It has been a difficult few weeks. I feel writing this may be the only way to keep my own sanity intact. It is no simple matter, changing one's allegiance. I have been putting my affairs in order, silently severing ties, moving chess pieces in the shadows. It feels... dirty somehow. I no longer feel like myself, but rather a shell being used to further an agenda. I understand it is necessary in order to figure out what The Light is planning, but I cannot help but wonder if there might have been another way. Regardless of whether there could have been another way or not, our plan has already been set in motion, there is no turning back now. I will do what I must, no matter how much it may pain me... or my friends.
Kaldur had dreaded his return to Atlantis, not only because of the pain it would bring him, but also because of the pain he knew he would shortly bring others. While he may be there publicly for the funeral of the woman he loved more than any other, Tula; secretly he was there to retrieve files on his father, Black Manta, for Nightwing. He wasn't sure yet what Nightwing needed the files for, but if their plan was to work, Kaldur had to trust him without question. It would be no easy task, leaving the funeral unnoticed to go to the archives, much less accessing the restricted section.
Like Garth next to him, when the fanfare started, Kaldur looked to the stage. There, in the most regal atire he had ever seen her wear, the Queen glided to the podium. She smiled to the crowd and nodded in the direciton of Kaldur and Garth.
"Friends, family, and loved ones," she began, "we are joined together today to show our love for Tula. She was a brave, kind hearted person, who's death exemplified those qualities. If it were not for her sacrifice, I may not be here today, Ocean Master may have taken my life. Beyond her selflessness beneath the water, she also devoted herself to helping the people on the surface, following in my Kaldur'ahm's footsteps, or my husband's before him." Queen Mera paused while she took a moment to compose herself. "Tula was like to a daughter to me in many ways. During her time at the Conservatory, she and I grew close. She was gifted in the arcane arts, her potential surpassing what mine was at her age, and I took her under my wing. She confided in me many things, just as I confided in her. I am sure that she has touched many of your hearts. Tula, should Poseidon allow you to hear one thing today, let it be that that all of Atlantis feels your absence."
A surge of applause and the sounds of people sobbing could be heard as a coffin drawn by several sea turtles made it's way to the stage. The coffin, which was made of magic, was seethrough. Inside you could see Tula's body, wounds healed, dressed in formal gown. The sight was almost too much for Kaldur to bear. Queen Mera stepped forward once again to speak, "At this time, I would ask Garth and Kaldur'Ahm, two of Tula's closest friends, who were with her on the day she died, to speak."
Kaldur's heart dropped into the pit of his stomach. He knew this was coming, he had even prepared a speech, but in the moment, he felt lost. While Kaldur sat there stunned, Garth stood up and put a hand onto Kaldur's shoulder. The weight of his friend's hand shook Kaldur to his senses. He wasn't going through this alone, he had Garth there with him. Kaldur stood up and walked with his friend to the podium.
Garth let Kaldur walk in front, indicating that he wanted Kaldur to speak first. Kaldur turned to face the crowd and seeing the number of people, grabbed the podium to steady his nerves. "I recognize many of the faces I see before me today. First, I would like to thank you for coming. I could tell you of how Tula was one of the bravest people Iever had the honor of knowing and calling friend. I could tell you of her selflessness, how she always put others before herself. I could tell you of her beauty, both inside and out. I could tell you of all that and more, but I do not think that words would be able to capture the truth. I spent many hours trying to figure out what I would say today, and as I am up here, all of what I had prepared doesn't seem to be good enough. The truth is that Tula was one of my closest friends and I will feel this loss for the rest of my life." his voice dropped to an almost inaudible level, "I-I am sorry I was not able to save you my friend. I failed you."
Kaldur bowed his head and stepped back allowing Garth to speak. Garth's speech went by in a flash; Kaldur hardly heard a word as he was lost in his own mind, his guilt. He knew today would be difficult, but he didn't expect it to be this difficult already, as he knew the worst was yet to come. Applause brought Kaldur back to the present and he followed Garth off the stage, before turning to their seats, Kaldur whispered to his friend that he had to go to the restroom.
Kaldur made his way down the halls and when he was sure he was out of sight, he made his way to the archives as quickly as possible. He found a drape along the way and wrapped it around himself to conceal his identity. As he entered the archives, he was stopped by a guard. Kaldur acted quickly, knocking him out before he could be recognized. Accessing the restricted files would have been difficult under normal circumstances, but Nightwing had provided him with a virus that would unlock access to the restricted files. Kaldur uploaded the virus and stared at the progress bar.

Kaldur removed the USB device and slid it into a compartment on his belt. He carefully stepped over the unconscious guard, muttering his apologies. He quickly made his way back to the funeral
Kaldur had sat down in his seat just as Tula’s family was leaving the podium. Queen Mera took their place, and raised and arm asking for silence. “Thank you for being here today and listening as those closest to Tula shared their thoughts, their stories and their feelings. It’s time that we allow Tula to continue her journey with Poseidon.” The Queen closed her eyes and turned to face Tula’s casket. An eerie silence fell over the crowd as Queen Mera began moving her arms, commanding the tides and creating a current to carry Tula to the open ocean. “When the casket is raised into the current, it will lead Tula to the open ocean, where her journey will then be in Poseidon hands. May he grant her safe passage.”
Tula’s casket began to rise and got swept along with the current, marking the end of the ceremony. People could be heard clapping as they rose from their seats. Kaldur quickly made his way through the crowd, hoping to get away before anyone could stop him. He wouldn't be so lucky though, as Garth caught up to him and grabbed his arm.
"Why are you in such a hurry my friend?" Garth asked.
Kaldur refused to face his friend, "This has been more painful than I anticipated and the team has need of me on the surface." He hoped his friend wouldn't question his lie.
"I understand Kaldur. I may not like it, but I understand." Garth let go of Kaldur's arm. "Be safe and may Poseidon protect you."
Kaldur wordlessly swam away, heading for the Atlantis zeta tube. He plugged coordinates into the console and in the blink of an eye, was gone.

//imnotasidekick turned two today also. It’s a little weird thinking on how far I’ve come as an RPer. This was my first RP account, since then, I’ve been several different characters from CW, as well as characters for other DC groups, a character for an original group, and several indies. I appreciate all of who’ve followed me, on all my various blogs, especially those of who stuck with this one even when I had a huge hiatus.
