Far From Amenity || Kai & Kevin
Kevin never understood why there were some people who were just so reserved. He loved being openly friendly and social in certain settings. It made things less awkward and he liked making people feel comfortable. Granted that his type of comfort was uncomfortable towards certain people; majority being just women. There was never a moment where he wouldn’t call a female out on her shit. If someone in his group of friends were to complain that a guy had checked them out inappropriately he’d proclaim, ‘if you weren’t wearing the lowest V-neck dress for the world to check out your rack they wouldn’t be looking.’
He was a loud one and everyone knew when he would arrive in a room. Kevin just liked being the center of attention. This boy, who he now learned name was Kai, appeared to be slightly nervous towards those who he didn’t know. He wasn’t as outgoing as Kevin was, or perhaps he is outgoing, but he needed to feel comfortable talking. Either way, Kevin wanted to talk to the attractive male, and when he finally was able to get him to talk things were going smoothly.
Kevin even scored himself a little date. In his mind he heard date. He also heard the boy ask him what he was in for. What a way to kill the mood. He wasn’t about to tell Kai all there was about him…then again..it was the reason why he’s here in the first place. Mommy issues.
"Right, ya, about that. I guess I can’t go around this asylum tip-toeing behind my reasons for being here..I killed my mom and sister. You can go ahead and say I have family problems, but, I’m trying to work on it. Going to this place means I get help and I get to have a fucking amazing ass bed. The beds in prison are not comfortable. I’m use to sharing a room with a dude, but at least here, the beds will make me smile." He grinned. "What about you, man? What are you in for?" He followed Kai through the magnificent manor and whistled in amazement. "Damn. This place is like a resort for the crazies."
The aurora around this guy felt comfortable and not at all forced -well, only slightly, but that was mostly because Kai wasn't really used to conversation. Regardless, the air around him felt natural that Kai almost forgot this was their first time meeting. Befriending this guy would probably be a smart move on his part. He seemed like the kind that would call others out on their shit and keep things interesting.
Kai could sense a bit of hesitance after asking him about his reasons for staying at the manor. Maybe it was a bit too soon to ask, but it was too late to take it back now. Clearly his social skills needed a bit of work here and there. He listened quietly, softly smiling at the part about killing his mother and sister. It wasn't that their death was humorous, it was just that Kai felt relieved knowing he wasn't the only one around here with -what he called 'family issues'. He felt like he could relate to the guy and made a mental note to himself to actually keep in touch with this one.
"I killed my father. So, I guess you could say I suffer from family issues too, but you know what they say, great minds think alike." He let out a small chuckle, barely audible to the other before continuing. "Yeah, the beds in prison sucked. I'm a tall guy, so my legs draped off at the end. I'm also pretty sure my mattress was made of stone." To be honest, Kai had been expecting a similar setting before arriving, but clearly he was wrong. The entrance was already much nicer than any part of prison ever was.
Maybe it was just an illusion thing to make people feel like this wasn't a bad place. Like maybe past the entrance and into the actual institute was where it all fell apart. There would be plain, white walls and faulty light bulbs and any other cliche about asylums that played in movies.
He could feel the effects of not taking his adhd pills start to kick in. He tended to get more social without them and it ruined his reserved imaged, but it wasn't a bad thing at the moment. He stood up after packing his book back into his bag and began a small stride towards a hallway. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he didn't doubt he wouldn't end up somewhere interesting. "I know, right? I'm not sure how I ended up placed in this rich people place, but I'm not complaining."
Far From Amenity || Kai & Dylan
"it’s nice to meet you, Kai. Is that short for something? Kaito, Kailer— Sorry; I’m rambling. No, I’m not on a ‘happy drug’; I just find it hard to let myself get down around here." He gave a small shrug, acting as though his happy attitude was fairly normal. "Besides, if my medication were doing this, I’m sure a lot of people would want to get their hands on it."
He wasn’t sure whether to sit or remain standing, but chose to do the latter, if only for the fact that the nearest chair would lead to their conversation being shouted across the hall. The silence weighed heavily upon him, and he was about to speak to try to fill it, but a question was posed to him instead. Even if it wasn’t one he knew the answer to straight away, it was better than nothing. Anything was better than silence.
Dylan shook his head to indicate that he did not know such a thing, absentmindedly stroking the spine of his book. “I’ve got no idea, honestly. You should probably drop your stuff off in your room, though - and maybe get rid of any drawing stuff you’ve got. They don’t trust us with pens and pencils around here, and if you’re caught - well, you might get ISO. Trust me when I tell you that it’s not a friendly place. Better than prison, I suppose, but it’s no five-star hotel.”
While he’d never stayed in a hotel in his life, he knew the reference he’d made. The only question was whether or not Kai would know it. If the stranger did not, in fact, understand it, things might fall back into awkward silence.
"By what you said, I’m assuming you didn’t get here long ago. I’d love to show you to the dorms, but — well, I’m terrible at directions. I can describe to you how to get there, but if you try to get me to lead you, we’ll both be hopelessly lost." Being hopelessly lost in a big manor with this guy didn’t seem like a bad idea, honestly. The nineteen year old had high hopes for his friendship with this guy.
To Kai's astonishment, the other boy had somehow guessed his full name. It wasn't a common one, that's for sure, so it felt refreshing to him. "Yeah, it's short for Kaito; good guess. Most people never really question it."
The talk of medication suddenly brought him to his pills. It had been a few days since he had last taken his ADHD meds since his confinement didn't really allow him. He wasn't worried though, he often skipped a few days -months even, and he was just fine. Apart from the sudden bursts of energy and impulses, he figured he'd be alright. "I guess so. If this place is really the downer that I think it is; it seems I wont be needing to take my calming meds."
With his pencil twirling in his hand, his eyes glanced between his drawing and Dylan's face. Where were the rooms anyway? It was something he'd been wanting to check out since he got there. He'd envisioned cold linoleum covering the floors, a narrow spring bed that made his feet cast over because it was so small, and a tiny window with bars on the outside that made it impossible to escape.
Looking around, it didn't seem like that would be the case around here. Everything was decorated at it's finest that for a second Kai had forgotten it was a place full of psychos. He abruptly stopped his pencil as his eyes shot up at Dylan, "are you fucking serious?" He picked up his bag, shoving his writing utensils into the inside pocket for safekeeping. This will have to do for now, he thought. "Thanks for the warning."
Kai willingly could admit he only listened to half of what the other boy had said. His mind was too busy working up a way to be able to keep his stuff. He needed something that could keep him anchored since they already took up his favorite possessions. "You could still show me what you know, right? I doubt you're that much of an idiot to get so easily lost. I just want to get to my room and unpack this bag, or something."
Far From Amenity || Kai & Kevin
Kevin was purposely staring at the Asian looking man who had entered the asylum shortly after he had been guided by the men in blue. He was lounging and waiting to become processed; fucking bull. The usual waiting time would probably take an hour and he didn’t have anything to do but sit and watch the man drawing. Sketching really did seem like such a great way to waste time. He was quite the artist himself. In high school, they didn’t appreciate his taste for art, and would confiscate it a certain number of times. Oh, those phone calls home were great, because the drawings, or doodles, he’d think about in class were female students dying. It was just something to do because he was bored, damn, don’t have to take things so literally.
He pushed himself away from the wall he was leaning on and walked closer towards the Asian. He could hear him mutter some foul language and he waggled his finger in his direction. “No, no sir. I speak fluently in French and I’m pretty sure that is not how you say it. You could say va te faire foutre, trouduc. Just a fancy way to say fuck off, asshole.” He took the seat next to the Asian boy and extended his hand for him to shake. “Kevin. You were guided here by the wonderful police force, as was I, and you are?” He asked curiously.
Kevin supposed this would be the first patient he would be meeting. He was thankful. He was extremely satisfied that the first person he laid eyes on was a man and not female. Perhaps, this place, would be a decent house to live at. He would finally have a brother to room with and a whole floor that was just for men. He knew where he’d be spending his time.
Kai was slightly taken aback by the other’s sudden approach. He was never one to really engage in conversation with others, except for basic greeting, but this guy seemed like a talker. A part of him was almost tempted to speak to him in his native tongue and pretend to not know a word of English, but that wouldn’t pan out since he obviously heard him curse.
“Kai”, he said simply before turning back to his sketch and tearing out the page because of his lack of satisfaction with it. From the corner of his eye, Kai caught a glance of Kevin’s hand out towards him and turned his attention back to the other. He eyed him carefully, debating in is mind whether the guy was harmless or not.
“Yeah, being escorted in isn’t much fun,” he continued as he took his hand and shook it.
He wasn’t familiar with the way things ran around here, but he figured if you had to be brought in by police, then you must be pretty fucked up. “So, what’s wrong with you? Why are you in here?” He asked bluntly –it’s not like he wouldn’t find out eventually anyway, so might as well get the whole thing out in the open, right?
He grew impatient from waiting for the nurses to get everything situated. He honestly just wanted to get familiar with the place and everything as soon as possible. "Do you know how long this thing is going to take?" He questioned as his foot impatiently tapped on the linoleum flooring.
"Want to look around? Nothing can get better than two new guys getting lost in this place, am I right?" He questioned as a mischievous smile crept onto his lips.
Far From Amenity || Kai & Jude
Jude had been sitting in the antechamber for hours, hunched over in one of the chairs daydreaming as he always did. Time flew by when he was in his dream state and he’d find his body sore and his mind hazy whenever he awoke from one of his reveries.
Today, he imagined himself at the zoo with his mother. Her favorite exhibit had always been the polar bears, so it’d become his favorite, too. In his dream, they were sitting on the bench opposite the exhibit. His hand was tucked in a bag of popcorn and his mother was sipping on a diet coke.
"Too bad your father couldn’t be here with us, hm?" his mother mused as she pried the popcorn from his hands. She didn’t like when he gorged himself on junk food. She was worried about her little boy becoming pudgy and believed it wouldn’t look good in press photos.
He pulled the bag back onto his lap and shoved a handful of kernels into his mouth. “Doesn’t matter. I’m havin’ fun. Aren’t you?”
She nodded her head ever-so-slightly, her blonde curls bouncing on her shoulders at her movement. “I suppose so. I’m just sad that it’ll have to end soon.”
His heart sank. “It doesn’t have to end soon. We can sit here for as long as we want. You can stay with me.”
His mother heaved a sigh and rose from her seat. “You know I can’t. You have to wake up.” Time slowed as she walked away, her white dress fluttering in the breeze.
And then he was awake—discombobulated as he stirred in his chair. He didn’t know how much time had passed since he’d first settled down here, but it must have been mid-day already. Jude turned to the boy a few seats over, eyeing him warily. He looked nice enough, so he supposed it wouldn’t hurt to ask him a question.
Jude rose from his seat and strode over, his shoulders back and his chin raised like he’d been taught by his father. First impressions were important and he was determined to make a good one. “Hey,” he said. “What time is it? I have a meeting with my doctor at four and she’ll kill me if I’m late.”
Kai sat staring blankly at his sketchbook as the pencil rotated in his nimble fingers. The drawing utensil flying out of his hand when another voice suddenly startled him. He watched as the pencil rolled off towards the other’s feet and let his eyes trail upwards towards the voice’s face. “The time?” He asked with an arched brow. It was a simple question, but it caught Kai off guard because it was not at all the first question he thought he would hear here.
He looked down to meet his bare wrist, suddenly remembering he didn’t bring a watch. Taking a second to mentally curse himself for forgetting such a thing, he looked back up at the guy and simply shrugged. “I can’t really help you there.”
His eyes went back to his book, shutting it and quickly shoving it into his bag. “If it helps at all, I just got here about twenty minutes ago and I remember the time in the car saying two-thirty.”
The accent in his words grew heavier when numbers spilled out his lips and Kai hated that. There was this weird factor about the entire ordeal that reminded him of his father, and comparing himself to that man was the last thing he wanted to do.
Quick flashbacks set in brain in a burst of color before settling with an old memory of when he was nine. His class was spending a week going over English greeting and numbers, so of course, Kai was eager to show off his skills to his parents and teach them a thing or two.
Snapping back to reality, Kai looked back up at him, surprised the other was still there after his abrupt spacing-offing. “Sorry, I was just thinking. Uh, you wouldn’t happen to know where I’m supposed to go if I’m new, right?”
Far From Amenity || Kai & Dylan
Someone new was coming. Dylan had finally figured out the warning signs - the fact that rooms were moved around a little, and some of the guards got a bit antsy. Having realized this, he’d gone down to the main hallway to wait for whomever was coming, a book in hand. While the librarians had been hesitant to let the pyromaniac check out a book, he’d convinced them that it was a good idea anyways. After all, he didn’t burn books.
He’d had to sit there for a good hour before finally seeing more activity, the guard watching the front door actually looking alert for once. The new arrival must’ve almost been there, which got him a bit excited. It was still another half hour before he saw any movement at the door itself, but now he didn’t mind - he’d gotten a bit distracted. Attempting to guess the gender, age, and disorder of whoever was being admitted was a bit difficult, especially when he knew nothing about them.
As soon as the new guy entered and sat down, Dylan stood, planning to leave. He looked interesting and all, but the nineteen year old had seen that quick scrounging for something. While he didn’t know what the stranger had been looking for, he was sure it was some sort of addiction thing. After all, he’d done the same thing for a few weeks while in jail, desperately hoping that no one had taken all of his lighters. He’d been hoping in vain, of course, but he’d at least tried.
Since the male was further away from the entrance than he’d been, Dylan had to walk towards him to exit. He didn’t realize he’d been staring at him until their eyes met, a deep blush rising up his cheeks. That was a bit embarrassing, but now he had to make it seem like he’d been planning to have some sort of conversation.
"Hey there; I’m Dylan," he greeted, vaguely wondering if the attractive new guy would think he was strange. The brunet had a cheerful look to him, despite his temporarily dulled emotional state, and some people - especially here - found that off-putting.
Kai kept his eyes down, his fingers twirling his pencil in circles as he thought of what else to add to his drawing. It was a dull sketch of a bridge that he had been hoping to make his own unique style, but his mind was too deep in uncomfort from being at the manor. He could hear the guy approaching closer and closer until Kai gave in and looked up at him again.
There was something about the boy’s face that reminded Kai of –not hope, exactly, but the cliché of always finding light in a dark place. The guy seemed surprisingly cheerful for being in a place like such. He took a moment to decipher whether his guy was just abnormally friendly and happy, or the crazy people he had hoped to avoid.
Offering him a small smile, Kai shut his sketchbook and tucked it into his bag. “I’m Kai, and are you on some sort of happy drug, or should I just avoid you completely?” He laughed, arching his brow at him before crossing his arms.
He eyed him once more, taking him in and really evaluating him. The shorter brunet seemed pretty normal. He carried a book in his hand, which showed he was civilized, in Kai’s opinion anyway. What would he know about civilized people? Making friends or having allies around here was something he suddenly found himself deeming necessary. He had no idea what kind of place this would turn out to be, and having someone to help him out or rely on felt like his only option.
“Uh, you don’t happen to know where I’m supposed to go, do you? They sort of just left me here without a word,” he added, trying to sound as friendly as possible – a foreign thing for Kai.
Far From Amenity || Kai & Aimi
Aimi was in the front lobby of the manor because she was turning in a request form to change doctors. She’d wanted to just turn it in at the infirmary like she thought they usually did, but the nurses directed her here. There was on guard looking at her - not glaring, really, but still watching to make sure she wasn’t about to try and make a run for the door. Aimi’s elbows were pressing into the front desk, but she soon took them away because they bones were beginning to ache.
She turned away from the desk and twisted her arms around to take a struggled look at her elbows, which were red and maybe bruised. Aimi’d always been unusually easy to bruise, but every time that Beverly took her to the doctor, they assured them both that there was nothing wrong. Her thoughts left doctors and rubber gloves and focused on the person entering the manor with a guard. Her dark eyes followed the young man around as they scuffled him in. Aimi watched him search around in his bad, too, before finally picking out a sketchpad of some sort. That piqued her interest, other than the fact that he reminded her of her dad in the one photo she had of her parents. Perhaps this boy was also from Japan.
She made eye contact with him finally when he looked up. A shy smile grew on her lips and although he looked down and murmured something, Aimi began toward him anyway.
"Hi," She breathed. "I’m Aimi. I… like to paint. What are you drawing?" She asked meekly, not daring to look at the page that was in her lower peripheral vision. It would be rude. "What’s your name?"
In the distance, Kai could hear the girl’s soft steps making their way towards him. Blocking out the sound, he began to trace over the light pencil strokes to form the end of a sketched bridge. It was a small design he had started while on his way here and was suddenly too enthralled by it to quit. Architectural design was something he picked up at age fifteen when he moved to the states. The difference between American buildings and general structure, compared to Japan’s, were so noticeable that it left Kai itching to create his own unique style. The ironic part was that while half of him wanted to build the world, the other half prayed to watch it destruct in flames.
He paused for a second, hearing the girl introduce herself. Her name caught his attention immediately, recognizing its origin. Kai looked up at her, a faint smile decorating his lips before he let out a small breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
“Kaito, but I prefer just Kai,” he began before looking back down at his sketch. It wasn’t one of his best works, considering he was in a car for most of it. “Oh, uh, it’s just a sketch of a bridge I started before getting here,” he shrugged easily as he looked at her. He felt his cheeks go warm, slightly embarrassed by the rough sketch before him when she was an artist herself.
He turned back to his drawing, outlining it once more before beginning to shade the edges. He kept his eyes down, paying close attention to the detailing as he began to speak. “What kind of stuff do you paint, Aimi?”
Far From Amenity || Kai & ____
Kai entered through the main entrance of Stonebridge, an officer by his side pulling him in. Another was posted at the far wall with his gaze heavily on him. Pausing in his step, Kai squeezed his eyes closed and took a steadying breath. His stomach clenched anxiously, and his fingers flexed as if they were gripping something that wasn't there. The atmosphere was cold and dry, made bleak by the closed walls and the dust and dirt that has accumulated along the edges of the hard floor. It made the hairs on his arms stiffen, and an involuntary shudder crawl down his spine.
He wasn't crazy. He knew that. He just didn't understand why he had to be sent here. Anyone could start a fire or two in a day and not be considered crazy, right? This turn out was better than the latter, though. Getting sent to prison for the murder of his father didn't sound anything close to better than this hell hole.
He wondered who he'd meet here. He'd seen several asylum based films back in Japan and once he'd arrived in the states and neither looked pleasant. Will he be alright here? Will he wake up to some psycho trying to sacrifice him? Kai almost instantly decided that he didn't want to know.
There were a few other patients loitering around and Kai tried his best to avoid their eyes. If he tried hard enough, they probably wouldn't even notice him. The officers sat him on a chair and tossed him his belongings, his fingers subconsciously searching his bag for his tiny yellow friend. They had taken up all his lighters and matches a few days ago, but Kai found it impossible to kick the habit of having a spark on his fingers.
In there end, he settled for his sketchbook, his eyes still kept down to avoid contact. He knew he should have at least spoken to someone about where he should go, but he didn't care at this point. If he had to be somewhere or know something, they could come to him. Curiosity took the best of him and forced him to glance upwards, his eyes landing on another's before he suddenly looked back down. "Fuck," he muttered as he heard footsteps coming towards him.
