Jess/Matt Headcanons
Because I am the top of the Jett shipping trash heap, and I have to have happy pre-game moments for them
Matt moved to Los Angeles in third grade, and came to his new school in the middle of the year. He was very nervous about it, and he wasn’t sure if he was going to make friends. Jess was the first person to greet him that day (even though she was in fourth grade). She introduced him to the class and helped him around for his first week, and ever since, they had vowed to stick by each other.
Over the summer before she went to fifth grade, Jess hit puberty–and she was the earliest bloomer in the class. She was really insecure, and she immediately called Matt the day before school started. She admitted everything to him, and he listened. When they came to school the next day, some boys made lewd comments to her, but Matt defended her against them and stuck by her side for the rest of the day.
When he hit junior high, Matt’s voice started to change, and he got really nervous. Jess knew that he liked to sing to himself when he thought nobody was listening, and she asked him to sing to her. He was reluctant to, because he was still self-conscious about his voice cracks, but Jess insisted. He agreed, and gave a very good performance for her. After that, he never really seemed to mind it as much anymore.
In Matt’s freshman year, Jess confided in Matt that she had been starting to grow feelings for Mike Munroe, one of the most popular boys in their class. Matt felt a little upset, because he had begun forming a crush on Jess in sixth grade. Despite this, he still supported her, and he met Emily during this time. He also began to harbor feelings for Emily, but he knew in his heart that Jess would always be his first love.
For Matt’s junior year, Matt and Jess always had a system where Matt would drive Jess to school until she got her license, and then after she got her license (which was about halfway through the year, due to her slight fear of driving), she would always drive Matt around.
Jess encouraged Matt to go for Emily after she heard the news that she and Mike had broken up that year. Matt was unsure, because his feelings for Jess had returned by that time, but after she told him that she was currently having a small fling with Mike, he agreed, because he knew that it would make her happy. He asked Emily if she wanted to be his girlfriend a month after that, and the first person he called after that was Jess.
Jess’s graduation party was planned by her mom and dad–and Matt. He had asked her parents if he could help them with anything, and they had agreed to let him help decorate and get cakes and other things. He was more of an errand boy for them than an actual helper, but he didn’t mind. Once Jess found out that Matt had helped her parents plan her party, she hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek–while he was holding the cake he had just picked up for the party later that week.
After Matt dropped the cake, both he and Jess apologized to each other, and both dropped to the floor to pick up various pieces. Surprisingly, the cake remained mostly intact. Once all the pieces had been picked up and put in the trash, Matt began to worry about the cake. Jess smirked and told him that she didn’t care about the cake.
Matt ended up baking a cake for her party himself. It didn’t taste the greatest, but Jess was grateful for it anyway, and she never said anything bad about it. (At least, not directly to him.)
On the night before Jess left for college, she threw a party in her house with her parents’ permission. (They were gone for a date night that night, and had decided to stay at her aunt’s house overnight for Jess to have the party later into the night.) Matt was the first person she asked to help her plan everything. And this time, she gave him the spotlight on almost everything that had to deal with planning.
The party was pretty wild. Neither Mike or Emily showed up, but both had valid excuses as to why they couldn’t make it. Jess had managed to buy some beer for the party, and she was a little tipsy. Matt noticed this immediately and asked her if she was alright. When she responded with nothing intelligible through her slurring, he carried her up to her room.
Just as Matt was about to walk out of her room and go back down to the party to maintain control, Jess blurted out, in a much more serious and less slurred tone than she had had prior to that moment, “Thank you, Matt. Maybe I should’ve gone out with you instead…” He knew that she was drunk, so he told her that she needed to get some rest, and that he cared about her. Just as he heard her snoring, he whispered, “Love you, Jess.”
That morning, when Jess woke up, she had a slight headache, but nothing too severe. She sat up and noticed a note on her nightstand. It read: “Jess, you got a bit drunk last night, so I watched over the house while you were asleep. Everyone left, and I made sure that there were drivers for everyone. Remember, you leave tonight to head up for college. Love, Matt.” And Jess remembered that she had accidentally said that to him that night.
Matt came to say goodbye earlier than everyone else, because he had weight training that night, at the time she was going to leave. He came up to her room while she was packing. The two hugged and she patted the bed to indicate that he should sit next to her. He did, and when he set his hand down, she put her hand on top of his.
“You know, I always knew you had a crush on me, right?”
“Y-yeah, I know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I might not have ended up dating Mike if you did.”
“I knew how happy he made you, and I didn’t want to ruin that.”
“Matt, YOU make me happy, too. You’re my best friend, and you’ll always hold a place in my heart.”
Jess took out her phone and placed it into Matt’s hands then, and she asked him to give her his new phone number, since she knew that he had gotten a new phone earlier that month. He did, and then he gave her his phone so she could give him her new number.
Matt was confused at first, but Jess clarified, “I want you to text me every day. If things with Emily go awry, or if my relationship with Mike fizzles, I want you to know, and I want you to tell me.”
She asked him if she could kiss him before she actually made the move.
When she pulled away, she smiled at him and then gave him another hug. That was when they both realized that they truly did love each other. It was also when they realized that neither one of them were truly ready to pursue a relationship with one another.
At least not yet.
How about some Matt x Jess headcanons? Those two cinnamon rolls need more love <3
yoU ASKED FOR IT. ITS GONNA BE LONG
SHOVEL O’ LOVE HEADCANONS:
matthew earl fletcher is the younger of two brothers, and has both his parents. they’re at the poorer end of the spectrum, but they work hard to make sure their kids have everything they could possibly need. his older brother luke is a semi-successful actor who has always outshone him.
jessica annie brooks is an only-child who lives with her mom, a socialite, and very rich step-father. she has a close bond with her mother, because it was just the two of them until she was 11, but they clash hard. jess’s step dad tries to buy her love; she’s not complaining.
matt & jess met in elementary school when matt pushes emily over into a dirty puddle b/c she was being rude and jess leaps to her defence, pulling matt’s hair and thumping him until they have to be separated by teachers
they never get along until emily starts dating mike, matt’s closest friend, in seventh grade and they are forced to hang out
even then, they only tolerate each other, all hard feelings due to emily’s 10000% aversion to matt (she holds grudges, okAY? he pushed her in a puddle one time)
when matt joins the football team, jess joins the cheerleading team the same year (she drops out after one season, but at least it gets them talking) and they bond over mocking the other players from the bleachers. matt puts up with jess pining over some of the older boys - including mike - whilst she teases him about cute cheerleaders. he plays along, but he is crushing on her pretty seriously. jess cheers loudest for matt after that, and matt still considers it his best football season ever.
at one of josh’s parties, matt finds jess hiding from the crowd in beth’s bedroom. one of the boys on the football team is drunk and had tried to manhandle her and she doesn’t want to go back out there, so matt gets them some drinks and they sit on beth’s bed confessing secrets to each other for hours. jess ends up drunk-kissing matt, and they fall asleep cuddling in their clothes on the bed until beth finds them early in the morning.
the next day, matt gets into a fist fight with the guy who’d tried to touch her, and gets suspended from the football team for a month. he still contends that it was worth it.
after this, they date in secret for two whole weeks. it is seriously strained, because jess doesn’t want anyone to know about them, and it ends quickly when matt catches jess flirting with mike whilst mike and emily are on one of their notorious breaks
matt is super disappointed to find out jess turned down a place at his college and will instead be joining mike and sam at UCLA
when mike dumps emily for jess, jess turns emily on to matt - covering her tracks, but also b/c she thinks matt is hella hot and would make a great accessory for em
matt will always defend jess, which is why the option to take her side in the argument with em in the lodge is so fucking important (also it reveals emily’s tru beautiful bitch queen status ilu em)
matt considers his biggest flaw to be his inability to make smart decisions under pressure (hence the option to abandon jess like y matt y???)
matt rly wanted things to work with em, but she’s not his type, not really, and jess is just looking so good that he feels guilty just looking at her, hot damn
when matt thinks about the time jess hit him with a shovel in the mines he laughs to himself b/c she literally hurts him in every single way possible and he doesn’t actually mind for some reason, dumb boy
after they escape together, matt is the one who spends the most time at jess’ side (particularly cuz mike can’t bring himself to talk to her, too much ptsd and regret). he stays with her and nurses her back to health and brings her the candy she likes when she’s in the hospital and tells her to shut up, you’re so beautiful even now, so just shut up
considering emily dumps matt, basically in the police interview (well, in my pt anyway), matt decides to confess how he feels the second jess gets out of hospital when he’s driving her home. she’s super unhappy and it’s such a surprise that she bursts into tears and sobs into his arms for an hour and he can’t work out what he’s done wrong (!!!)
jess can’t handle her scars, b/c she’s always been super insecure and now she feels really ugly. but matt kisses each and every one of them and tells her that each one is battle scar for how far they’ve both come and he dedicates each one to something that has happened in their lives
jess and matt are the first to move away from where they all grew up, and they move all the way to new york city where matt starts working as a football coach and jess finds her calling as a make-up girl in a tv studio
jess’ step-dad pays for the apartment and matt has serious guilt complex over money until jessica tells him to shut up, because what he lacks in cash reserves he makes up for by being hella fine and besides, she’s got enough money for both of them, DUMB BOY
matt picks jess up from work every single day without fail, because she’s scared of walking anywhere alone, so they walk home together
they get two cats, and they name them beth and hannah on jess’ request, but it turns out that hannah is actually a josh and then it gets really awkward when beth and josh have kittens, so they rename hannah-kitten ‘awkward cat’ and beth-kitten ‘easy cat’
jess is actually the big spoon b/c she always snuggles into matt’s back and tangles their legs together and blows raspberries on his neck
matt is a really good cook, but the only thing jess can cook is blueberry pancakes so she cooks them as a treat every single weekend and it’s annoying at first but then matt starts to think of it as tradition and then he gets rly excited for them every weekend
em is actually happier for them than anyone, she’s so happy to see her re-instated best friend smiling again when she thought she never would
because new york gets proper seasons, jess gets crazy happy when it’s fall and then SUDDENLY SNOW, but this is beautiful snow in a city and not like blackwood at all and they go ice skating in central park for their first christmas and shopping on 5th avenue and slowly, slowly, the bad memories start to go away and be replaced with better ones
matt proposes at the top of the empire state building on christmas eve the following year and jess accepts and starts screaming off the building about how happy she is and they send a video message to all of the ot8 and their huge flash expensive NYC wedding is the first time everyone is together again since the incident and it triggers them all rebuilding their friendships and eveRYTHING IS HAPPY THE END
babies. lots of beautiful babies. and a pug. b/c matt is a sucker for all pugs

My Two Cents: The Gay Talk
Excuse me while I generalize here, but something that annoys me most about the modern parent is their need to make “The Gay Talk” with their kids a thing. I appreciate that you want your child to know that I’m here and I’m queer and “gay is okay,” but the truth is, telling your children that there are gay people in this world should not be significant enough of an event that it needs to be a moment. Save that for telling your kids why the family dog is never coming home, or explaining why the Holocaust happened — not why it’s okay that I exist.

An important message from @danielhowell 🌈
Remember that me hating pineapple on pizza while you wanting it on pizza is an example of “just a difference of opinion. ”
If I worked hard to legislate against there being pineapple on pizza, if I got it taken off of menus and said that it was a mockery of REAL pizza and no one was allowed too have it, then it’s no longer JUST an opinion.
It’s moved on from being just an opinion to an oppressive ideal.
When I decide that people can’t have things purely on the basis that I don’t like them, it’s not “just an opinion”’.
Someone put a billboard on this pizza shop saying it’s okay to vote no for marriage equality. So they did this..
Just gonna leave this here
A student discussing Romeo & Juliet: Like, can you even IMAGINE being forbidden to love someone? The one person you want to marry is the person you can’t have? And all because of other people’s hatred?
My not-straight self: Yeah, that would…. um… be really bad… really not good…
I wanted to end this week with a tribute to the wonderful animated short ‘In A Heartbeat’ by Beth David and Esteban Bravo! It’s beautifully made and its message is so important, particularly for us at the moment in Australia 🏳️🌈💕 Happy #FanArtFriday everyone!
