The California Condor was once a frequent sight at San Diego beaches, but was brought near to extinction by over-hunting, poisoning from litter, and government oversight committees after a crash revealed technical problems with their beaks.
Seen here in 1979, this Condor is hovering just offshore in hopes of spotting food, perhaps a picnic or small child. Condors are making a slow but steady return owing to anti-pollution efforts, and the willingness of Californians to feed them their young.
Top: in Donkey Kong Bananza, the elephants in the Tempest Layer are a community of weather forecasters. While at first this appears to be simply a deliberately odd combination, similarly to the zebra ice cream makers or snake sculptors found elsewhere in the game, this may actually be based on a real-world scientific fact about elephants.
Bottom: it was long suspected and finally confirmed in a 2014 study that, using a combination of not yet understood subtle signs in the environment, elephants are able to predict rainfall from 150 miles away and migrate towards it to increase chances of finding food and water. It is theorized that the mechanism of their detection involves their acute hearing and an ability to sense atmospheric pressure changes.
Whether this connection is deliberate or merely a remarkable coincidence is unknown.

Unintentional Arthur Recap: this episode in my africa is the shittiest one so far (Season 14, Episode 9 Part 2)
here is my unofficial recap of this episode:
so brain’s cousin Cheikh is from Dakar, Senegal and he is either visiting or being shipped off to america
he goes to d.w.’s preschool and she jumps up obnoxiously and basically does some exposition where she explains everything i just said
then she gives him a picture and tells Chiekh that is him on the hippo bus going to school in a volcano while lions in the coconut trees watch
Cheikh tells her Africa is nothing like that and he actually lives in a city that is way bigger than Elwood City so she can fuck off
The Tibble twins make fun of her for being racist stupid. D.W. vows to learn about Africa.
I need to say right here that Cheikh is surprsingly articulate and well informed about Africa despite being only four years old. Maybe his parents decided the best way to arm him against racist Americans was to make him memorize all these facts about Africa.
so D.W. tries to research Africa but she can’t read so she goes to the Brain and he suggests making up a song about Africa
They sing the original song “In My Africa” which describes all the 54 countries of Africa with a little fact about each one. No, they do not mention apartheid when they get to South Africa.
They sing it for Cheikh and he suggests they sing about African food and he makes up a verse on the spot.
Then they decide to perform it for the preschool and D.W. is afraid of being teased again but I don’t give a fuck at this point. They’re just trying to add a plot to this episode. Look, just put this song in the “And Word From Us Kids” segment. God, this is like an episode of Glee where the songs are chosen and the plot has to be worked around it and it’s basically a shitty episode like the Lady Gaga tribute and the Britney Spears tribute and how the Britney Spears tribute episode: Part 2 this season will be.

Anyway, they sing the song and everyone loves it.
Then this new kid Keith from Kalamazoo, Michigan comes in and D.W. volunteers to learn all about it.
Grade: F. I’d give it an F plus but I think that’s technically a good thing. Oh hang on, I changed my mind: this is an F minus minus minus. This is THE worst episode of Arthur. This is absolute tripe.
I would have liked this song if they just played it in the “And Now A Word From Us Kids” but this feels like the writers had to trot out this thing for a grant. It feels forced and condescending and it’s just bull.
Rating: 0% intense. No, -100% intense. This is utter bullshit.
This episode has exactly one (1) saving grace: It's how I first learned about the cool pink lake in Senegal.
