I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.

STOP DRAGGING CHARLIE HEBDO THROUGH THE MUD.
This is important, because I know Tumblr is mainly filled with anglophones and people from the entire planet who don’t know Charlie Hebdo. By spreading stupid posts stating that they are racists and disgusting and posting their cartoons without context, people like you are likely to believe they are indeed a bunch of racists because this will be all you’ve ever heard about them. But please, don’t.
I’ve come across many posts calling Charlie Hebdo “racist,” “antisemitic,” “disgusting” and many other words. Let me tell you one thing: this is pure stupidity. Charb, the director of publication of CH who died yesterday, was antiracist like all the people in the journal. They were fighting against this with all their might through dark humor. To be honest, their cartoons didn’t always make me laugh, because even though I love dark humor, I didn’t really enjoy them all. But it’s not because I didn’t laugh that I didn’t understand them, on the contrary. I could read between the lines. I wish people on Tumblr would stop spreading false accusations and drag them through the mud. Not only is this idiotic, it is also indecent when a whole nation is mourning her sons.
Here, Cabu (who also died yesterday) drew Muhammad (edit: I know this is supposed to be “haram,” even though I found many articles saying it’s not, but the State is not ruled by religious laws. I don’t mean to say that these cartoons are not offensive, I understand they might be for some people. But the press is not to obey religious laws). It says: "Muhammad overwhelmed with integrists" and the Prophet is saying: "It’s hard being loved by morons/jerks." This cartoon is CLEARLY DENOUNCING EXTREMISM, it is NOT insulting Islam.
This one reads: "If Muhammad came back…" The terrorist or at least the extremist is saying "Shut up you infidel!" and Muhammad answers: "I am the Prophet you jerk!" What did Charb mean? Again, it’s pretty clear. It says that extremists are not true believers, they know nothing about their “religion” because to them it’s only a pretext to kill and spread violence. If they truly were muslims, they would never do such things. In short, here, Charb is saying “Islamists are NOT muslims” and “Don’t mix them up.”
Finally, here, a man representative of the whole newspaper kisses a Muslim. The title means "Love stronger than Hate."
THIS is Charlie Hebdo. If you read they were racists, please don’t believe them. These accusations are spread like wildfire by people who are apparently not able to read the cartoons correctly. I know some people will probably reblog this and contradict me, but guess what? This would be freedom of speech as well. Even though I won’t ever agree with you.
Charlie Hebdo was, is and will be for a long time I hope, a way of denouncing all kinds of injustice, and laugh about everything. They made (some) people laugh. They were killed for it.
I am Charlie. And I hope you are too.
I am frigthened.
This is all sickening.
France is the country of liberty, we all have it, by law. Our ancestors fought for it. We fought for it every day. I walked along with thousands of French fighting for the right of a good education when I was 15 years old. We are taught at a young age that we have rights, and that no one can take them from us.
Two days ago, one of our biggest rights was attacked, almost taken from us, and we choose to fight, again. And the world fought with us. They took down Charlie Hebdo, and they woke up a whole country.
But now it’s unbelievable. You turn against us. You say Charlie Hebdo deserved it. Even some French say that. But Charlie Hebdo, whether you liked or not their articles and satire, was a part of the French culture. They were using their freedom of speech to FIGHT racism and any form of oppression.
And now you are accusing them of doing the exact opposite. You spit on their graves, and they aren’t even buried yet. There’s irrespect, everywhere. You asked that we stand with you and your fights, and now you say we somehow deserved having that attack, because we didn’t stand against a satirical journal.
Okay. Take down Family Guy. Take down South Park. I’m looking especially at you, Americans. For claiming that you’re not Charlie because it’s a racist magazine. But I’m waiting. Learn French. Read every Charlie Hebdo, and then you would be able to talk.
Now, there’s two attack. There’s people kept hostages in two places at the same time. Traffic is interrupted, people are staying in buildings, scared. A friend of mine is blocked in a train station, waiting for her boyfriend’s father to go pick her up. She’s afraid to go alone.
There’s still irrespect. Journalists try to do their jobs, and teens are waving and laughing in the background.
Respect is dying in my country.
My family lives near Paris. And I’m scared for them. I’m scared for my friends who attend university in Paris. Near Paris. Near the attacks.
The worst part is that I’m safe. I’m in Iceland. I’m far. And I wait for an answer from my mother who works there.
And while I’m scared. People have the guts to say that our country somehow deserved it.
You make me sick.
Yesterday the news on tv called the Charlie Hebdo attack “the 9/11 for free press in Europe” and it surely feels like that. Not only it was an attack to the core of satire which is like one of the last really free media we have to talk about things without limits
but it’s also evidencing some problems that we have culturally (we as in Europe) speaking of political correctness, satire, humor, and what exactly is the impact of self-censorship on ourselves. If I moved to, dunno, Syria, would it be reasonable for me to want everybody to adapt to my rules, my sensibility, my ideas? No. But somehow, we have learnt to coddle anyone coming here and demanding us to bend over and back to satisfy those requests. And so we did, because we have developed a weak will when it comes to “minorities”. And let me be clear: I’m not saying all minorities are arrogant and demanding, and that in fact most times WE worry about offending others even before they can speak for themsevles.
But you see, when I have to reply to several people telling me that “the Quran forbids to draw the prophet” and people seriously expect me to care or take that in consideration, I’m like “wow it’s like we’re asking people to boss us around.”
Because I’m not Muslim. I don’t give a shit that the Quran says this or that. Europe is my land, this is my home, this is the place I live in, and no rule in none of our laws says that people aren’t allowed to draw religious figures. Those are MUSLIM rules, not Christian or Atheist rules. Our laws are more or less atheist and they are not dictated by religion. The law from the Old Testament does not apply to European laws. This is MY home, these are MY brothers, and we are not submitted to those rules. Is that clear? You wanna respect every single rule in the Quran? Fine, you do that in your home, while you pay the taxes, have a honest job, and respect our culture like everyone else does when they immigrate to another country. Or, well, at least how cool people do when they move to another country. But I am not Muslim. And I’m sure a lot of people in the Hebdo offices were not Muslim either (however there were Muslim contributors and they also got gunned down). They operated under French law, not under the Quran’s rules. And that is what’s appalling to me: people on here are seriously saying that they shouldn’t have drawn some things because they are forbidden by the Quran???
Who the fuck cares? Nobody forced those two men to buy the Hebdo, not even to look at it. Nobody forced them to take it seriously. Nobody forced them to join terroristic cells. Nobody forced them to grab weapons and shoot at people because they felt offended. They did that by themselves, following skewed, terroristic and supremacist ideals. That is literally all. That is literally what happened. And I refuse to let people say shit like “they sort of brought it on themselves”, because the law forbids murder here in Europe. Under no circumstance murder is legal. Not even for policemen, not if they don’t absolutely need to.
All I know, anyway, is that I will not let anyone badmouth artists that simply used humor to criticize reality, not when us, as countries, already censor ourselves so much to coddle others.
And by the way, there was nothing racist about the Hebdo. There was no islamophobia. If you’re gonna call Islamophobia on them, then your should also call racismphobia (since they consistently called out racism a lot), christianophobia, jewphobia, everythingphobia, because they target everything and everyone with no exception. Also, they are an extreme left wing publication. If you had bothered to research your shit and think about it before saying shit like “they deserved it”, we wouldn’t need tags like #JeSuisCharlie, and we wouldn’t be pissed.
Besides, right now the two brothers are holding women with children as hostages, and have made it adamant that they don’t care about dying, and they have written rap songs with misogynistic contents. Do you think they would give a shit about killing everybody they’re with before dying? Do you think this is about religion only?
And let me make it clear: just as I condemn terrorism I also condemn backlash against innocent Muslims. I condemn violence of all sorts. Being supportive of Charlie Hebdo and what it stands for, being supportive of France and being sad for journalists and cartoonists and policemen (among whom was a Muslim, yes) who died in horrible ways for something that should be a safe and protected right in our countries, that doesn’t mean I approve of violence against the Muslim community in Paris, which, by the way, is huge. I’ve seen Paris. It’s energetic, not really romantic, not to me, but very fierce. I wasn’t really impressed by the feel it had, but I’ve seen manifestations happen in a quiet day and I’m sure France is the most proud country I’ve seen since I was allowed to travel outside of my country. And let me tell you, I think these guys knew exactly that they were going to hit an extremely sensitive nerve in Europe. I think that was their plan. But I don’t think they knew they would trigger a manhunt the dimensions of which I’ve never heard of in my life. The army, the police, all forces have been unleashed to find these two monsters and secure them to justice.
In this moment I’m proud to be European, and I’m sending all my most sincere wishes for balance and happiness to my French brothers and sisters. It sounds sappy, but I hope things are going to turn out well, that we’re going to teach a fundamental lesson to these people: we don’t accept to be stepped on, or silenced.
I’m so angry over the lack of interest of tumblr in the situation that’s going on in France. When Ferguson happened, we were all with you. When the tragedy in Mexico happened, we all prayed for the victims. When the hostages in Australia were taken, we were all reblogging posts and hoping for people to stay safe.
Where is the same unity towards France? Where is the same unity towards Europe? Because you googled Charlie and came across their caricatures that might offend you (caricatures that you don’t understand coming from a magazine you only heard about yesterday) you think it’s okay to close your eyes and ignore the situation? Or even better, mock the magazine and base your opinion on WRONG information?
Dear tumblr, in two days you showed me what an incredible piece of hypocrite trash you can actually be. Because something doesn’t tickle your ‘social justice’ senses then it must be ignored or heavily criticized.
Fifteen people died, not just the editors of Charlie Hebdo, and most fear it’s only the beginning. This has nothing to do with Muslims and no one in their right mind will believe those terrorists were protecting Islam. This is about radicalism and people dying for their opinions. You might not agree with said opinions but here’s the important thing, you’re alive to debate about it. They’re not, their lives were taken away from them. The fact that you choose to turn a blind eye or make posts like “Well I’m not saying they deserved to die but-” shows me that if the bomb doesn’t fall in your backyard then you don’t give a shit.
it is 16 thousand years into the future. advanced sentient life forms land on a seemingly deserted planet. everywhere is dusty ruins as the life forms search for any record of what the former inhabitants may have looked like. they stumble across an old computer device and after tinkering with it, they get it running. they search it’s database and pull up a file titled “me”. they leave the planet, fearing this terrifying creature may still roam it.
I CANT STOP WATCHING THIS
