The Bard, The Cat and The Metro: British Feline Rides Moscow’s Shakespeare Train

A well-accessorized cat rode the subway in Moscow for an unusual Shakespeare celebration that took place inside the Russian capital’s public transportation system.

The British Shorthair was invited on board a subway car as part of the Moscow Metro’s celebration honoring the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

The cat was dressed in dapper fashion, modeled after the cat painted with the English writer in a famous portrait.

The subway ride the cat took, on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line, was part of the U.K.-Russia Year of Language and Literature program and Moscow’s “Poetry on the Metro” project.

The train, which is decorated with pictures of Shakespeare and quotes from his works, has been running on the Filyovskaya line of the Moscow metro for half a year and now the renovated and improved cars are to be transferred to another line – the Arbatsko-Porkovskaya.  

One of the capital’s busiest metro lines, the Arbatsko-Porkovskaya line is used by around one million passengers daily.
