Who: @fireislandstarters​ Where: Floating obstacle course in the ocean

There were a million different things that people would describe Adriana as being, but one thing that she was sure everyone could agree on would be, competitive. Growing up as an only child, she wasn’t sure really where her competitiveness came from, but every tournament, every contest, every gym class, she had to win. As she got older, that need to win had only intensified, even it was a game of pool in a bar. Now, staring down the wet, inflatable slide in the middle of the inflatable obstacle course, the need to beat it was driving her mad. “Oh, come on!” She reached for the slippery ladder again, climbing a couple of steps before she slipped back down, only just managing to hold onto the structure to stop herself from falling off. 

Pulling herself back to standing, Adi held one hand up. “I’m sorry, this is my nemesis, I can’t get up, give me a second.” Looking at it again, Adi rolled her shoulders before trying once more and slipping back down once more. “Well, it’s your lucky day, I took ‘suns out, buns out’ too far and you lucky thing just get to wait and watch me try and get over this thing.” Glancing back, the girl shrugged once. “It’s your lucky day, sweetness. Any tips?”

How Kali found herself on the obstacle course in the first place was still unknown, even to the woman herself. She’d blame it on a combination of greasy foods, alcohol, and the warm sun beating down on her later, but now- now she was just waiting on the woman in front of her to make it up the ladder before she herself could continue and finally get off the floating course. She’d regretted her decision to give it a go almost instantly, but she’d already committed and now she wanted to see it through.

“Um...” Unsure of how to reply to Adriana, Kali simple chose to offer her assistance. “Do you maybe want a boost?”

If she’d had her way, Sasha would be at home, curled up on the couch, getting too warm under a blanket with the book she had bought on her daily walk yesterday. Although there were few, very few in fact, drawbacks to living with her best friend, this was one of them. Sasha’s intentions had been clear for the day but Skylar had been having none of it. Despite the girl’s fear and loathing of the ocean and most forms of water, she had been dressed, primped and pushed out the door.

She had no plans to go anywhere near the water today, so instead she sat and drank, moving from food stall to food stall and anywhere else that was on solid, dry land. “Excuse me, are you in line?” She glanced at the girl in front of her who was seemingly in her own world. “Cool, thanks.” For her, the music was a little too loud, but then everything did lately. “Do you know the band or something? Can I get the mac and cheese bites with a side of fries, thanks.” Turning her attention from the food truck owner to the girl. “It’s a bit much for me, I tend to like music to relax to, you know?”

There was a rush of embarrassment that warmed Kali’s body from the inside out, all seemingly pooling in her cheeks as she glanced down to the dock beneath her feet. Anything to avoid the other woman’s gaze and hating the instant feeling of shame that had washed over her. She hated burdening others and she knew, logically, it was an honest mistake but that didn’t stop her gaze from looking almost anywhere but Sasha. “I don’t, no.” She answered, eyes finally turning to look at Sasha, light timid smile on her features. “Yeah, I know what you mean. I listen to old records and play my keyboard to relax. Music has a way of soothing you, you know? But it can also be a rush... and these guys are good. I haven’t heard a base line like that in a long time.” Pausing her ramble, a sheepish smile overtook Kali’s lips. “What kind of music do you usually listen to?”

      He was a hundred percent sure at least two people had done a double take seeing him pass, rest assured not because he was necessarily dressed for Center Stage but because the by passer was in disbelief Sullivan was out and about enjoying the celebration. Not that it would be for long. Sully was just taking the walk to sight see, two of their bartenders doing a great job upkeeping one of several food boats set up by local vendors. 

One of the other setups had been singing it’s siren call to his stomach, luring him towards it until he’d come to a stop in the quick-paced line. A polite “I believe it’s your turn,” offered as the line moved forward. Shaking his head to dismiss their apology. “I think you’re supposed to be distracted by the music.” It was helping him at least, the way it mingled with laughter in the backdrop and the wafting sounds of people enjoying their afternoon. “Instead, maybe I can make a suggestion? Thin sliced roast beef, on a garlic roll, sautéed onion, with melted Munster and a dipping sauce… might change your life.”

“But as distracted as I can get?” She asked, small smile on her features as she poked fun at herself. “Sorry though, I really didn’t mean to hold up the line. I know how people can get when they’re hangry. I’ve seen those Snickers commercials.” Her nose crinkled slightly as her amused smile grew, though it quickly fell at the sight of the frustrated faces behind Sully. “I’m so sorry,” She apologized to the strangers, frown on her features as she motioned for them to move in front of her in the line. “You guys can go ahead, I don’t mean to hold up the line.” She offered the warmest smile she could muster in hopes to placate the situation as she’d never been good with confrontation. 

Her attention was turned back to the man in front of her when he began his food suggestion, true, warm smile returning to her features as her stomach rumbled quietly at the description. “That sounds... absolutely delicious. Like, my mouth is actually watering it sounds so good.” Chuckling softly, Kali raised a hand to rest atop her head, securing the hat that rested there in place as a strong gust of wind blew around them. “Is that what you’re getting?”

The lines were long, and they were slow. That was a given. But at the same time he’d expected it. Noah usually didn’t find himself at the town events, especially during the day, however, this time here he was, and trying to keep his regular personality at bay. Waiting in a line for what seemed like, far too long, when he got an explanation, all he could do was chuckle, “I’m honestly not surprised.” He said, seeing his rather loud, musical neighbour, “that’s very on brand for you.”

The voice was familiar and as Kali turned towards it, she instantly felt her cheeks heat up in flushed embarrassment at the sight of her neighbor. She’d made friends with his wife, the two women exchanging baked goods and sitting out on their decks together while sharing a glass of wine, but she still hadn’t quite figured Noah out yet. “Sorry.” She apologized once more, sheepish smile overtaking her features. “You can go ahead. I clearly don’t know what I want yet and I’d hate to hold you up. I already assault your ears with my keyboard, it’s the least I can do.”

          A bit on the shy side, Caria wasn’t fully known for speaking up but since the people behind her were groaning and beginning to sound their complaints she gently caught the attention of the woman in front of her. When the brunette was looked at she flushed a little too, partly out of embarrassment and also because pretty women always did that to her. “Sorry, I normally wouldn’t interrupt, it’s just —” Her thumb jutted to the line following behind them. “Big music fan, huh?” It was obvious and she felt silly for asking but she wanted to keep on chatting a little as she moved ahead in line. “I’ll save your place, you shouldn’t have to wait all over again just because you got a little captivated.” It was a pleasure to see someone so taken, romantic almost in the way the other seemed so lost in the sounds. “Is this your kind of music?”

“No, no. It’s totally okay.” Kali was quick to refute the other woman’s apology, head shaking. She was the one holding up the line and therefore the burden of an apology rest on her shoulders alone. “I need to get my head out of the clouds, as my mom would say. Am I allowed to blame the fact that it’s been... about seven hours since I’ve had anything to eat? Plus the sun? That’s plausible, right?” A light smile colored her features as her gaze glanced to the obviously perturbed people behind the woman. “You guys can go ahead of me, though. I’m still deciding.” Her smile grew, however, at the kindness of the stranger. “Yeah, you could say that.” She agreed with a soft chuckle. “That’s so sweet but you don’t have to do that. You break the rules of the line you have to suffer the consequences, right?” The small joke was accompanied by a quiet laugh, eyes glancing down before looking back to the woman with the bright eyes in front of her. “Any music is my kind of music, really. I love the way it makes you feel, you know?” She asked. “What about you? Do you like it?”

While Adalet had plans to float on the water and destress with lots of good music and alcohol later in the afternoon, she first made her way to the food boats for lunch, because the lobster rolls were always a must-have when it came to attending Floatopia. Waiting in line, though, wasn’t ever something she enjoyed about the event… but being an event planner herself, she knew that long lines meant that people were having a good time and if people were having a good time, money was being spent, and if money was being spent, that pretty much meant that the event would always keep coming back. The sun was nice and warm, beaming off of the bare skin that was exposed around her bikini top and shorts and as long as she got the lobster rolls she found herself practically drooling for, everything would be alright. At least, it would be, if the line wasn’t stuck behind one person who seemed lost in the musicians warming up on stage. Adalet reached forward, lightly tapping the woman on the shoulder before speaking. “Uh, sorry, but the line is… moving.” It was only after she pointed toward the line that had moved quite a bit in front of them that the woman turned around and Addie was hit with recognition. “Oh my god, Kali,” She spoke, her slight frown curving into a grin. “I didn’t even recognize you - but I guess that’s how it goes when you skip breakfast and coffee on a Saturday. How have you been? The music is really great, huh?”

Kali’s cheeks were flushed from embarrassment, the red merely blending in to her already sun warmed skin. She knew that the way music had a hold on her could be considered embarrassing, but the woman couldn’t help it. Any time an instrument played she needed to stop and listen- even if it meant she’d inadvertently become an inconvenience to those around her. “I’m so sorry.” She apologized once more, still feeling that tinge of embarrassment even though Addie was being so kind about her holding up the line. “It’s the overalls, isn’t it? I’m pretty sure I bought them at a thrift store back home years ago and this is the first time they’ve seen the light of day.” Shoulders visibly relaxing as their conversation went on, an easy smile found it’s way onto the brunette’s features. “I’ve been good, though. It’s crazy, this is my third Floatopia and every year it seems it gets bigger. And the music gets better.” Her smile grew at the mention of the musical acts. “How are you, though? You look great but we need to get you some food. You go ahead in front of me, I’m not even sure what I want yet. I’m leaning towards a lobster roll but I’m not sure yet...”

Ryder swore every year with these events they became much more monumental. Even during the first night it seemed like the craziness had started early. His own hues had watched a group of college kids make their own floating table with a keg. Obviously, they were taking turns with the keg stands. Moments like these the man was glad he had matured from those days. Older meant wiser, least that was how it should be. Now, he could only shake his head at those antics. Surely they would be all have massive headaches the next day. He definitely couldn’t miss that. “I didn’t mean to rush - with so many choices it’s easy to get lost in the indecisiveness of all the choices. Unless you’re repetitive. I’m guilty of that for sure.” Admittedly, Ryder had about 3 or 4 choices of meals that he liked to go through. Nonetheless though, he smiled gently at the other.

The man’s kindness brought a warm smile to Kali’s features, though her cheeks were still tinged light pink from embarrassment in getting lost in the music and holding up the line. “See I’m a bit of both.” She said with a soft chuckle. “I usually have a few staples that, if I see them on the menu I order them, but everything here sounds so good. Like the mini crab cakes with the red pepper aioli? I’ve never been a huge fan of crab cakes but someone walked by with them a few minutes ago and they smelled delicious. Though it could also be option three... like you should never go grocery shopping hungry maybe you get to a point where you’re so hungry that you can’t make a decision. What uh, what are you thinking of getting?”

One drawback the architect had found from her growing love and settle into island life, was that being essentially surrounded by the ocean meant much of the eateries contained some form of shellfish on the menu. While that of course didn’t mean she had hardly any options, Dilan simply needed to be a little more mindful of where exactly she decided to grab a bite as she perused passed some of the food boats. When an aroma of crab cakes and lobster rolls alone was enough to have her nose scrunch accompanied by a phantom throat tickle, before stopping at one that seemed to be the least in worry for cross-contamination. Finding her place in the queue and just behind Kali, canting her head to the side noticing the woman appeared kind of — spaced out. Had this been most other people, she might’ve already made a disgruntled remark, instead waving her hand accompanied by an  ❝ Earth to Kali, ❞ in effort to get her friends attention. ❝ You’re fine, no worries, haven’t concretely decided what I want either but barbecue chicken egg rolls might be calling my name. ❞ Glancing over towards the practicing band for a moment then. ❝ Wanna take the food to the music ? Judging from how entranced you were they’re worth front row seats. ❞

The movement was enough to pull Kali out of her somewhat transfixed state, a sheepish smile on her features as she looked over to Dilan as an apologetic smile colored her features. “Would it be inappropriate to blame the amount of sun I’ve gotten today on my little space flight there or should I just not bother with the act since we both know I have a one track mind as soon as any kind of music comes on.” Chuckling softly, her gaze shifted from the brunette in front of her to the food boat’s menu, lingering for a moment as she read over it once more before looking back to Dilan. “Oh, the barbecue chicken eggrolls sound good... but so does the New York strip bahn mi...” Trailing off, Kali paused before an idea came to her and a smile formed on her features once more. “Hey, what if we got both and split them? Then we get a little bit of each, what do you think?” As she awaited the other woman’s response, the music teacher waved the person in the line behind them on, allowing them to step in front of them and order as the women discussed. “I doubt the food will do well in water and knowing my luck I’d end up dropping everything in there but... once we’re done, absolutely. Get a few drinks and floating on up to the stage sounds fun.”

Franny wanted to make sure Selena ate now that she was back from her boat outing with her grandpas and at the moment, it seemed like the eight-year-old only had sugar. She was definitely hyper, but it could’ve been from the mood of the event. Franny remembered loving it when they came out as a kid as well, so she saw a lot of herself in the little girl running around. “Selena! You need to come settle and decide what you want to eat, Mija.” She said as she got in a line and heard someone apologize before saying she could go ahead of her. “Oh, it’s okay. I’m trying to settle down my daughter and I’m starting to think I should’ve left her with her grandpas.” She teased as the little girl ran over and finally stood by her mom. “Now stay and wait, okay? We’ll get some food in you and hopefully you’ll sleep hard tonight.” She laughed softly and held her daughter’s hand.

When Selena came running over to her mother, a warm smile graced Kalisa’s features at the near instant recognition. Even three years later she was still getting used to the familiarity everyone held on the small island- it’d been such a culture shock coming from LA where you’d never run into the same person twice, even if you were looking for them. “It is a grandparent’s job after all, isn’t it? Aren’t they supposed to hang onto them until they crash from their sugar high?” Chuckling softly, Kali’s gaze drifted between the child and her mother. “Hi Selena. What do you think you want to eat? I could use some help deciding.” She leaned over slightly as she spoke to the young girl, glancing up to Franny as she continued. “Everything looks so good. Or maybe I’m just that hungry. Have you eaten here before?”

WHO: @fireislandstarters​ WHERE: On the Docks by the Food Boats

Kali figured she’d be able to grab a bite to eat before the next band came on, exiting the water only to find her way to the food boats while sipping on a bottle of water. The introverted girl usually didn’t like crowds like this but in her short time on Fire Island she’d come to really appreciate the celebration- mainly for the music and the food. She’d finally chosen a line to get in and had been waiting for about ten minutes when the loud beat of a drum caught her attention and her gaze turned towards the stage. A new band was warming up and for a moment, Kalisa was lost in the sounds, small smile on her face until a voice from behind her caught her attention. “Oh.” She said softly, bashful smile coloring her features. “I’m so sorry, you can go ahead of me. I’m still trying to figure out what I want... the uh, music distracted me.”
