You meet Jack at your job at the library and immediately feel sparks fly. What happens when see you soon happens a little bit earlier than expected.
Authors note: Guys please, this is like my first time writing fan fiction since my 8th grade Tom Holland fan account.
Rushing into work, you’d hoped for a rather uneventful day of shelving books and listening to music (which is against library rules but shh they don’t need to know.) However, a certain handsome E.R. doctor was about to change that when he discovered he needed to begin some research for the department's newest budget review.
Being a newer librarian to the Pittsburgh Library, fresh out of your master’s program, you chose to learn the lay of the land first and help by volunteering for the first few hours of your shift with shelving and reorganizing. Humming along to the music in your headphones, you didn't notice the older man slowly approaching you.
A small cough breaks through the music, making you turn your head quickly as you pause shelving and take out your headphones.
Standing there was the most breathtaking man you had ever seen in your life. His silver and brown curls immediately catching your eye before you began raking down his body, admiring every detail such as the way his arms were littered with freckles (thank you short sleeve t-shirts,) his blue jeans that fit his frame perfectly, and then back up to his arms, which were now crossed against his chest and flexing slightly.
This causes you to finally look up, and much to your dismay, realize that he noticed the way your eyes moved up and down his body.
“Oh, sorry. Hi, yes, what can I do for you?” You ask quickly, trying to keep your composure and managing to maintain yourself well as you smile up at him and look into his hazel eyes.
Can he be any more dreamy? You think to yourself.
A knowing smirk spreads across his face as he looks at you, “I was wondering where you keep your medical journals and literature.” He says, his voice rough and deep, with a slight rasp in it that makes your knees feel weak almost instantly.
Right now is the moment you are oh so grateful for deciding to shelve these past few weeks, thanking yourself for every second you’ve spent going around every inch of this building.
“Ah! Yes, I can show you where they are, here,” You say, turning to check your cart and lock its wheels before looking back at him, “follow me.” You nod, motioning him to follow you as you walk past him towards the main hall of the library, smiling softly.
You turn your head to make sure he’s following, the smile still lingering on your lips as you notice he is. What makes your steps falter, however, was the fact that he was following you with a similar smile and his hands behind his back, watching you carefully.
You look back forward and realize he has now fallen in step next to you on your left. “So, what brings you in today? Are you reading for business or for pleasure?” You ask, turning your head slightly while still walking towards the medical section, which is thankfully placed on the opposite side of the library, giving you just a bit more time to get to know this attractive man.
He laughs softly for a moment as he side-eyes you with a teasing smile, “You know, I don’t think I’ve read for pleasure in quite awhile now,” he jokes, looking away from you and looking around at the library as you both walk. “My job is rebudgeting the annual funding for each department and as one of the lead attendings, it falls on us to write up a proposal on why we deserve a little love.”
You laugh at his joke before smiling and nodding as he explains his reason for visiting. “Ah, so you’re doing a little research then? If you don't mind me asking, what field are you in?” You ask, wanting to learn as much as you can about him.
“Emergency medicine at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. I’m the lead attending for the night shift.” He says, his chest slightly puffing out with pride in his job. “It’s been some time since I’ve done research for the department but if it means finally getting some funding to save lives, I’ll be more than glad to dust off the books and pick up the pen.” He states, looking down at you with a smile as you begin to finally approach the medical section.
You nod along to what he says, wanting to ensure he knows you're paying attention as your smile slightly falters with your arrival to his destination. “What a noble thing to do.” You joke, smiling up at him. “Here we are. Everything you need should be here, including a computer to help look at our catalog.” You say, gesturing to the section as you stop. You turn to face him and get one last glorious look at him. “Medical journals will be to your left and textbooks to your right. And if you need anything else, feel free to find me or anyone else who has a lovely little library badge on.” You say, showing off your badge that shows off your ID photo, name, and the title of Librarian, which you love bragging about.
He nods as you explain and then laughs softly at your brag, making sure to exaggeratedly look down at your badge and make note of your name. “Well it was nice to meet you sweetheart, thank you for the help. I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for you if this old man gets lost amongst all this knowledge.” He says, his voice soft yet deep, and the nickname making you swoon softly before recollecting yourself.
“It was nice meeting you too. See you around…” You begin to say, hoping he may offer his name as you slowly drag out that last word.
“Jack. Jack Abbott.” He says, extending his hand to you.
You smile and take it, trying your best not to blush as his calloused hand envelopes yours perfectly.
You let your hand linger for a moment longer before pulling away softly, not noticing the way his hand followed your own before falling back to his side, him nodding and smiling.
You both turn and walk opposite ways, and you try your best to contain your excitement as you head up to the front desk and take over for the library page stationed there, sending them to finish restocking the books you had gladly abandoned for Jack.
An hour later and Jack is strolling up to your desk, a book and some journals in hand as he walks up. “Hello again.” He says, placing the books down on the counter and leaning on it with his forearms.
You look up at him with a glowing smile, “Jack, it looks like your search was a success. Do any of these scream raise our budget to save lives?” you ask, standing up to reach and grab the books, scanning each one as Jack grabs his wallet.
“Oh yes, I think we will be very successful in our efforts.” He says, pulling out his library card, because of course he has one, and handing it to you, making sure your fingers brush against his as you grab it.
You scan the card and hand it back to him, “Well, I’m glad it all worked out. Hopefully next time you come in, it can be for pleasure.” You say, not breaking eye contact as you try flirting calmly, grabbing the journals and book and handing it back to him as well.
He reaches for them, his fingers brushing against yours once again, but this time, lingering as he looks at you with a smirk. “Oh? You know anything that could offer me a bit of pleasure in here?” He asks back, a rasp in his voice that makes your head swirl.
Your breath catches before you recover quickly, not pulling away. “I can think of a few things.” You say, biting your lip softly.
He chuckles as he watches you, shaking his head softly. “Well then, it looks like I’ll have to come back soon. And not just to return the books.” He says, lifting them up and then bringing them to his side as he winks at you.
You smile and tilt your head to the side, “I’ll make sure to make it worth your while.” You say, your voice soft and smooth.
He feels the small pang that hits his chest and the blush that is slowly creeping up his neck as he looks at you. Oh you’re trouble, he thought, laughing and shaking his head again as he began to push himself to stand up straight.
“I will hold you to that sweetheart.” He says, knocking his hand on the desk before beginning to walk away, but not before calling over his shoulder, “See you soon darling.”
You laugh softly, “Hopefully really soon!” You call out after him, watching him walking away and missing the growing smile on his face and the pep in his step he hadn’t expected to leave with.
Your reunion would come sooner than you think however, when, during closing time, a new shipment of books came in and required a check through. A library page was helping with unboxing when they handed you a box cutter with the blade facing you, slicing deeply through your palm.
And now here you were, in the PTMC waiting room with your hand wrapped in a towel.
You’re texting the library pages about how to close up when your name gets called to head inside.
You walk up and follow the nurse, whose name is Mateo, as he guides you to a room after examining your gash and deciding it was important to run a few blood tests and get you sutured.
“We like to be safe and since you weren’t too sure about the blade’s condition, it's better to check and make sure there was no contamination such as rust that could cause an infection.” Mateo says, reassuring you as he guides you to a room after noticing the slight panic on your face.
You smile and nod as you follow him, laughing softly. “I get it, I just did not expect this to be how I end my night. I really hate blood.” You say, smiling softly but worried and not noticing the very dashing attending’s head that turned quickly at the sound of your voice.
Jack looks over at you and barely catches a glimpse as Mateo guides you into central nine, immediately placing down his chart and walking over. He had picked up the shift tonight after Shen had a last minute emergency and needed him to cover, and was very grateful for that now that you have made an appearance, although he knows he shouldn’t be so happy about seeing you here.
After meeting you at the library, you were all he could think about for the rest of the day. How, before he had even spoken to you, you were nodding and humming along to your music as you shelved books. He couldn’t help but smile, admiring the way the sun had poked through the window and framed you perfectly, making it look as though you were glowing. There was the way you spoke, so energetic and confident, glad to help however you can.
And how could he forget the way you had checked him out before anything else, looking up and down as a blush spread across your cheeks before you finally looked up at him and spoke, making him hold back a laugh and instead settle for a smirk that said a thousand words.
Even when you led the way for all of one minute, he couldn’t help but do the same as his eyes glanced over your body, watching the way your clothes hugged your body perfectly and suited your personality well, dark blue jeans and a light blue button up shirt, the sleeves long and softly flared to show professionalism and comfort.
But of course, he wanted to talk more, so he matched your pace and answered your questions, noticing how you nodded along and listened as though every word he said mattered and ignoring the way his heart fluttered at such attention.
When you walked away, it took Jack five minutes to recover, first from how overwhelmingly drawn to you he was and then from how sad he was now that you were gone.
Once he found all the journals and books he needed for his research, he was glad to start walking toward the front desk and see you sitting there, taking a deep breath before approaching with his cool and confident manner.
He should have given you his number, he thought as soon as he left the building, but you were working and he didn’t want to get you into any trouble. Really though, it's because he was nervous about the fact you were definitely younger, mid-to-late twenties, and he wasn’t sure if your flirty banter was natural or truly meant for him, and he’d rather not have his heart broken by such a beautiful girl.
And yet, here you were, sooner than he expected, in his E.R. and obviously injured. His heart raced quickly, nerves rushing from both attraction and worry before reminding himself you should be fine if you’re walking and talking by yourself. Stopping in front of the door, he took a deep breath before stepping in.
He walks in and shakes his head at the sight of you seated on the bed. “You know, this is not what I meant when I said see you soon.” He teases, looking down at you as he sanitizes his hands and smirks.
You look up quickly, shocked for a second before remembering what he had said earlier that day. You smile weakly as you tilt your head to the side, “What can I say? I was eager to see you.” You joke, laughing softly.
Jack immediately feels a pan in his chest at your weak smile, a small frown showing on his face. “And what happened here?” He asks, directing his question to Mateo as he sets up your vitals.
Mateo looks between the two of you, “You two know each other?” He asks, before seeing the way Jack gives him a look that screams watch it. “Ehem- I mean, we’ve got a deep gash to the right hand, caused by a box cutter with the condition of the blade being unknown. We are going to run a CBC and wound culture just to check as well as give a tetanus shot.” He says, giving you a reassuring smile as you watch him grab the materials for an IV.
“Did you lose a lot of blood when you got cut?” Jack asks, grabbing a rolling stool and bringing it over to sit down in front of you.
You try your best not to stare, and fail miserably as you watch his scrubs flex against his muscles, admiring the way his arms look crossed against his chest before finally answering. “It was quite a bit, I was trying my best not to spill any on the books so I ran fast to grab a towel. I hate blood too, so I wasn’t paying too much attention however one of the pages said, and I quote, it looked like we were setting up for a horror section.” You say, laughing softly to yourself at the comment.
Jack and Mateo both laugh as Mateo gestures for you to stretch out your left arm for the IV and blood draw. “Sounds like you might’ve scared those kids.” Mateo jokes, prepping the IV and taking out the blood draw, then inserting a line for fluids after noticing your pale complexion, handing the blood sample to a nurse outside the room and coming back in.
Jack lets him finish before speaking up, “May I examine the wound?” He asks you, putting on his glasses and looking at you softly. Leaning your head back with fear for a moment then facing him, you nod and try to ignore the fact that the glasses have somehow made him attractive in a whole new way.
Jack put on some gloves and then gently reached out and grabbed your hand, beginning to unwrap the towel around it. The bleeding had stopped so it was easy for him to analyze and assess the gash. “Looks like the bleeding has stopped.” He said, his thumb softly caressing your wrist as he spoke, “This cut is pretty deep, you’re definitely going to need at least four or five stitches. Mateo, it looks like we should be fine without the wound culture, just some rubbing alcohol should do the trick. Prep the suture kit.” He says with a commanding voice, that is doing things to you you never thought you could feel while in an emergency room.
Mateo is quick to set up the kit, placing it down on a tray next to Jack. “I’ll go check on the CBC panels. You should be all stitched up by then.” He says, smiling at you.
“Thank you,” You say, smiling at him and not noticing the way Jack eyes the both of you with a small hint of jealousy before drawing your attention back to him as Mateo leaves the room.
“You might feel a little sting, first from the rubbing alcohol, and then from the numbing shot for the sutures.” Jack explains, pouring the rubbing alcohol slowly on some gauze and dabbing carefully at your wound.
Wincing at the pain, you try your best to stay calm and Jack notices instantly. Not only were you flustered by the stinging of the wound, but you were also flustered by Jack’s overwhelming presence and the way he’s looking at you as if you were the only person in the world.
In an attempt to lighten the mood as he grabs the numbing shot, he looks at you and smiles. “You know, if you wanted to see me so soon, you could’ve asked for my number.” He teases, hoping the joke will distract you enough to not notice the pinch of the shot.
It does, as you immediately laugh and blush at the joke, smiling at him. “I was hoping you’d be the one to ask me. I was working, it could’ve been seen as patron harassment.” You joke, laughing a little more as you realize he had already given you the shot, “Hey! You tricked me.”
Jack laughs at your reaction, loving the way your nose scrunched up at the betrayal but also how quickly you were willing to admit you’d wanted him to have asked you for your number. “I’ll make sure to keep that in mind next time I head into the library.” He says, smirking as he waits for the numbing to start and ignoring the way he can already feel his need to hear your laugh every day for the rest of his life.
You admire the way his crows' feet appear next to his eyes as he smirks at you, which causes you to fall into looking at his freckles and ultimately just admiring his existence, while Jack was doing the exact same thing.
The only thing that snaps you two out of it is Mateo, knocking and opening the door, making both of you immediately look in opposite directions as Mateo walks in. “Hey, I have the blood panels, everything looks good. I also have your tetanus shot here for you.” He says, smiling.
Jack coughs before smiling, “Good job Mateo. Thank you.” He says, grabbing the suture and needle, before dragging it along your palm, “Did you feel that?” He asks, looking at you once again like you're the only person in the room.
“Nope.” You say, popping the p as you say it, making Jack smile.
“Alright, time to start the suture. Once we’re done, we’ll take out your I.V. give you your shot, and then you should be good to go.” He says, smiling as he begins his sutures.
You look away quickly, deciding to distract yourself with whatever is happening outside the room as Jack focuses on suturing up your wound. Once he’s done, he claps his hands, signaling for you to finally look back and smile.
“Ta-da. All done, and with quite perfect sutures if I do say so myself.” Jack brags, smirking and watching you as Mateo comes over with gauze to wrap around the stitches. “Alright, I am going to go grab your discharge papers while Mateo covers the last steps. Be right back sweetheart.” He says, standing up and winking at you before heading out the room.
Mateo takes out your I.V. and does your shot, going over how to take care of your stitches and when to come back when Jack walks in. “Alright, well it was great meeting you. Make sure to stay safe out there.” Mateo says walking past Abbott out to the E.R. but not before sending him a quick wink, which makes Abbott roll his eyes and yet smile.
“Here are your papers,” Jack says, handing them to you and making sure your hands brush against each other once again, causing you to blush and smile. “Let’s hope next time we meet on your turf again.” Jack jokes, smiling at you.
You laugh and smile at him. “Thank you, I’ll make sure to be oh so careful from now on.”
Jack smiles and nods before hearing his name get called, “Ah, well, duty calls.” He says, turning to leave.
“Wait!” You shout quickly, walking up to him and grabbing the pen out of his scrub pocket on his chest. You quickly rip off a piece of your discharge paper and scribble down your name and number. “Here, now that I’m the patron, it's more appropriate.” You say, handing him the paper and his pen and winking at him.
Jack laughs, throwing his head back in the process as he takes the paper and pockets it. “Fortune favors the bold, but I’m glad it gave me a second chance.” He says, making you laugh too.
“It looks like it gave us both that second chance.” You say, smiling at him as his name gets called again, causing him to groan before looking at you one last time.
“I’ll text you as soon as I get the chance.” He says, before quickly leaning in and giving you a kiss on the cheek and then rushing out.
You smiled as you walked out of the room as though you were on cloud nine, a nurse coming over to guide you out of the E.R. through the ambulance bay and yet all you could think about was a little text from a very hot attending.
