Unrelated, Best Boy Hank Green made a cute, no subscription, not invasive and full of malwares app.
It's a cute lil app that helps you step away from your phone and leave it alone for a time you set, to stay away from distraction. If you pick up the phone, the knitting lil bean loses all of his knitting... So if you say "I'm setting down my phone for half an hour so I can efficiently clean the table and bag up the trash" it helps resisting the call of the screen. Because you can't make the bean sad. The bean is too cute.
4th place in the downloads jfc. I think people are starved for simple and honest softwares with no evils schemes and data stealing
1st place, above chatGPT at the moment!!!
It’s adorable! I love my bean, I’m so proud of their socks. They work so hard!
It’s like practicing healthy boundaries, but with myself.
Reblog to make ChatGPT loose to a cute knitting bean.
@will-write-for-food this is one of the things I was gonna talk to you about!!!
I'll tell you what I appreciate here: no data collection. Since I've started making the effort to check data privacy, I am deeply disturbed by how bad many of the biggest apps are.
Focus Friend:
vs the widely recommended Forest Focus:
vs this recommended app, with >10M downloads: Finch: Self-Care Pet
😑 Is all data collection malevolent? No. Am I now extremely resistant to sharing sweet fuck all because I'm sick of being data mined? Yes.
I really appreciate how Hank and John Green think about systems and profits and business. They have very clear ideas of the good they want to achieve (like producing SciShow and Crash Course History to make solid, reliable educational videos that help supplement and boost learning for kids who are trying to achieve in high school when their school might not have the resources they need)
And then instead of railing against how the world hasn't made achieving those things easy (which is an injustice, don't get me wrong) they just... focus on solving the problem of how to get it funded and built. Look at the issue, see who's trying to fix it and what they're doing, look for the gaps in the system, and select one that you have the skills to address.
(Hank posted a really good video yesterday called Don't Follow Your Dreams, Follow Your Tools, which was both a reminder of the mindset that's benefited me most but has slipped from my grasp lately, and a fresh perspective on how to play to your strengths.)
There are actually a lot of people like them out there, whose work isn't flashy or immediately noticeable, but who, as the poet* says,
jump into work head first without dallying in the shallows and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight. They seem to become natives of that element, the black sleek heads of seals bouncing like half-submerged balls.

This post is ancient and stupid but I still laugh whenever I see it
Ancient and BRILLIANT, I think you mean.
scantily is basically the most classic way to be clad
How quickly we forget the noble and impenetrable iron
"Stop being funnier than me on my own post" is one of my favorite healthy tumblrisms, along with things like "hang on lemme look that up...yeah this is funny" and explicit tone indicators (positive). Like yeah let's build a world where we playfully format healthy interactions. You made a post and you wanted to be the star but damn, you've really gotta hand it to this other person for their really funny addition, so here's the internet equivalent of giving someone a friendly punch on the shoulder while making sure they know they got a good grade in social interaction
If queenie had a voice
aw i found the sequel!! ;U;
A actual fucking hero dude
I’m tempted to say, “Not all heroes wear capes,” but I get the impression this Fine Fellow probably owns more than one.
Why don't they make stained glass fish tanks? Give those fish Catholic guilt
fascinated by the implication that it's the stained glass that gives catholics the guilt
I FOUND THE. FISH CAN’T SIN POST.
"tumblr's the only social media without algorithms!" "you can still be anonymous on tumblr!" "tumblr's so nice because you don't have to show your face!" WRONG tumblr is special because you can have 3000 followers and still get an average of seven likes a post. i'm doing stand up comedy at a packed venue and one person is laughing
youre right im sorry beautiful
has tumblr heard about the saga of raefarty yet

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs
Oh hey I need this for a research paper I'm writing, thank you!
i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:
"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"
Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.
there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.
Let me tell you a story about Henry Jenkins, when I first met him, about thirty-five years ago.
He was then working on his book Textual Poachers: Television Fans & Participatory Culture. It was 1990, 1991? I had no idea who he was, but a good friend in academia had sent me a photocopy of a chapter of this book, which mentioned me and several of my stories. We met in a pizza restaurant in London.
He asked me what I thought of that chapter. I said that I liked it, which, on the whole, I did, but that he had got the interpretation of one of the stories he mentioned exactly backwards: I explained what I'd actually been getting at when I wrote it, and the context in which it would be read ("touched", a fanzine for LGBT fanfiction). He nodded. He didn't seem to be taking notes, just interest in my views on his writing.
I thought no more of it, til a friend sent me a copy of Textual Poachers, and when I got to the chapter which mentioned my stories, I found: He'd changed what he'd written: he'd outlined briefly the sense of what I'd told him, over pizza, in London, a year or so ago, correcting the original misinterpretation to my actual intent.
I like Henry Jenkins. He's a goldmine of a good guy.
