Do Eridians know they are different colours. I bet Grace's alien kids love finding out what colour they are. It means absolutely nothing to them but they're like :O :O
Some of them think he's making this whole 'colour' thing up to mess with them and try to catch him out by asking again on a different day to prove he's just saying random noises but he's like you are still blue buddy and they're like :O :O
Like if we met an alien species who had extra senses & they said that some humans felt spingly and some humans felt spoingly I bet we'd all want to know if we were spingly or spoingly humans
#we would create an entire new astrology system about it#spoinglology
Grace, watching the eridian children develop a whole astrology-esque personality typing system based around what colour they are: oh god what have I done
You ever think about how old people have no idea what “survivor bias” is, and take full credit for being excellent out of things where they lucked out?
“Back in my day we didn’t have any of these childhood protective things, we were smart enough not to do stupid shit on our own!”
Except your little neighbour, who got the funniest idea at the age of seven, and got his skull pierced when he slipped?
“Back in my day nobody got divorced, we stuck together and fixed our problems!”
What about your cousin, who was slowly killed by her husband because she had nowhere to escape him?
“Back in my day nobody had ‘mental problems’, we didn’t whine, we just toughed it out and endured life!”
Hey remember that guy you used to work with, who seemed really friendly and normal, and then suddenly hanged himself ‘for no reason’?
“Back in my day we didn’t have any of this ‘gay’ or ‘transgender’ thing.”
You did, but your family cut all ties with her before you were born.
You kinda start seeing it in everything they think, if you start looking for it.
Me: "Damn people are REALLY BAD at knowing when to tag their eyestrain art/images...either that or they just don't care about photosenitive epileptic people like me. I feel really sad now."
Person: "But Allison, what if they just don't know or understand what qualifies as eyestrain and what doesn't?"
Me: "You know what? That could be a factor...While it is always better to be safe rather than sorry (so YES people should always tag eyestrain even if they're unsure if it "counts" or not) maybe you've got a point?"
Anyways! HERE'S YOUR HANDY GUIDE TO WHAT CAN COUNT AS EYESTRAIN! I'm pulling this straight from the Artfight rules page about what needs to be labeled and filtered as eyestrain because it's VERY helpful and VERY accurate! I also know not everybody has an AF account and might not always have access to this handy guide, and this is an important resource; That's why I'm sharing it here! (under the cut)
PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!! THIS IS ABOUT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OTHERS!!!
Full eyestrain AF page link
"But Allison! How were you able to screenshot that example if you're so sensitive to eyestrain?"
I dimmed the HELL out of my computer screen and looked away while taking the screenshot and did the same when putting it into this post, that's how lol. BUT YEAH ANYWAYS!!! Once again:
PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!! THIS IS ABOUT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OTHERS!!!
When I see people say "abolish copyright, it only serves big corporations," I imagine saying, "The whole system of employment only serves big corporations....so abolish wages. People appreciate service workers and will tip them even if they don't have to."
Like. Clearly you have not tried to pay the bills on book sales.
We definitely need to reform the copyright system so they actually protect small creators instead of Disney, but a state of total anarchy has never yet been demonstrated to protect the vulnerable. In the absence of regulation, the strong oppress the weak. Bad regulation only helps them oppress the weak more, but no regulation is not the answer.
How to do that is a complicated question. I have some ideas. But I feel like once the end goal is protecting the individual who does the creative work, it's not that hard to brainstorm better solutions.
I mean.... "The human who put pen to paper (hand to keyboard, brush to canvas, etc.) owns the full copyright for their work and it cannot be transferred by any means to any other entity."
That pretty much solves the problem. Everything else is just details. Disney shouldn't be able to own a copyright and the copyright for Mickey Mouse should have ceased to exist when he died.
We could maybe maybe do something to the effect of a creator being able to pass copyright to an heir on their death, but I don't think that's actually that important, and it needs to be an actual human and not a company. What's most important is that Josh D'Amaro (current Disney CEO) shouldn't have a say in shit because he's not the artist. If the artist who draws a character decides to take their art and go home Disney should be fucked, so they should treat their artists well.
I legit think the writer of a book shouldn't be able to sell copyright to a movie studio, because then they cannot be pressured into doing so. Peter S. Beagle had to fight for literal decades to get paid for The Last Unicorn movie because he got ripped off by the studio. That couldn't happen if the studio couldn't give him a contract to sign but instead had to just give him money and a director and let him control the entire process and take their percentage of the money he makes on his work.
You make it, you own it. You didn't make it, you don't own it. Simple.
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.
Hey Canadian pals, this company does have produce sold in Canada, notably ready-to-eat salads at Sobey (safeway, thrifty foods, IGA, etc.) and Loblaw (superstore, shoppers, etc.) stores. So while no outbreaks here have been linked to the massive issue in the US (yet), it might be a good time for a bit of caution.
The Bill hasn't passed yet; however it is very likely. Turkey just shut down the social media accounts of LGBT+ organizations, and quietly banned/"made not possible to see" multiple dating apps for LGBT people such as Taimi. These are small steps leading up to this. Just less than a year ago the distribution of Estrogen was made ten times harder and hormone replacement therapy laws upped the transitioning age from 18 to 21. Please speak for us.
The odyssey by Christopher Noland is an amazing movie and a terrible adaptation of the odyssey and that problem would be fixed if the movie was named any other name then odyssey because that implies that's an adaptation of the book and not Noland's take on it epic the musical is not meant to by an adaptation of the odyssey it's meant to be a musical based on it and it has multiple things that are not accurate and that's fine because that was from the start that's why it's not called odyssey the musical and yet it's still somehow more accurate than the movie
so you're a parent, right? and your kid's school has been keeping in pretty constant contact about their staffing issues. you get it; it's not like education has ever been a well-paid job. maybe you even considered it once, a million years ago, but you discounted the idea as soon as you saw the paygrades - it really is a vocation for those people.
anyway, yeah, your kid's had substitutes for over half the academic year now and it's not that they're bad at their jobs, per se, it's just. well. y'know. a rotating cast of teachers isn't ideal for academic advancement. kids need stability.
but you get why the school hasn't let their usual teacher go and hired someone new. you think he's been on stress leave, maybe? you understand that, for sure; practically everyone is going through burnout right now, ironically. and the guy's the most committed, knowledgable, passionate teacher you've ever met. he has a doctorate, for christ's sake - god knows why he's teaching middle school. but he cares. like REALLY cares. you swear he fully teared up at the last parent-teacher conference when you said your child was considering a career in STEM because of his lessons.
you hope he's doing alright. and you really hope he comes back soon; apparently the last sub believed in intelligent design.
anyway, it's time for the launch, so you'd better focus up and watch-- wait. what the FUCK.
fucked up idea that now has me in a choke hold, and I’m trying to figure out which AU I can put this in because I do not need another “Percy is Odysseus AU” (only for the sake of my sanity lol):
Sally Jackson and Poseidon have a baby boy, Perseus, who is not the reincarnation of Odysseus. He dies from SIDS. Sally, grief-stricken, prays to Poseidon. Angered and grieved, certain that this is a punishment from Styx, Poseidon storms into the underworld to get his baby’s soul back. But he can’t.
So instead, he steals the soul of Odysseus from Elysium. Because fuck that guy and him getting happiness and being with his son when Poseidon can’t have that. And Poseidon knows Odysseus would go ballistic and come after him if he kidnapped Telemachus.
given that Odysseus’s body reforms around him after the impromptu and accidental resurrection, Poseidon turns him into an infant and hands him off to Sally, changing her memories so she thinks Odysseus is Percy. Poseidon takes the real Percy’s body to Atlantis to give him a funeral.
Penelope and Telemachus will be breaking out of the underworld at some point to get their husband/father back.
(legit I don’t know why Poseidon steals Odysseus’s soul instead of someone else’s. Maybe Odysseus was the first person he came across in Elysium)
(thanks for the idea @spasticon1, it is now consuming all my thoughts 😂)
She gets to wake up as an adult instead of a child after being a tree. The first thing she sees is her son (who looks like he’s 13) and thinks she’s fully dead and back in the underworld.
Odysseus is almost sorry that he has to explain the whole fucked up situation he got pulled into. Thalia is going to be furious and seeking to claim custody of her son.
but at least now Dionysus, Chiron, Annabeth and Grover have another ally in their efforts to get Odysseus therapy—someone he will actually listen to at that.
The reason that Poseidon couldn't grab baby Percy's soul was because Melinoe had him. Styx's curse was not at fault for his death, but that doesn't stop the Sea God from blaming the Goddess of Hatred anyway. The Ghost Queen was also fully aware that he would come to steal his son's soul from the Underworld. So she grabbed the little soul and went to her Dad's palace to keep it away from her grief-stricken uncle.
However, Melinoe didn't expect to get attached to baby Percy. Now she was considering having a Demigod of her own. Hades is not prepared for that conversation.
Odysseus was just minding his own business when Poseidon barged into Elysium. When he learned why, he tried to offer the Sea God his condolences. After all, anything else would've crossed a line. (Plus, his wife would've made him sleep on the couch for a month.) Alas, his attempt seemed to piss off Poseidon. Thus, the kidnapping.
Hades is livid when he finds out. Because this was a violation of his domain. His kingdom. On top of that, his brother's stunt was beyond petty. So, he decides to be equally petty and calls Athena tells her what happened. Thus, unleashing the wrath of Mama Owl upon Poseidon.
He also pretends to not notice Penelope and Telemachus sneaking out of the Underworld.
I feel so sorry for Sally. The poor thing is just a victim in all this. She is going to need lots of therapy. Regardless, the inevitable conversation between her and Thalia is going to be very messy.
How does Zeus feel about this mess? About the fact that Odysseus is now his grandson?
Also, I have to imagine that Odysseus' arrival at Camp Half-Blood was very interesting.
Luckily for Hades, it is December, and he can have Persephone help him with this (or more realistically, she talks to Melinoe because Hades will end up putting his foot in his mouth).
Hades doesn’t know that Odysseus has gone missing until all 600 or so of his men who died attempting to return home after Troy come before him, with Penelope and Telemachus at the front, asking what has become of Odysseus.
Hades and Persephone are sure that he reincarnated but Penelope, Telemachus, Polites, Eurylochus and the rest all fiercely reject that idea. He would have told them, and would not have reincarnated without Penelope. Something is wrong.
Hades says he will look into it to make them stop bothering him. And he absolutely plans to. But he is swamped with work and has other immediate disasters to look into and deal with and the matter of one soul vanishing under mysterious circumstances (according to his family) slips his attention.
Meanwhile, Odysseus, silver-tongued descendant of Zeus and Hermes that he is, tried valiantly not to anger the sea god, who had shown up looking for his dead baby’s soul. Odysseus has a moment of mental scrambling because he was sure he would never have to see this god ever again.
Unfortunately, once he gets himself under control, Odysseus’s attempt to offer condolences on the death of Poseidon’s infant seems to have the opposite effect of calming the god. Poseidon took Odysseus’s words as mockery, grabbing him, and a frightful, predatory look appears in his eyes as the god considers him.
Poseidon mumbled something to the effect of “…Perseus is so young…Sally won’t know the difference.” And then he proceeds to kidnap Odysseus.
When they get back to the living world and Odysseus’s body reforms around him he tries to escape, but Poseidon still has a grip on him, and turns him back into an infant, of approximately 5 months of age.
He chuckles as the newly infantilized Odysseus lets out frantic cries and his limbs thrash in panic and confusion. Poseidon presses a finger to the boy’s lips and tells him to hush, as he stares into the aged eyes of an ancient king he despises.
He’d never, in his wildest thoughts ever considered adopting a mortal as his own child, and especially not this mortal. But Poseidon finds a feeling of interest beginning to bloom inside him, remembering the ferocity the king of Ithaca had displayed once pushed beyond the brink of what he could endure.
Power pushes its way into Odysseus as Poseidon forcibly makes him his son, writing out Laertes or Sisyphus’s dna and replacing it with his own (or at least the godly equivalent), turning him into a demigod in truth instead of merely a lie.
He does not stop to consider the fact that Hermes is the boy’s great-grandfrather or Zeus his great-great-grandfather on his mother’s side.
At the same time that Poseidon delivers the boy to Sally, and carefully manipulates her memories to accept Odysseus is Percy, he takes his other son’s body away for burial, after asking Sally to pray to him about the child, he wants to be as involved and know as much about the boy as he grows as possible for a god.
(Sally wonders for a long while why Percy’s eyes seem to have turned an unnerving red color, burning bright and furious when he gets angry, but chalks it up to a side-effect of the resurrection)
For weeks afterward, Odysseus cries and screams himself hoarse until Sally, exhausted, prays to Poseidon, worried that something has gone wrong due to the resurrection, and a medicine bottle appears that will essentially drug the infant into sleep—Sally feels guilty about it, but she is so tired and the neighbors are complaining about the noise. And when she prays to Poseidon with amusement when Percy begins talking, later than normal, with a heavy Greek accent and refuses to call her Mama or Mommy, only Sally, Poseidon comes that night to tell Odysseus that if he does not act like the perfect son for Sally, as if he truly is her child instead of a replacement, then Poseidon will take Penelope and Telemachus’s souls from Elysium as well and punish them for every misstep Odysseus makes.
After that night, Sally Jackson actually gets a good night’s sleep without having to drug her son and he starts smiling at her (something he has not done since Poseidon retrieved their son from the underworld) and calling her Mommy.
Hades had almost-but-not-quite forgotten about the whole problem of Odysseus going missing until Odysseus walks into his throne room, with Zeus’s master bolt in his arms (still in the backpack, Odysseus is not stupid enough to actually touch the weapon) and a very distressing story, all while radiating the power of a demigod child of Poseidon. But he is still, in form and essence, Odysseus.
Annabeth and Grover have known that something is wrong, Percy Jackson acts far too old and mature for his age, half the time he acts confused at being called “Percy”. He acts resentful about being claimed, rarely speaks about Poseidon and never positively. And when he gives an offering at dinner, instead of the best of the food on his plate to his father, he gives the least of it. The smallest portion.
he didn’t even seem too upset when told his mother was dead, he actually seemed almost relieved, and even more so when he learned that he could stay at Camp all year instead of returning to the mortal world, and that the gods rarely interacted with their demigod children.
So to learn the truth? That Poseidon stole a soul from Elysium, that he resurrected and forcibly made that person his son to replace a dead child? Annabeth feels sick, Grover is looking murderous, because he has witnessed so many nightmares that his friend has gone through. The incident where Percy stared at Elysium and started crying makes a lot of sense with this information.
Hades is furious about it all, and gets even more angry when he learns the threats Poseidon made to other souls in his care to make Odysseus obey. He not only sends word to Athena about this, but also sees an opportunity to give himself the chance to gain glory for himself and control the great prophecy, as well as ensure that Odysseus will not be pushed into madness should Poseidon feel the need to make good on his threats of punishment.
he sends Odysseus, Annabeth and Grover back out of the underworld the same way they came in, there is no need for the pearls that Odysseus has been fighting the desire to throw away as soon as he got them and starts making plans for Penelope (and likely Telemachus). And swears to Odysseus an oath that he will make certain that Poseidon never gets his hands on Odysseus’s wife or child to do them harm.
(a few months later, Hades shows up at camp to ask Odysseus for a dna smaple, and shortly thereafter, a twelve-year-old girl who has been adopted as the demigod daughter of Hades is released onto the mortal world to spend some time relearning the world until it is time to be reunited with her husband, along with an eight-year-old boy who is called her brother, but, if their genetics were compared, would be known to be her son, and now, not only is he the legacy of Hermes, of Zeus, and of a water nymph, but also the legacy of Hades and Poseidon)
Sally, when she finds out, is going to have a mental breakdown. It won’t be for a while though, as she tries to get Percy to come home for the school year, but he sends a cooly polite letter to her to tell her no, he is staying at Camp.
As Hades has taken Penelope and Telemachus under his protection, there is no need for Odysseus to continue to act like a beaten dog before Poseidon, he can rebel and the only one who will be punished for it is himself.
Thalia and Sally’s meeting is going to get ugly. Especially when Thalia learns about Gabe, and Sally’s emotional manipulations that she tried to use on Odysseus (he saw right through it, obviously).
Zeus is going to be having a severe headache with all of this. And it’s not just because Athena and Poseidon are fighting over his abduction, forced adoption and abuse of her old champion, but a lot of other problems (most notably the rise of Kronos and Hades also getting mad at Poseidon’s actions). It’s going to get worse when Thalia comes back and is added to the mix.
Not to mention that the only two contenders for the Great Prophecy are a resurrected and heavily traumatized husband and wife who have strong reasons to turn against and rebel against the gods. And they now have demigod powers thanks to Zeus’s two idiot brothers.
Some notes:
Odysseus gets banned from playing the Capture the Flag after his first game because he got waaaaay too into it. He didn’t even bother trying to fight the hellhound and almost died. Annabeth had to push him into the water because he refused to do it. Later Chiron allows him to play when the Hunters come to camp, and break the Hunters winning streak.
I don’t think he’d have antagonized the Ares cabin because he remembers Penthesileia and is rightly wary of daughters of Ares, and Ares himself.
(Odysseus is really chill during his multiple near-deaths on the quest for the Lightning Bolt. He would actually be relieved if he died…he’ll get better eventually…once Dionysus gets to him and his family’s safety is assured)
Ares clocks that there’s something fishy going on (pun intended) but it isn’t until Athena shows up while he and Odysseus are fighting (after Odysseus got an oath from Ares to do them no harm if he should win), and lends her strength to the boy that he realizes this is bigger than he thought.
Odysseus tried to leave the Olympians throne room as soon as Zeus mentioned he was leaving, but was forced to stay and “talk” with Poseidon. It does not go well, but he leaves alive and all of his body parts attached.
it helped that a large owl flew in while Zeus and Poseidon were talking and settled on Odysseus’s shoulder, staring murderously at Poseidon the whole time.
Also! Because I totally forgot: Odysseus’s arrival at camp was…. It was bad. Grover reminds Odysseus a little too much of Polites for him to take threats to the little satyr’s life calmly. And the Minotaur got a few dozen holes in his body before dying. And Chiron and Mr D got a very interesting first meeting with this new young demigod. Dionysus enjoyed the feeling of someone actually respecting him and treating him like a god instead of a mortal camp director for once.
(also Odysseus keeps trying to parent Grover and Annabeth on the quest, which is. interesting)
and I made this within 5 minutes of returning. so I think that sums up my thoughts on it. (though im willing to rant more if ppl want it. cause I have COMPLAINTS)
I enjoy a joke about fucked up German fairy tales as much as the next nerd, but it's genuinely striking how often the source for the really fucked up stuff turns out to be "yeah, this is only in the Brothers Grimm version and doesn't appear in any extant oral tradition, and we're like 80% sure they added it themselves". To a large extent it's not German fairy tales that are fucked up, it's two specific German dudes.
It's good and cool to give your characters a single simple, straightforward, non-urgent, super-achievable goal that shouldn't really cost anything or hurt anyone, make that the driving factor for most of their decisions, and then have the Plot do everything in its power to stop them.
