Other Facts:
-birth name was Bailey Tiffany McDowell, but legally became Nagisa Bailey Kobayashi on January 6th,1997, after Hikaru's father adopted her as his own child. Hikaru, Shiki, and Kyoya were adopted by Bailey's mom on the same day. Bailey's mom and Hikaru's father have a daughter together named Misaki, who was born on September 7th, 1993, almost a year after Bailey's mom started dating Hikaru's dad.
-lived in Japan from February 22nd 1997 to June 15th 2001. Started elementary school at the American School in Japan soon after.
-when she lived in Japan, she would just carpool with her mom and brothers, joined by her little sister later on, since her mom worked there.
-owns a lot of Japanese VHS tapes. One of the tapes contains the three banned Pokémon episodes from the show's early years, such as the infamous Electric Soldier Porygon episode. When they are able to, the Kobayashi's will have the Pokemon episodes transferred onto a DVD.
-owns a lot of Japan exclusive Pokémon cards, with Bailey's friends promising to send her and Hikaru more of these cards as they come out.
-Bailey's favorite Japanese bands or idol groups are SMAP, Morning Musume and its spinoff groups 3nin Matsuri and Melon Kinenbi, and KAT-TUN. As for Japanese singers, her favorites are Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro, Utada Hikaru, and Ai Kago of Morning Musume.
-she was subscribed to the magazines CoroCoro Comic, Nicola, and Pichi Lemon when she was living in Japan.
-tends to speak more Japanese than English, except when she's at school. She also knows some Irish Gaelic words, but says she doesn't have a reason to ever use them.
-still communicates with her friends in Japan via email, although she has to type the Japanese words out due to the fact she doesn't have a Japanese keyboard anymore.
The American version of the 1954 Godzilla film came out in 1956, while Godzilla 1985 (the American version of Return of Godzilla) came out in, well, 1985.
Maryellen could have seen Godzilla: King of the Monsters 1956 when it came out and Courtney could have seen Godzilla 1985 in theaters.
So I was in Goodwill a couple hours ago and what do I find? LINDSEY'S BOOK! Only sign of wear was a small pen mark on the cover and yes, I bought it. Hey, it was 2 bucks.
Sorry if I haven't been around a lot. My cat had a mass removed from his eyelid last month and it was Cancer. A rare one, too.
Thankfully, the Doctor got all of said Cancer, which is great. He started his kitty Chemo last week and has four more sessions, with his next one taking place in two weeks. Vet said 'Now that's a beautiful boy' when he saw my cat, which is pretty awesome.
Yes, I know I missed a bunch of birthdays for my OCs, I'll hopefully get around to that soon.
As someone who’s *very salty* that AG threw away the opportunity to give Maryellen a more severe disability, I’m very happy with these pages about polio in her new diary. I have a special interest in polio (that’s entirely Maryellen’s fault) and all of this is accurate to what I’ve researched.
Also, confirmation that Maryellen used to need crutches and/or leg braces?! I don’t think AG has ever mentioned her needing mobility aids after she had polio, not even for a short time.
It’s not unrealistic that she made a mostly full recovery. Kids with polio were given rigorous physical therapy to try to restore their movement and strength. It often worked. It turns out that these children’s brains were able to bypass their damaged nerves by rerouting their healthy nerves to control their muscles. I probably did a bad job of explaining that, but it’s part of the reason Post-Polio Syndrome can be so devastating for an individual. It’s when the weakness from polio shows up again later in life, and people who worked hard to regain function can have it the worst. Their bodies worked overtime to compensate the muscles that didn’t work anymore, and that over exertion of their muscles hurt their bodies over time.
I have a couple characters in my character Svetlana’s series that had Polio when they were younger. Her neighbors Howard and Franklin were very close to needing iron lungs and as they push 80 in the current day, they still feel pretty lousy even on good days.
She looks very nice in her kimono. I hope to get one for my dolls at some point. I have an off-brand Mandarin dress for my Blaire Oliveira doll (she's a Truly Me) and I have yet to put her in it.
