Week 1 - Print - Woodcutting

After experimenting with different colours and the “ghost” effect Susanna had cut out pieces of paper from a book and I done a lot of prints using them which I think turned out to be my favourite.

I plan on making different collages with them.

Week 1 - Print - Woodcutting

On Thursday I spent the day in the print room printing out my woodcut. I was surprised about how it came out because I thought the lines would be a lot messier with the way I cut it but it did turn out better than I expected. One mistake I made was not reversing the image so when I printed it it came out backwards. It’s not that noticeable since there’s no writing on it.

I started out with black before experimenting with different colours. I really enjoyed being in the print room and it was really cool seeing how you can alter just one image.

I drew my reference photo onto a piece of paper and then transferred it into the wood block and started cutting. I really struggled with this part because I made my reference photo a bit too detailed and I also was a bit impatient with it at first. I got the hang of it but not till the end.

Week 1 - Print - Woodcutting

This week I have chosen to do print. We started off with Lino cutting but with wood. I decided for this workshop I was going to focus on hand movement in music. My boyfriend dj’s and a lot of my friends play guitar and different instruments which makes it a bit easier to get primary sources.

I took this picture of my boyfriend and then used my iPad to draw it out on procreate. I wanted to have a better idea of where I wanted the white and where I wanted the black. I do think I made it a little too detailed so it was difficult to get all the buttons.

Movement

For my project, I am exploring hand movements, specifically how hands move during different hobbies. What inspired me most is crochet. I find the way hands move while crocheting really fascinating. I plan to focus on a different hobby each week and try to portray its unique hand movements.

My finished sacred heart dress

The dress itself isn’t sewn together yet but the design is finished. This was a very time consuming project but also a really enjoyable one.

It was a challenge embroidering with the sparkly thread because it was more like embroidering with tinsel.

The glue for the gems is very obvious in the photos but in real life you can’t see the glue. I have it hung up in the church gallery for my assessment and the sequins and sparkles look really good in the light.

Overall I’m really happy with how this turned out and even though it took very very long I really enjoyed the process.

Mask making

My friend very kindly came over to take pictures of the finished project!:))

I done her makeup and added gold glittery eyeshadow and stuck down some of the gold sequins I used to her eyes.

My curtain in my room is a very dark blue which I think worked perfectly with the gold. We took lots and lots of photos and I chose some of my favorite and edited them.

I am very happy with how this all turned out. It was very time consuming but I enjoyed it!

Mask making

I finsihed it all off with more details. I used sequins and glitter to stick onto the mask. I then stuck down the cross onto the crown. I had old sheer fabric and decided I wanted to make a veil to attach to the crown. I used fabric glue and let it dry over night. I was really happy with how it was all looking so far.

I used cardboard and cut out the cross and at home I had a big bag of gold sequins and stars and sparkles. I used gem glue to individually stick down sequins on the cross and the crown.

I cut out bits of cardboard and painted them gold. I then stuck them down onto the mask.

I also used and old broken paintbrush to hold the mask up. I had some sparkly gold paper that I glued onto the broken paint brush. I really like lace and like to add it to my projects so I made a boarder of lace around the cross and the crown.

Mask making

I wasn’t in college this week but I still wanted to take part in the mask making. Since I was doing it at home I kept forgetting to take proper photos so I’m going to try explain my process.

First I was inspired by the Spanish styled Marian crown’s. I started off by sketching a mask on paper to get the frame and then traced it onto cardboard. I used masking tape to make it more sturdy. I then also used carboard for the base of the crown. I work in a pub so we have lots of compostable straws that I stuck down with glue and masking tape. I then used a glittery gold acrylic and painted it.

I have been spending a lot of time on my sacred heart dress. I underestimated how time consuming this would be but I am enjoying the process. I am doing a stem stich with gold embroidery around the heart and I also attend a stem stich in silver to add more detail to the cross.

Here are some primary source pictures I took while at home for the weekend. I live with my grandparents so there is a lot of religious symbols scattered around the house. My home and my grandparents is my main inspiration for this project.

I used red and grey acrylic paint to get the base colour of the heart and cross. Then I used a gold shimmery paint for the thorns around the heart. I plan on embroidering around the heart with gold sparkly embroidery thread and stick down sequins and gems to make it sparkly and flashy.

This week I am doing the dress making workshop. We were asked to make an A-Line dress with a design from our theme. I decided to continue with the sacred heart I made in the soft sculpture workshop. I done a rough sketch of what I wanted it to look like and then sketched it onto the piece of fabric.

Today during my break between my CCS lecture and tutorial I got all the swirls on the cross finished. Tomorow I hope to add a bit more detail.

Mixed materials in 3D workshop

I decided to use wire to make a big cross. I really struggled with the thick wire that I used for the base of the cross. It was hard to keep it symmetrical. After I got the base together I used medium wire to make the swirls. This was a little easier than the thicker wire. I then used the small wire to put all the pieces together.

This is my completed sacred heart for the sold sculpture workshop. I was under pressure for time so I wasn’t able to take photos of my progress, but I’m very happy with how the final piece turned out.

I began by sourcing materials and found some cheap gold gems in Guineys that I thought would work nice for the flames. I used fabric glue to attach each gem individually, which gave the flames a “bedazzled” textured look.

Since I love incorporating lace into my artwork, I cut out circular pieces of lace and stitched them onto the back of the heart. This detail added a delicate and decorative touch that I was really pleased with.

For the thorns, I used gold ribbon, also from Guineys and stitched it down along both sides and the middle to secure it. I attempted to tie the ribbon into a Celtic knot and placed gold gems in the center to enhance the design.

Once the details were finished, I stuffed the heart and cross with cotton and sewed them together.

Overall I’m really proud of how this turned out. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative process and experimenting with different materials and textures. I also bought red gems for the heart and silver ones for the cross, which I might add in my own time as a personal project.
