Holt tells him that such is the protocol for anyone experiencing a traumatizing work lapse and Detective Rosa Diaz had no qualms about taking a break from field work especially after being wrongfully imprisoned like Jake. Jake responds saying, "So what? Am I supposed to follow everything that Rosa does? What if Rosa jumps off a cliff?"

Amy was spiralling. She says that if she doesn't pass the sergeant exam, she won't be able to take it for another five years which means her entire life calendar will be disrupted and everything will fall apart so she won't be able to have the right time to get married, have kids, and her parents will never be proud of her and she will never be the youngest detective to become a sergeant in NYPD history ever again. Her life is ruined.

Scenario 1: Dogs come from the same family line as wolves. Dogs are dangerous and should stay in the wild.

Scenario 2: Zoe wished for an oven when she saw a shooting star last night. Zoe got an oven today. Shooting stars make wishes come true.

Scenario 3: Sam told Zoe that she shouldn’t be exercising every single day because it is bad for the health. Zoe responds with telling Sam that she, too also exercises everyday so it shouldn’t be bad.

The Development Think Piece: Guess That Fallacy!

Hi everyone! Welcome to another post by The Development Think Piece. Today’s blog post will certainly get your thinking gears going with a Guess That Fallacy Quiz!  I’ll be giving you five (5) scenarios I often witness and comment down below what kind of fallacy each scenario exhibits :)  Names used in the scenarios are fake. I will not be name dropping anyone ;)  Scenarios #1: Family members are gathered in the living room. Lou just came home.

Elsa: Ate, you shouldn’t go out for unnecessary things like eating outside and going to the mall. You’re at risk because of your age and your heart condition.  Aunt Lou: If anyone’s going to have COVID and bring it home, it’s going to be you because you go to the palengke all the time to buy supplies!  #2: A grandmother is diagnosed with mild dementia and recently started slapping herself. Her children are meeting to discuss what to do and how to take care of her.  Mary: She shouldn’t stay in our house anymore, before you know it, she will probably get a knife and try to kill one of us while we are sleeping! #3: A mother comes home frustrated with how messy the house is. She gathers her children and scolds them.  Mother: You don’t care about this house and our family! It’s either you do your chores, or you don’t care about this family at all! #4: A couple that fell in love in a place called Rooftop are having problems. Only recently, Rooftop closed down due to the pandemic. The girl messages her close friend.

Girl: I saw on Facebook that Rooftop closed down. Recently, Boy and I have been having problems in our relationship. I think Rooftop closing down is a sign.  #5: A group of friends is talking about their upcoming long test. While everyone was worried, Thanos was calm and cool.  Thanos: We don’t need to study, guys so just relax. I knew this guy who’s now a senior that took the same class. He didn’t study at all and still got an A.  Best of luck!

Guess That Fallacy

If she fails this quiz, she will receive an F in this class, then she’s going to have to repeat the entire semester and her graduation will be delayed.

As a very sensitive and emotional person, I cannot help but resonate with a LOT of advocacies, which makes my Facebook timeline and Instagram story filled with shared posts and shared stories of various advocacies I want my family and friends to see.

Gender and Development and Environmentalism are the two advocacies that I’ve always dreamt of pursuing for my development practice in the future. What makes this highly important for me is the interconnection between the two which can be seen in climate change disproportionately affecting women due to higher poverty rates, less access to human rights, and the systemic violence they are experiencing.

Even if these two advocacies sit very close to my heart, I think it’s highly important to also be passionate about other advocacies, especially when the need arises.

The transition to the new normal caused several sectors from our labor force to lose their only form of livelihood. Over the course of this quarantine, my highschool best friend and I established a COVID-19 response initiative called PARA! Kay Manong. It’s a fundraising campaign for the public transportation sector, specifically the tricycle and jeepney drivers who were badly affected by the suspension of public transportation. 

“The General Community Quarantine (GCQ) guidelines fail to regard their welfare. Furthermore, the lack of government-wide efforts to give aid to the ailing public transportation sector and the looming jeepney phase-out make the lives of our jeepney drivers more precarious than ever.”

We envisioned to relieve them of their worries on their next meal through the provision of relief packages containing rice, noodles, canned goods, hygiene products, and PPEs, and allow them to focus on their safety and good health amidst the ongoing threat of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Through this campaign, we somehow made this happen. However, we acknowledged that this is not a sustainable solution for them. Nearing the end of our campaign, the Office of the Vice President reached out to us asking for help in promoting BAYANIHANAPBUHAY, a free online job platform with more than 6,000 job openings for those whose source of livelihood was disrupted because of the pandemic. Hopefully, this can serve as a more sustainable solution for our modern day heroes.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m gonna end up being unfriended or unfollowed because of all the posts I’ve been sharing but it doesn’t really matter to me. Sharing various advocacies to my family and friends, in hopes of educating them, is something I plan on doing for a REALLY long time.

Insights on Development Communication

New Insights

Upon reading Terms and Definitions in Communication for Development and Social Change by Jan Servaes, Development Communication Primer by Nora Cruz Quebral, and Development Communication: Communication for or of Development by Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee, I ended up with various insights and critiques.

In Servaes’ reading, I was introduced to the concept of Development Communication and Communication for Development. Admittedly, I had troubles differentiating the two at first but upon reading the entire article, I was able to come up with a simple working definition that made things clearer for me, and hopefully for you too. Development communication is the process of communicating with a goal of development in mind, while communication for development is the social process that seeks common understanding. In other words, Development Communication is the act of disseminating development techniques and strategies through communicative mechanisms, while communication for development is a two-way communication system aiming for development that paves the way for dialogue and participation of both parties. 

My main takeaway from Quebral’s primer is that Development communication focuses on developing countries however it is hard to tap into rural areas because they still rely on media such as radio and newspapers. Understanding Amartya Sen's "Development for some may cause underdevelopment for many" will allow people in media to recognize the gap between the rich and the poor because mass media technologies are considered as “magic multipliers” of development. By doing so, we can hopefully create solutions that will be able to target both parties as communication is the vehicle that carries development onward, and we can't consider a country or a nation to be developed if some are left behind.

And lastly, for Chatterjee’s article, the concept of development communication was discussed in-depth on how it is used as a medium for behavior change for the masses. Disseminating information, listening to feedback, and responding appropriately is essential in having meaningful communication for Chatterjee. Development here is not just in the ideological sense, but tangible outputs which will lead to actual development in the future. Through this, consensus will be created to raise public understanding and generate dialogue among stakeholders. Stakeholders here are the government, civil society, and the media, who all have different goals and objectives for communication development. 

Common Themes Present

After reading all the three readings, I was able to relate Communication of Development to the concept of Participatory Development from one of our Development Studies major classes as it enlists both local knowledge and local participation. I also understood development as a highly contextualized concept because it is seen as a reflection of personal values, and the standard of development is dependent on the societal framework. Lastly, the importance of media in development communication was also discussed in all three readings. Servaes explained how the use of traditional and non-traditional media should not be seen in isolation from another. The blending of media is a way for a message to have a wider reach and for the mass to receive the benefits from both media. Quebral and Chatterjee discussed how the use of both media would be highly beneficial for educating people and propagating development ideas and strategies to the mass. Through this, I was able to understand the importance of recognizing the lack of development in some areas and their preferred media for communicating with other stakeholders. For example, Servaes and Quebral discussed traditional media such as radio and newspapers are more accessible for these people compared to non-traditional media such as digital, mobile, and social media.

Difficulties

The concept of information and communication technology considered to be more personal and affordable confuses me because how can it be if it only widens the gap between those who can afford the new/modernized mass media and those who cannot?

What I appreciate the most in people I respect and admire.

Being emphatic is one of the qualities I always look for whenever I meet someone new and it’s also the quality I appreciate the most in people I respect and admire.

Empathy is very important in any given situation because it allows people to understand the circumstances of others, which in turn dictates how people respond. I believe that having the ability to understand what others are going through makes a person more respectful and thoughtful of those around them.

Aside from being emphatic, I admire people who respect anyone and everyone. Respect, for me, is a two-way street. It doesn't matter whether you are older, or wiser, or you have more professional experiences than the person you are communicating with. What matters is how you treat a person no matter who they are and what their background is.

Why keep a journal?

Keeping a journal may seem to be tedious and uninteresting for some, but personally, I believe that regularly and religiously writing in a journal will help me develop mindfulness and overall growth.  Journal writing will be able to help me develop introspection and self-consciousness through daily reflections. Writing down thoughts, feelings, and happenings will allow me to look back and reflect on what I went through that day. Through journal writing, I will be able to track my progress and growth as an individual
