“Of course you will. Don’t you ever doubt that for a second.” Turning, Lucy put two fingers under Kayla’s chin to keep Kayla’s eyes on her. “You are the fucking strongest person that I have ever met, Kayla. You are going to be so much more than fine. You’re going to kick this in the ass because if anyone can, it’s you. You’re… you’re a warrior.”
"Thanks. I haven't felt strong in awhile - so thanks for reminding me." Kayla tried but she was too vulnerable to hold the tears back. A year of bottled up emotions were pouring out. She moved her head in her hands for a few moments and composed herself the best that she could. "Can I stay here tonight?"

“—-Do you want to talk about it?” The two blondes hadn’t talked in god only knew how long. After Jessie’s first time in rehab, the pair soon fell out of social interactions because of her lack of need or want of drugs, but seeing the blonde so scared and — broken — caused the Puckerman to slide her way into the seat across from her.
“God, no." Kayla turned away from the former friend. She always felt abandoned by Jessie although now she understood the reasons better. Sobriety was far from easy when surrounded by addicts. "But I feel like I need to if that makes sense... I'm so used to not talking anything real you know? Few people want to know the gritty truth.”

“Is this because me and Mase got serious? Because I’ll go fuck someone else right now,” Leah said. She was freaking out a bit, she couldn’t believe that her best friend would willingly admit herself into a facility. “You know I got your back forever, you’re not living off of me- you’re living with me.”
"No! Wow Leah talk about jumping the gun. I'm actually starting to like the guy." Kayla knew telling Leah would be the hardest. They were always attached at the hip; one and the same. It was a huge part of the reason moving to NoCal had been so hard on Kayla. Over the year they went a few months here and there without contact but it never lasted longer than that. "It's not anything you are doing I promise. It's me. I've given up everything I wanted. Berkeley, soccer, my trust fund and most importantly Kris - and I can’t keep going on like this.”

“I know. It’s scary.” Lucy murmured, keeping Kayla’s hand firmly in hers. She didn’t want to babble endlessly. Kayla didn’t need that. Lucy just hoped she could find some sort of comfort in the fact that Lucy understood what she was going through.
Kayla wasn't used to so much silence around Lucy. The quiet was unsettling but she knew there wasn't anything Lucy could say to ease her mind. She was about to make the biggest commitment she had ever made."I'll be fine. Right?"
leahxhamilton :
“What did you do?”
“I asked my dad to get me into a rehab.” Kayla looked down. She never thought it would go this far for her, she was used to being in control. “I’m at rock bottom and I can’t keep living off of you.”

Kayla closed her eyes in an attempt to hold the tears back. She had never felt so weak and hopeless. Everything in her already wanted to squander the opportunity. But it helped to know she had taken the first step. Like Lucy said, one day at a time. “Thank you. I didn’t realize how much I needed to lean on people until now. You’ve been so supportive.”
“A bit terrified of what I’ve signed myself up for.”

The Brothers McMullen (1995)
{ leap in the dark }
Kayla had been sitting in her car for an hour watching the house she grew up in. The property seemed so big when she was a toddler and the scope of her life experience was minute.
She spent hours on that yard practicing her foot work with the soccer ball. It was the only time Kayla had away from her mother’s expectations back then. After forcing Kayla out of their lives, they moved the goal that had been there since her eighth birthday. The goal she taught her nieces on. It would hurt if she hadn’t expected her parents to easily get rid of her presence. Her mother had always been waiting for Kayla to prove that she was a mistake.
Eventually she mustered up the courage to ring the doorbell. The last time she stood in this position Kayla told them she dropped out of Berkley. Through the window, she watched her father approaching, she was grateful that his wife was nowhere in sight.
“Kayla.” Randall was dressed in a suit. Kayla recognized it from his collection of church clothes. “What are you doing here?”
“Hi dad. Nice to see you too.” Although Kayla wasn’t anticipating the visit to be nice at all.
He crossed his arms, his signature frustrated move. “She told you not to come back.”
“Still worried about obeying her orders. It’s nice to know nothing has changed.” Kayla had promised herself she would tone down on the sarcasm but that comment couldn’t be held back. “I need help dad. Please hear me out. I’ll leave before mom gets out of work. Former girl scout’s honor.”
The joke Kayla had overused much over the years elicited a chuckle from him. That gave Kayla hope. “Are you considering going back to college?”
“Not immediately. There are other things I need to work through – I can’t handle the pressure of college right now.”
“You’re always quick to give up.”
“I have my reasons.”
“Lack of ambition.”
“Maybe.”
“What is it you want Kayla?”
“I want to go to a treatment center. A rehab. I know that friend of yours, John or James or whatever said the place he sent his daughter worked.” Kayla still was unsure whether she was ready to get sober. Although she was now convinced nobody who ever got clean was 100% confident it would work. “Without my trust I can’t afford it dad. I can’t even afford food. Without Leah’s help I would be entirely fucked right now.”
“Language.” Kayla mouthed sorry and broke eye contact. His voice became softer, more concerned. “You know the stipulations no college, no trust… but I can cover the rehab. Only if you are serious Kayla. I want you to think long and hard about it. Your mom would leave me in a ditch if this investment ends up being a waste of money. “
“She’d probably leave you in a ditch for helping me either way.”
“I’ll deal with that.” He checked his watch and furrowed his eyebrows. “I have to leave.”
“Okay.” Kayla wanted to say I love you or something resembling it but they weren’t that type of family. “Thank you.”
“On Monday expect a call from me. If you answer I’ll know how serious you are.”
“Talk to you soon.”
While walking away Kayla realized she had once again set herself up to disappoint the people in her life.

Shifting, Lucy tucked a hand underneath her chin to lazily prop her head up while she gave Kayla all of her attention. It was hard for her to sit back. A lot of the time, her mind was buzzing with thoughts during conversations and she was the one doing most of the talking. But right now her role was to just listen and be the supportive friend that Kayla needed her to be. Only after she was sure Kayla was done did Lucy speak. “Everything that you’re feeling right now is completely valid and okay. And it’s okay that it isn’t easy. Drugs are an addiction, and addictions aren’t just something that you can quit overnight. Especially when they help get through tough situations.” Pausing, she did her best to think about what to say next. “You have to remember that your experience is your own. It can’t be compared with anyone else’s. If you rush it, it won’t stick. You have to be patient with yourself.”
"Every time I think about quitting it feels impossible. I know it isn't but I don't have that kind of willpower. How did you do it?" Kayla felt relieved simply from discussing her issues. It helped that unlike everyone around her Lucy was sober. She had accomplished what Kayla wanted to work towards. Lucy's words relieved a lot of the guilt Kayla felt for being so out of control. For ruining the greatest part of her life. "If I wait too long Kris is going to fall in love with someone else. I don't think I could handle that. I haven’t even hooked up with anyone since the break-up because all I can think about is Kris. The last time I went two months without sex I was sixteen.”
