Consent - enthusiastic, freely given, informed, on-going, withdrawable/reversible agreement/permission - is absolutely everything in any human engagement but especially in BDSM. And without a safeword - the withdrawable/reversible portion of the consent equation - consent cannot be properly given or obtained by either the dominant or submissive party.
In other words, without the ability *for everyone involved* to immediately - and without *any* possibility of being misunderstood - call a halt to whatever activity/engagement is underway ie: withdraw consent, one cannot give or receive full consent.
