Veronica Mars S4
[Spoiler Alert]
When I first heard that VMars was coming out with a 4th season I was ecstatic. Oh how I’ve missed that mystery drama series about a teenage outcast and crime solver played by the lovable Kristen Bell. But now, having binge watched the new season, I think it would have been better for them to save millions of dollars and keep the marshmallow fans left with the ending of the 2014 fan-funded movie. These devoted fans donated 5 million dollars to the kickstarter campaign to see Veronica and love interest Logan (Jason Dohring) on screen again. The movie was a love letter to the "LoVe” fans and I was personally grateful.
This past season was more of a middle finger to the fan base. Actually, it was definitely a middle finger. Veronica’s on-again, off-again lover has been neutered as a character, hardly present and only had desperate and useless lines, like, “Please go to therapy with me. Please call my therapist.” And basically begging her to marry him. In the last 10 minutes of the show Veronica agrees to Logan’s proposal. The marriage was simple but altogether anticlimactic. Immediately following that scene, as the couple are packing for their honeymoon, Logan goes outside and BOOM! The writers literally blow him up. Blow. Him. Up. Are you kidding me with this? This is not Game of Thrones, people. This is not good writing. This is cruel. This is unacceptable. If you’re going to kill off a beloved character at least let him go down in a heroic fashion. Don’t just blow him the f*** up in the last 5 minutes, like you guiltily grab a Snickers bar at the last second in the impulse aisle of the grocery store. Not cool. So not cool. And this is how you prove to the viewers that Veronica is still tough and determined? You can be tough and be in a loving relationship. Having a not blown-up husband. You can still be a badass and married.
Another note, this season featured Ronnie making choices that went against her values. Multiple scenes showcase her getting baked and one tripping ecstasy. How is this the same Veronica that stayed away from that lifestyle as a result of her being drugged and raped in season 1? Veronica seemed less driven to solve the case — especially when stoned — where is the determined protagonist we all knew and loved?
No thank you, Rob Thomas, I liked you better in Matchbox 20.
P.S. And what’s up with the sweaters? And I know we all wanted more Dick.
