During Ar-Pharazôn’s rule of Númenor when Sauron holds the position of the High Priest of Melkor, Galadriel is captured in the middle of a war, imprisoned, and handed over to him as a sacrifice to be made in the Temple of the High Priest, but Sauron has other plans. From Akallabêth to the founding of Gondor, unlikely allies are forged.

“I cannot believe that,” Elrond countered, though he had seemed to calm down from his earlier state. “He would never choose to leave. You know this as well as I do.”

Gandalf raised his eyebrows, a frown passing over his lips. “I do not know it,” he replied in earnest. “There are many things I know, Elrond, but I do not know that.”

Elrond flung his arm through the air. “So, we just let them leave? We put up no fight whatsoever—and let them walk out together?” His arm fell back to his side. “What happens when they come back, Gandalf?” he asked. “With an army at their behest? Tell me—what happens, then?”

“They would not make it past the shores of the Grey Havens,” murmured Gandalf, “and be able to come back.”

“He did it once before,” Elrond reminded him, “and she brought him back then, too.”

“This is different,” whispered Gandalf, leaning forward on his knees. His voice grew more and more tired, more weary of the conversation. “There is a well of history in between then and now—and secrets there within that only we alive now know.”

“Celebrían,” whispered Elrond knowingly.

“Celebrían,” Gandalf agreed.

I like the idea that if Sauron had truly wanted to manipulate Galadriel, he would have turned into Halbrand earlier and remained him till the end of the fight. He was clearly frustrated when she rejected their bond and dismissed his feelings as insincere. That’s why he chose to take her up on her own words and prove just how wrong she was.

She’s on the verge of tears because deep down she knows he’s right. She knows that she loves him, and she hates that he knows it too. But more than anything, she hates herself for feeling it.
