Wouldn’t ordinarily do two music posts in one day but I’ve just noticed today is the twenty-eighth anniversary of the debut of THE PERFECT KISS. Or as it was at that first public performance at the Royal Festival Hall, in London: I’ve Got A Cock Like The M1.

New Order released Low-life in 1985. A year earlier and a much more raw version of TPK is being blasted out through amplifiers across various select UK venues. The music’s all there, though through a notably different set of sequencers, and the eventual story of watching a best friend walk to an inevitable self-destruction is pointedly absent, the final lyrics not yet formulated. Instead Barney sings a selection of seemingly arbitrary rhymes, couplets and scatologies. So you get this. It is outstanding, however divorced from the finished article; it just DOES something.

Can you imagine having been there? In the RFH, London, England, May 14th 1984? This is proto-The Perfect Kiss, this is I’ve Got A Cock Like The M1.
