This was the very first time I did Fashion Design in college. When I came to @lsadlimerick I did not plan to come into the @ba_fashion_lsad This was the very first Fashion project I ever did. I picked Fashion as the 3rd (last) elective option, since I had to pick 3 subjects to try out during my First Year of college. At the time I just thought "OK, lets just get this over and done with so I can get into the Animation course", but reality told me otherwise. Within those 2 weeks in the Fashion elective, I developed a passion. It spoke to me and I saw a new way of creative expression. I started to watch Fashion shows and admire Designers like I never had in my life. Now I am in Second Year Fashion. To be honest, it is a really stressful course, and I even thought about whether I should give up Fashion, but now I can confidently say that I want to stay. @irisvanherpen inspired me to continue to design Fashion - it showed me designs that I used to think were impossible to pull off. I aim to be a capable Fashion Designer with a professional skills set in the future. My fashion collection is based off the process of mitosis. I have divided the phases of this process into six, matching the six garments in this collection. These phases are:

Interphase

Prophase

Metaphase

Anaphase

Telophase

Daughter cell.

I use features of each phase as inspiration and put them into each garment.

For example, the fourth garment (anaphase) has a layered pants. The pines created by the layers are a representation of the spindle fibres that contract to pull chromosomes apart. The two pockets on the pants represent the poles fron which the spindle fibres come from.

I didn't make the garments into obvious cell shapes as seen under a microscope. This is because I want my source to inspire me, not weight down my creative freedom.

There is a solid fabric draped over each garment with a pattern printed on it. The shapes are a result of draping I created with a piece of fabric cut out into a cell shape with a hole where the nucleus would be. This acts as an element that conncects the garments together, and the print represent the state of the chromosome at each phase.

My collection is inspired by the big puffy dresses of the 19th century, the 80s broad shoulders and slim waist, and Chinese HanFu sleeves and waistbands.

I have also been watching runway shows in my free time and looking at other designers' works. Some are very simple and practical, reminding me of tge functionality of the garments' design, while some are bold and experimental, inspiring me not to be afraid to think outside of the box.

This illustration style is my favourite so far. I'm going to go colour the rest of the garments in this style!

Doing some experimentation.

The coloured pencils are very mute and if I want a nice saturated colour it will be time consuming to achieve. It need to be backed up by the markers. It also leaves a lot of textured marks I don't like.

Brush markers work best for this. It allows for percise movement and the pressure is easy to contol to achieve lines of various thickness. Very ideal for fashion illustration.

However, the markers I have are waterbased. Therefore, they do not blend with other colours. I decide to use them for line and shading for the garments. The rest of the garment colour can be added with coloured pencil.

I also don't think black suits this colour palette so far, but it is possible it's just because of the mass use of a lighter red. I will use more brown for the next experiment to see how it turns out, then I may eliminate some of the primary colours.
