Hey there, what do you use to make gifs? I come across your work a lot. I like looking at gifs from stuff I’ve watched, so I appreciate you 🙏🏽

I got into making GIFs for the same reason as you; I'd go online (usually Tumblr) to try and find GIFs from stuff I watched. Sometimes, I wouldn't find what I wanted, so I started to make my own. Now, I have the ability to create GIFs whenever I watch/play something and want to share moments from it with others.

There are a lot of ways to make GIFs. My process is open source, and you can find the code here: https://ailuridae.io/git/amber/video-to-gif. My script leverages two underlying technologies: ffmpeg and gifski. I haven't found a technology that's better at palette mapping than gifski. I used to only use ffmpeg to create GIFs, but I found that its palette generation strategy would drop colors entirely if there was too much going on. I want my GIFs to look as much as the original video as possible, which eventually led me to gifski.

Honestly, you can probably get away with just using gifski, and the developers even provide a GUI for converting videos to GIFs on Windows and macOS: https://gif.ski. My custom script uses ffmpeg to split video files into images, which are then piped to gifski to generate the actual GIF. I prefer this because it allows me to convert videos in bulk, something the gifski GUI doesn't support. I'll create 30–40 short clips and feed them to the script, which will output GIF versions of the videos in the same directory. Once that's done, it's just tweaking the framerate and quality dials on individual GIFs until they meet Tumblr's required specs.
