A few weeks ago one of my peers applied for a local job at the Donut Shop here in Buckhannon. She filled out her application and patiently waited to hear back. After waiting awhile with no word, she took the action to follow up on her application to see if the position had been filled/what had happened to her application. Management responded with a shocking statement: her application was cast aside because they do not hire women as bakers...... THEY DON’T HIRE WOMEN AS BAKERS. THEY DON’T HIRE WOMEN. Taken aback but also curious to this reasoning- she asked why. Their answer- 1. Women can’t lift heavy things (50 lb. bags of flour) and 2. A woman’s menstration will affect the way the yeast in the bread rises.... I don’t know about you guys but PERSONALLY- I can lift way over 50 lbs (even though I’m a weak and frail little woman) and when I, my mom, my grandma, my great-grandma have baked during our periods (DECADES OF BAKING)- our sweets turn out just fine!!! In fact- a woman’s time of the month does not affect the way yeast rises AT ALL!!! I am SO unbelievably proud of this young lady for not allowing this rejection to defeat her- instead- she mobilized to show the community what the shop was really all about. I am so blessed to have peers and professors who stand up for what is right in this world.
