Begin Again | Kane & Lara
She tries to remember all the encounters theyâd had before this moment, all those times when she had so much to say but not enough courage to actually let him know. Itâs difficult, itâs a little bit painful to try and think about it all because she also remembers how much each encounter drained her. Lara hated not being able to talk to him as openly as she wanted to but it was better now. She only really said a few things but she just felt so much better all of a sudden. It scares her sometimes that Kane could still hold that much power over her emotions. Over the years, she had worked on controlling that better and being able to control her own emotions. A smile forms on his face, and she returns it happily and exhaling. Itâd been so long since sheâd last seen a real smile cross his face, one that was meant for her anyway. Heâs smiled and laughed before but with other people, with people that werenât Lara, and even though it was lovely seeing him enjoy life, there was a certain melancholy feeling that came with not being the reason for that happiness. At the sight of his smile, sheâs overcome with relief and a certain kind of pride. Itâs been a while since Laraâs pulled a smile from Kane and there was a time that she believed she no longer had the privilege of giving him such happiness. There was a time when she believed that she didnât deserve to see Kane happy anymore and that it was a sight only meant for those who didnât break his heart. Thereâs a seedling of hope inside her sometimes that thinks he never loved her enough for her to break his heart too much and that maybe, being friends would still be okay and she still deserved it. With how long it took to even speak a word to him, itâs obvious thatâs untrue. But thatâs behind them now and they can only move forward, Lara thinks that theyâve just taken a step in the right direction, together this time.
"Me too." She replies, fast like sheâs been holding her breath and waiting to say the answer. "Hang out again? I mean, yeah⊠Thatâd be great, Iâd love that." Laraâs not sure if she believes her ears, unable to believe that he suggested to go out again sometime and to hang out. She canât imagine doing this again, with him being more open and things being less tense. "With Steven and Rachel again? Or maybe other friends from high school?" Lara presses again, eyebrow quirked up because she can understand if thatâs what he meant. It would make more sense if he meant with another group of people where they werenât alone. Even though thatâs what she wants, almost desperately. Itâd be easier to be more open to him if they were alone and even though being with other people meant that she could use other people as a distraction, it was just less personal. "Me too, I meant what I said too." She nods, agreeing with him and sweeping a couple stray hairs out of her eyes before realizing she didnât want him to have a clear view of her and so she looks down again. Lara nods again and her eyes follow him as he moves throughout the area to clean up after Steven and Rachel. She meets eyes with Rachel once and they share a knowing look, Lara smiling a bit and thatâs all it takes for Rachel to know that somethingâs changed. He finishes up and sits back down again, noticeably closer to where she is and she doesnât know how to react. Was she supposed to acknowledge it or not? She doesnât quite know, doesnât even really know if sheâs supposed to have a reaction at all. "Actually, Iâve got it." Lara clears her throat, standing up so fast her vision goes spotty and moves to throw her trash away before going back and standing in front of everyone else. "Well, uhm, this has been fun, but," Lara takes out a phone and checks the time. Almost time for dinner. "We should be heading home. It was good hanging out with you, Kane." She shoots a smile in his direction before looking towards Steven and Rachel. Part of her wants to leave as fast as possible for fear that something may cause things to go south with Kane suddenly.
As Kane sat there in comforting silence, he couldn't help but think long and hard about everything that had happened between him and Lara since the breakup. All of it could mainly be summed up in one simple word: complicated. Their encounters had been a mix of troubling and refreshing. He couldn't say with complete confidence that each conversation they had was pleasant, but he also couldn't say that it was horrible. The one thing that he knew for sure is that every conversation and every time they hung out made him feel more hopeful than before. He honestly had hope that they were going to be able to get past everything and eventually become friends. Maybe moving on from their relationship wasn't about ignoring each other or being so bitter over it that the only way he felt like he could function properly was with a bottle of alcohol in his hand. Maybe it simply being able to talk things out without either of them getting up and running away. It almost seemed reachable, like it could happen right at that moment. The only problem was that he wasn't sure how Lara felt about it all. She seemed content with her life at college and he didn't know if bringing the past up would interfere with that. It was self-centered of him to think that anything he said could interfere with her life, but a part of him hoped that he could because it meant that he still mattered to her in some way. Lara's answer to his offer had a glimmer of something close to elation flash across his face. "Really? Wow, that's.. great.'' Kane felt the corners of his lips lift up into a smile, showing just how d her answer was made him feel. He silently thanked himself for having enough courage to tell her that he open to making plans for them to hang out again. Something so simple for him could mean a new beginning for the both of them.
Kane quietly pondered her question in his head before making an attempt to answer. If it was just the two of them they would have to talk more than they usually do and wasn't that what he wanted? He couldn't deny that he was frightened by the thought of asking Lara all the questions that he so desperately wanted answers to. Having other people around provided him with a distraction whenever it all started to feel like too much. If they weren't there then what would stop everything from completely collapsing like it did before? The thought scared him a bit and he had to take a second to remind himself that it was different now, and maybe they had learned. "I guess it would depend if they're tired with being dragged along,'' Kane began to answer, glancing at the two who were lost in their own worlds. "But if they don't want to tag along then we could always go to a park or diner together.'' He let his gaze rest on her for a few seconds before looking away and staring down at his hands intently, almost as if giving her some space. Kane didn't know if he would be able to be as brave as he had been that day, or if he would be able to get over the dull ache he still felt in his chest. "Oh, alright,'' he felt himself saying with disappointment in his tone. Rachel and Steven got up along with Lara, making him feel excluded as they stood around her. "I should probably get going too. Still haven't finished unpacking and all that.'' He stood up from his seat on the bench, Steven running over and wrapping his arms around him in a bruising hug. "I'll miss you, Kane. Don't go away for too long, okay?'' The small boy looked up at him with wide eyes, making an affectionate smile break across Kane's face. "I won't. I'll see you soon, bud. Be good for your sister.'' He gave the boy a final squeeze before fixing his gaze on the two girls behind him. "I'll see you guys soon too. Maybe I'll give you a text or a call?'' The words were mainly directed at Lara, but he waved at the both of them as he turned to leave. He was left with far too many questions and no answers. Now all he wanted to do was take a second to breathe.Â
