Analysing Book Covers
I found some meditation and breathing books and looked at how they use fonts and font layout.
Shadow Photographs
Some photos around my house of shadows coming through windows and doors.
One of the photos is a reflection of me in the window that’s why you can see me. I like the little window of my neighbours house you can see in that photo.
I edited the photos in Lightroom.
Story Poster
I made a final poster digitally. I had my design drawn out in my sketchbook (I posted it a few weeks ago).
I made the window silhouette and a simple chapel in Illustrator. I downloaded a tall font from DaFont.
I opened my Illustrator file in Photoshop so I could distort my window easier. I played around with perspective and the size of my chapel until I was happy.
Hare Idea
Continuing on from yesterday I drew some visual breathing exercises and made thumbnail sketches using them as inspiration.
I wasnt too sure about the colours I was using and thought they might be too harsh for what I want. I researched a bit about colour psychology and thought the meanings of blue and red would be suitable. I initally used markers for my colours and then tried out differnt blends in photoshop. I decided to stick with my sunrise palette. The red is too much.
I made four developed thumbnails using gouache and a fineliner. I like 1 and 3.
1 is very much inspired by Joe Webb and his collages where he mixes both colour and monotone images. I made a quick poster in photoshop using pictures from the internet. I made the background with the brush tool. The font is Acumin Pro Light.

Hare Idea Development #2
Starting sketching out ideas using my mood board as inspiration. I like the idea of a colourful background and a black/monochrome foreground. I quickly tried out different monochrome foregrounds of Irish paths and landscapes with colour backgrounds. I just used paper to do it quickly.
I painted using a sunrise colour scheme in gouache. I wanted to explore a sunrise but not in its linear blue - orange gradient. Something circular could be interesting. It reminds me of how breathing is portrayed. I definitely want this idea to be calming and gentle since that is what the poet is expressing when she sees the hare so the idea of “breathing” is something I’d like to explore further.
Hare Idea Development #1
The first stages of developing an idea based on the lines :
I looked down between ledges of high thorn and saw The hare, absorbed, sitting still In the middle of the track; I heard Again the chirp of the stream running.
I first researched some Irish hares and quickly drew them in my sketchbook. I painted the sky at dawn and made paper collages.
I made a mood board in InDesign and found the artist and printmaker Teresa Winchester. I alo came across Quim Marin and I’m very inspired by his use of colour.
Chapel Window
Developing ideas based on a windows shadow and silhouette. I drew some designs using Irish monastries as my reference and tried different text placements inside the window. I think a stretched out tall font would work best.
I created a moodboard in InDesign and soursed my images from pinterest. After laying out my theme I quickly collaged paper designs in my sketchbook.
I painted two ideas in gouache. I prefer the second one as I think you get a better sence of where the scene is set and why there is a silhouette.
