all of the roy siblings are fashy, but the specific forms of fascism that appeal to roman and shiv respectively are telling. roman backs mencken, with whom he has obvious sexual chemistry, because mencken styles himself as a dictator daddy type. he sees mencken as basically a political spectacle, but a seductive one, because he eroticises that type of masculinity and believes in natural, biological hierarchies. shiv on the other hand gets into bed with matsson, whose team are described as a "nasdaq master race" of young, healthy athletes and fullbright scholars. shiv's liberalism means she finds these types of appeals to meritocracy far more persuasive than mencken's simple display of dominance. shiv and matsson are no less fashy than roman and mencken, but they have different rules for determining who's 'worthy'. of course at the end of the day, both siblings and their respective partners end up reifying the same eugenic and white supremacist beliefs, because that's what fascism does and why capitalism finds it useful.
