of World of Warcraft, we settled on the screaming axe of Grommash and Garrosh Hellscream: Gorehowl.
There are several different versions of Gorehowl out there, the old game model, the new game model, the 6.0 game model, and several artistic variations, as well as the one used in the newest cinematic to kill Mannoroth. The last is the one we chose as inspiration.
The first step was taking extruded polystyrene foam -- yes, the stuff used as insulation -- and getting our basic shape. We knew the axe would be big, because it belonged to an Orc, but we also wanted to tone it down to a more manageable human size, while still conveying it's obvious harsh-toned awesomeness.
After getting an appropriate taper to the edges, all the way around, by using just a regular sander, we got ready to coat the bad boy for strengthening and body modeling.
Here, black acrylic paint acts as a sealing agent to keep the harsh chemicals of the body filler from eating away at the extruded foam base. That has a short dry time, even though the application is relatively thick. This was done only once, and you can notice quite a few imperfections still, as the detail will come with the Rage Gold applied to the top coat.
Rage Gold is a body filler, much like Bondo, except that to me it sands much easier, and much finer, and with a longer pot time than Bondo. To me, it's just the better option. Multiple layers were added as detail was needed and added into the mix.
Rage Gold doesn't make an easily accessible glazing putty, and as we were familiar with Bondo's, we used it. The whole item was coated in glazing putty, and sanded. During this stage, we also added the external physical damage seen on the axe in the images. We wanted the axe to look like it had seen battle and had been forged at the hand of an Orc, so we thought that these were necessary, though not always seen in all the imagery.
We skipped a few steps to get to this point, and many different mediums were used to achieve this product. The teeth, seen on the back side of the axe, were all 3d printed on our makerbot. The same goes for the skull. The major detail points, seen on the side of the axe were handcut from worbla, as was the top portions.
A second layer of Rage Gold was applied to give the allusion of the wrapped leather back side, and added depth to the top design. It was also coated in a layer of epoxy for strength and smoothing (the epoxy self-levels so it results in a smooth top surface.)
This is the semi-final primed version of Gorehowl, right before casting. We left rough spots around the teeth and skull to give the illusion that it was jutting through the leather wrap. The primer also allowed us to see what imperfections remained in the master. To our luck, there were few that couldn't also be intentional in design. The beautiful hand model you see in the back ground is Scout Sierra, or Kenny.
All in all the project took a pretty big chunk of time to get out, but it's been worth it. Now we're waiting on the molds to take form so that we can get a cold-cast out.
Star Wars Episode VII
Director J.J. Abrams discusses what appears to be the script with new cast members and old returning.
After months of rumors, Star Wars has finally made the announcement of new characters being added to the beloved universe.
The original trio of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher as well as their counter parts Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) will be joined by an extensive cast of new, young actors who will carry on the Star Wars story for years to come.
Planned as the first of three new movies taking place thirty years after the end of Return of the Jedi, new cast members are as follows: Starting with Andy Serkis, best known for the actor who was stamped with motion trackers and filmed for CGI character Gollum in Lord of the Rings movies. John Boyega, known for his attachment to Attack the Block in 2011, a cult movie based around a London gang defending against an alien invasion. Then comes the only female addition, Daisy Ridley, whose sole feminine attachment to the move has spurred a disturbance in the Force that the Star Wars movies are sexist. (An opinion not shared by this author.) Next comes actor Adam Driver, whose attachment to the movie has been rumored for going on six months now. The HBO Girls star, is perhaps one of the most well known names out of the cast so far. Joining Driver for more male leads are Oscar Isaac, actor in Driver, Robin Hood and Sucker Punch. Actor Domhall Gleeson, famous for his role as Bill Weasley in the massive hit series Harry Potter. Finally, joining the cast, is Max von Sydow, the eldest additional cast member. With a long and illustrious film and theater history, Max Von Sydow is without a doubt the Sir Alec Guinnes/Peter Cushing/Sir Christopher Lee of this film.
Slated with a December 18, 2015 release, Star Wars Episode VII is going to build major suspense for all film fans, as it has already.
Keep up with us, as we'll post all news related to Star Wars Episode VII and any projects affiliated with the Star Wars Universe!
