Hi guys I disappeared from Tumblr for years because of a lot of crap in my life
How has everyone been?? I havent been active at all because of work!
This is an appropriation post for water bottles and sippy cups
because drinking with tourettes is rough and usually looks like this
Yooo I'm almost 20 how weird is that. Anyways I havent like posted here in a long time, hows everyone doing? I've been so focused on my Special Interest of the anime Osomatsu-san that I hardly to much else but look at art of them ✌
NO ITS NOT. DO NOT POST THIS
I have pretty severe Tourette’s and i drive in traffic apocalypse California with no issues. I haven’t gotten into accidents from twitching. It is not impossible. People with Tourette’s can do anything they want. This is super misleading and discouraging, not to mention damaging to the younger generation.
There are no laws against people with Tourettes syndrome driving. Please do not suppress us!
You need to delete this post.
I will not delete this post. I have had severe tics that have made driving severely unsafe for me personally. Of course we can do anything we want but at the time I posted this I could not drive do to my tics. And I know other people that have felt the exact same way. My tic made my arms jerks horribly to the point I have thrown things across the room and one where my entire body seizes up for a few seconds. Couple that with my driving anxiety and ticcing made it impossible and unsafe for me to drive.
I once described having Tourette’s Syndrome to my sister-in-law as “sneezing with your nervous system” and she made the most hilariously horrified face then immediatly got why I never bother holding in ticks I am DEFINITELY using that one from now on
Let’s Talk About Tourette Syndrome
I have Tourette Syndrome.Â
When I was 10 years old, I developed a vocal tic out of nowhere. One week I was fine, and the next, I was making a small vocalization every 3-4 minutes. A couple of months later, I started involuntarily shrugging my right shoulder as well. My tics have changed and evolved throughout my lifetime, but for the last 14 years I have not experienced a single tic-free month, and in all likelihood, I never will again.
Tourette Syndrome is one of those things that pretty much everyone has heard of, but very few people know anything about. When most people think of Tourette Syndrome, they picture an adolescent boy uncontrollably swearing in public, or a little boy consumed by bizarre physical tics. But that’s not the reality for me, or thousands of other people with Tourette Syndrome. So here are the facts:
- We don’t actually know how many people have Tourette Syndrome. Around 0.3% of the population is currently diagnosed, but researchers estimate that about half of all cases of Tourette Syndrome go undetected. Either way, it’s one of the rarest of the neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Boys are three to five times more likely to have TS than girls. I’ve actually never met another woman with Tourettes, only men. It appears in all ethnic groups, but Caucasians are twice as likely to have it as any other ethnicity.Â
- Tics can be “simple” or “complex”. A simple tic is one that includes only a few body parts - things like sniffing, eye blinks, or shoulder shrugs. They usually take place only on one side of the body. Complex tics involve multiple body parts and may be a set sequence of events, like clapping, snapping one’s fingers and then shrugging.
- The majority of cases are mild. Most people, including myself, experience only simple tics. There are people who’ve known me for years who still don’t know I have TS. Tics also tend to get milder as you get older.
- Most of us don’t swear uncontrollably. Coprolalia, or random outbursts of swearing, occur in less than 10% of cases. If I swear, it’s because I fucking well chose to.Â
- Tics can be suppressed, but it sucks. Suppressing tics is physically and psychologically uncomfortable. It’s like trying not to scratch an itch; you can do it, but over time, the urge to do it grows until it’s all you can think about.Â
- Tourette’s almost always comes with a second diagnosis. 80% of people with Tourette’s have a second diagnosis, usually ADHD or OCD. Those three disorders seem to run in families together, and appear to be strongly genetically linked. I was unlucky enough to get all three. Tourette’s also appears alongside anxiety and sensory processing disorders.
- Tics wax and wane. Tics tend to be subtler when a person is calm, and at their worst when a person is stressed out or excited. My tics are usually mild to unnoticeable, but my mother says that when I was filling out grad school applications I was twitching so badly I looked like I was on drugs all the time. Tics will also change naturally over time; an eye-blinking tic will fade away, only to be replaced by a wrist-rolling tic that “fades in” to take its place.Â
- There is no cure for TS, and it’s largely considered untreatable. People cannot learn to stop their tics through therapy, and there are no drugs specifically designed for Tourettes. There are some drugs that can stop tics, but the side effects are so horrific that they are only considered as a last resort for extremely severe tics.
- Tourettes does not impact intelligence. On average, people with Tourette’s syndrome actually have slightly higher IQs than the average population.Â
- Tourettes can cause physical damage to your body. Doing repetitive motions over and over and over again for years is hard on you. I’ve been rolling my right wrist as a tic for about two years now, and I sometimes wake up with a tender or swollen wrist. There’s nothing I can really do about it.Â
Tourette’s Syndrome isn’t necessarily something that needs to be cured; it’s just the way we are. My Tourette’s, along with my OCD and ADHD, are impossible to separate from my personality at this point. It’s just who I am. So if you have Tourette’s, or if your child has recently been diagnosed, don’t worry! With a little bit of understanding and patience, people with Tourette’s grow up to lead full lives. We’re just a little twitchy, is all.
is it still a "real" tic if u just get the urge but ur body doesnt necessarily FORCE it to happen all the time? like i have a vocal tic where i get a strong shake and energy up my chest to my throat and if i dont Make the Sound i just get bad shivers and shake all over and almost cry. really my question is is it still a tic if ur body doesnt force it all the time?
Yeah that is definitely still a tic! I have stuff like that a lot too :/
The sequence of events that just happened Working on school Tic Shake desk Candle holder falls off of jewelry box Candle holder hits glass vase Glass vase breaks in to hundreds of teeny tiny pieces
Nothing hit me but. Fucking. Really?????
Skin pealing from sunburn > urge to pick > resist picking > tic Skin pealing from sunburn > urge to pick > pick at skin > pain > tic ????
So there’s this thing called diseasemaps
It’s really cool and you can put in your location and find other people around you that also have your condition (like tourettes!) and message them. Very cool if you’re like me and want to connect with others!
it’s tourette’s syndrome awareness month
a few friendly reminders:
-no, i can’t stop doing that
-please, stop laughing at my tics
-please, if i’m laughing at my tics and you’re my friend, laugh with me so i can feel less self conscious
-yes, ticcing is exhausting
-please, be nice to people with tourette’s syndrome
You’re all wonderful and our disorder doesn’t rule us! Whether you can overcome it or not, you are valid, important, and amazing. Not every one can handle their symptoms without getting weighed down by them and remember, that is okay and we are ALWAYS worth it
would you count puffing air out of your nose as a vocal tic or a motor tic or something else? i've had tics for about 10 years now (i'm 17) but they've all been motor tics (moving eyebrows, winking, cracking various joints, etc.) and i don't have a formal ts diagnosis. thanks!
I definitely think of puffing air out your nose would be a vocal tic?? That’s just my opinion though. Followers, thought?
Hey so I've been diagnosed with a tic disorder since I was about 15 but they never specified and I keep getting re diagnosed as motor and vocal tic disorder, is it okay to self diagnose as Tourette's?
Absolutely! I was self diagnosed for a while too. My neuro insisted they “no long diagnose tourettes”
!!!!!
Random thing i wanna say and feel is important for people to hear as I've had this issue myself: if you have Tourette's and like a character with it simply by chance or use them as a coping mechanism, that's okay!! Don't let anyone call you a liar for it!!! Don't fake it, but don't feel bad about yourself or doubt yourself if it's legit!! F anyone who says you're lying!! Just be your twitchy little self and be happy about it!! Until you crack a joint and are just in eternal agony for it then don't be as happy I guess-
And for yall without it, don't call other's fakers until you're certain!!! It can really hurt them!! Leave the poor cinnamon rolls alone if you aren't going to help!! You could end up being the reason for many of their life issues!!!
I feel like people need to know this so tada-
