I have an easy time imagining the general outline and plot of a story but when I have to actually write a scene my brain freezes up. How can I stop that from happening and actually make something good?

Sorry I took a bit to answer this, I've been working my butt off on a few projects this week! I would need to know more about your situation to give specific advice, but usually this comes from a few places. 1. You've planned too much. Some writers thrive with a really detailed outline and some prefer to make up everything as they go. However most writers fall somewhere in the middle. They need a general idea and a few scenes to get started, but too much planning makes them stagnate. If you're struggling it might be because you've over-plotted and now you're bored with your idea. Why should you write it when you already know what's going to happen? In this case, I recommend tossing out portions of what you've planned. Maybe you'll keep the world but write about new characters. Maybe you'll keep the characters but give them different goals or priorities. Just something to make what's important in the story novel to you again. 2. You don't think your writing is good enough. Do you find that every time you start to put your amazing story into words it feels stilted? Amateurish? Awkward or contrived? That's extremely common and is usually just because you're being too hard on your first draft. I give this advice a lot because it's very true: you have to be willing to write a shitty first draft. When you start a story it's all potential and grand vibes. You need time to find tangible footing. Who are these characters, really? What's important in this environment? What tone do you want to give it all? It can take a full first draft to even properly figure out what your book is about, especially with original writing. Give yourself grace and follow any story path that lets you keep writing. You'll figure it out on the way. Maybe you'll write some cringy stuff as you go, but it's much easier to edit that out later than to never write it in the first place. 3. You're starting in the wrong place. This is related to the need to write a shitty first draft. If the place your paralyzed is at the very beginning, then there's a good chance that you don't know your story as well as you think just yet. And that's fine! You don't have to do this any particular way. Part of "shitty" writing can be writing in a completely ridiculous order! Write characters falling in love before they meet! Write that brutal betrayal before you know why they would even do that! Describe the mysterious ritual before you decide what it's for! Again, just follow whatever path keeps you writing. You can bring the pieces together in a full picture later. The most important part is always to do what gets you excited and makes you actual write. I hope that helps!
