Again, we see their closeness be so much more vibrant AFTER the last confrontation with Kikyo.

The fear of losing Kagome is so much more potent, and the slow churning idea that Kagome is only safe WITH HIM is more and more cemented in his head. Because he'd just left her with Kohaku who'd nearly killed her, and HE was the one who did it.
