Waking up with a hand around his throat is not on the top of Steve’s list of good mornings.
The first instinct is to fight, his sleep-laden brain immediately firing off the panic receptors, but all those years in combat training kick in and he stills. He catches the vague outline of a stubbled face beneath the chaotic fall of brown hair.
The man is strong. Muscles are coiled tight, bunching under sweat-slick skin. Steve is confident he could turn the tables with a fair fight, but he’s not about to scare the man further.
“Who are you?” a deep grating voice rumbles above Steve, the panic so thick it’s almost tangible. “Where am I?”
The first chapter of Down We Go is now out! Follow Bucky and Sam to Evora, Portugal as they search for information on the Flag Smashers and encounter something far more sinister instead.

1. Revenge. Bucky is attacked because of his pardon.
2. Bucky sacrifices himself to save Sam.
3. Allergic reaction and the serum doesn't help.
4. Bucky is poisoned. Then he and Sam go on a mission and shit hits the fan.
5. Car goes off a cliff and Bucky is seriously injured.
6. Bucky and Sam are lured into a trap and Bucky is hit with a poisonous agent.
7. Bucky's metal arm gets damaged.
8. Bucky is triggered and has a panic attack.
9. After Latvia, John Walker comes looking for the shield and goes after Bucky.
10. Bucky is attacked by a bear.
11. Hostage situation. Bucky gets seriously injured and the wound gets infected.
12. Remote mission. Bucky suffers through broken bone(s).
13. Plane is shot down in the wilderness. Ground team comes to finish the job and takes Sam down. Bucky goes berserk and ends up with psychological trauma.
14. Sam and Bucky are captured and forced to compete in cage fighting, Gladiator style.
15. Bucky is captured and the capture results in heavy trauma that he and Sam talk about.
16. Bucky is seriously injured and admitted to the hospital. He has an episode (flashback) and needs help coming back to the present.
17. Set in the late 30's. Bucky is stabbed while trying to help Steve in a fight.
18. CA:FA: After Steve rescues Bucky from the factory, Steve comforts Bucky after he has an emotional breakdown from all that's happened.
19. Bucky has a nightmare in front of Sam.
20. Bucky hides an injury.
21. Sarah's in-laws don't trust Bucky and make him feel unwanted. He gets triggered and has terrible nightmares.
22. The WS killed Riley and Sam doesn't take the news well. It causes Bucky to spiral.
23. Bucky has a full-blown panic attack/fear of needles.
24. John Walker pisses off the Flag Smashers. Bucky pays the price.

After James Barnes moves in with his Uncle following a tragic accident with his parents he finds his freedoms being stripped away one by one. No more having friends come over or leaving to go out whenever he’d like. As he tests his Uncle’s patience he starts to be watched by Rumlow.
One night Steve sneaks over to study for an upcoming college test when Rumlow decides to make his rounds and check on Bucky. Bucky is quick to shove Steve in the closet in an attempt to keep his sickly friend safe. The plan backfires when Rumlow takes the opportunity to use Bucky as he sees fit.
"Good boy," Rumlow leans down and croons the words next to his ear.
Bucky shivers as the man's hot breath ghosts along his cheek. He stays silent though, and doesn't give Rumlow the meek thanks that he's expecting.
"I said," fingers grip Bucky's chin in a vice-like grip, "good boy."
There's a muffled sound from the closet and Bucky stares at it.
"F-fuck you."
The grip tightens and Bucky knows that his face is going to bruise. Which is odd because Rumlow has always been careful to keep the bruises to areas that can easily be covered. His normal etiquette seems to be completely out the window this time though and Bucky grunts as he's dragged from the bed by his jaw.
His chest hits the ground hard and he flinches as old bruises flare in protest. Bucky winces as his knees follow with a dull crack and tries to push himself upright. Rumlow's fingers dig into his jaw impossibly tighter at the act of self preservation and alarm bells echo through his head.
Fuck. He shouldn't have done that. He's not supposed to do anything without permission he-
His head whips to the side as Rumlow slams a fist against his cheekbone. Bucky inhales sharply and rights himself only for a boot to acquaint itself with the fleshy part of his side. He folds in towards the blow and an arm quickly wraps around his waist in an attempt to protect it.
The next blow bends him backwards, well placed to the sternum. Bucky doesn't get the chance to recover before Rumlow pounces and straddles his hips. There's nothing sexual about it this time though as the man methodically places punches to vulnerable areas.
It feels like his spine is going to break with the way his body is bent so unnaturally and everything screams at the stretch. His thighs are fucking burning and his ass is an inferno as his feet dig into his cheeks.
Bucky needs it to stop, he's not going to be able to move after this if Rumlow keeps it up for much longer. Something twitches against his stomach and he doesn't have to look to know that Rumlow is already starting to perk up.
"I'm sorry!" The apology is a breathy whimper as he attempts to shift.
Relief, God, he just needs a moment to regain control of himself. The apology does nothing to soothe the monster astride him. Something swells in his chest, an ugly and wretched thing.
Guilt? It could be.
His head rolls to the side and he fixates on the chair that's blocking the closet. He can't help but wonder if Steve thinks he's a coward for not fighting back.
Bucky raises his left arm to block a blow and Rumlow practically roars at the defiance. He doesn't have time to pull his arm away before Rumlow grabs it and twists it angrily.
"You're usually so well behaved sweetheart." Rumlow is caressing his forearm now.
ooh I know we’ve talked about it before, but I’m still dying to hear more about HYDRA’s guide to appendectomies!!
Hmmm, I honestly don't have much of this one written down in the doc despite having spent quite a bit of time mulling it over. Appendicitis is one of my absolute favorite forms of whump; especially when the necessary aid is either unavailable or brutally administered.
Unfortunately for Bucky both things will happen to him in this fic. Eventually. >.<
While with Steve and the Howlies a mission goes incredibly wrong when Bucky and Steve end up being captured by HYDRA. For Bucky, he supposes this is just the continuation of his horrible morning and the persistent ache that has developed in his abdomen. As his condition worsens drastically HYDRA uses the opportunity to test the limits of the serum he was given in Azzano.
Steve was a goddamn idiot, Bucky decided as his face was pressed into the snow.He distinctly remembered telling his friend to stay where he was, that there was nothing the super soldier could do to help him.
The nearly panicked shouting around him told him that Steve hadn't listened though. Boots crunched near his head as their owner spun around and something cold was pressed into the base of his skull.
A gun, he realized bitterly.
"Wir werden ihn töten!" (We will kill him!)
A knee centered itself on the middle of his back and he grunted softly with the discomfort. That annoying ache in his gut reminded him of its presence and his mouth twisted into a frown.
His cheek was starting to go numb from being pressed against the ground. There was a brief moment of relief when the knee left his back before a hand wrapped itself in his hair.
Bucky felt his back arch unnaturally as the fingers wrenched his head back. There was a blur of the snow-softened forest, a vivid flash of blue…
Steve.
The blue was Steve. If the circumstances were different he'd be impressed with how quickly the punk had reached him.
"Thought I said to not bother." The words were bitter as they left him.
He could barely hear the huff of disbelief over the orders that were being shouted.
